BACKGROUND

Taxonomy is a field of biology that is crucial for understanding the

diversity of life on earth. It not only encompasses the discovery,

description and classification of species but also plays a fundamental

role in conservation of biodiversity. Taxonomy is also an essential part

of studies related to forestry, horticulture, landscape development,

aesthetics and other fields relevant to mankind. Without taxonomy,

all other fields of biology will be deprived of their focus and aim.

Despite this, the number of trained taxonomists is declining and the

research priorities often shift away from taxonomy.

Therefore, the primary goal of this workshop is to enhance the

expertise of people in the field of plant taxonomy and inculcate the

knowledge of both classical as well as modern tools of taxonomy. This

workshop will help the participants acquire the necessary skills

required in the field of plant taxonomy and will also train them in

using a combination of techniques to study any taxa in detail. The

course will include training in basic techniques of plant identification,

herbarium making, nomenclature, classification, botanical

illustrations, floristics and revisionary studies, etc. as well as the

modern techniques of molecular taxonomy with an aim to develop

expertise among the post-graduate students, research scholars, and

teaching faculty working in the field of plant biology. The course will

also undertake field visits where participants will be exposed to

plants growing in natural habitats.

COURSE CONTENTS

Floristic diversity of India

Plant identification and Herbarium Techniques

Revisionary studies & Flora writing

Botanical Nomenclature

Role of different data sources in taxonomy

Taxonomic databases and literature

Field Visits: Local flora

ELIGIBILITY

The workshop is intended for teachers, research scholars and

post-graduate students. For close interaction between the

participants and the resource persons, the number of participants

will be restricted to 30.

BOTANICAL SURVEY OF INDIA

Botanical Survey of India (BSI) was established in 1890 with the

objective of exploring the plant resources of the country. BSI has been

engaged in undertaking intensive floristic surveys and collecting

accurate and detailed information on the occurrence, distribution,

ecology and economic utility of plants in the country; collecting,

identifying and distributing materials that may be of use to

educational and research institutions; and acting as the custodian of

authentic collections in well planned herbaria and documenting plant

resources in the form of local, district, state and national flora. BSI has

11 regional centres in different regions of India. Central National

Herbarium is the largest herbarium in India.
