CanSkate BIf he or she is able to skate forward, backward & stop.

CanSkate CIf he or she is 11 or older and not had formal lessons.

CanSkate is Skate Canada’s learn-to-skate program, designed for beginners of all ages. It focuses on fun, participation and basic skills development. Skaters earn badges as they learn fundamental skating skills. Lessons are given in a group format with low coach-to-student ratios (1:6 for Preschool and 1:8 for CanSkate). Every group lesson is structured as follows:

LEARN TO SKATE

15 minutes of warm-up activity (all skaters) 30 minutes of group instruction with a professional coach, and 5 minutes of wind-down activity

Skaters are encouraged to progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active by using various teaching techniques, music and a wide variety of activities that create a fun environment and promote learning. Our coaches will assess each skater’s ability at the beginning of the season and recommend the most appropriate skating group if your skater has not been in a CanSkate program before, or you are unsure of which class they should be registered in. As a general guide for initial class selection, enroll your skater in:

FUN FILLED THEME DAYSWhether you skate once a week or several times a week, theme days make the skating year A LOT of FUN!

Don special colours for some weeks, Crazy Hat and Hair Week always brings a few chuckles, and everyone’s ultimate favourite, PJ Week! It’s fun to see your coaches all dressed up too! Everyone gets into the spirit and there are photos to admire and take home.

Santa comes in December and the

Grinch is right behind him, so watch out!

Theme weeks are a source of fun and inspiration.

We look forward to seeing everyone’s creativity once again this year!

As of July 1, 2011 Skate Canada requires all CanSkate, CanPowerSkate and Adult CanSkate participants up to and including Stage 5 to wear a CSA approved hockey helmet while on the ice. USC will follow this mandate.

STARSKATE Skills, Tests, Achievement, Recognition – what STARSkate is all about!

Once a skater has completed the CanSkate program, they can move up to the STARSkate program which offers skaters an opportunity to develop their skills in four areas: STARSkaters are able to particpate in Skate Canada’s “Test Stream”. These skaters undertake prescribed tests during organized sessions called “Test Days”. At the same time, skaters may choose to enter competitions held at clubs in other locations to showcase their talents. Similar to CanSkate, the STARSkate program is progressive. Each level incorporates a combination of dances, skills, freeskate and/or interpretive elements.

TEEN & ADULTSKATE

CANPOWERSKATE

Teen & AdultSkate takes all of the elements of CanSkate and STARSkate and combines them in to a format appropriate for our adult skaters. It is a wonderful program for adults learning to skate and also those looking to improve upon existing skating skills.

Please notify your coach at least four weeks in advance if you can-not test on the scheduled day. A change fee may be levied to have a skating test moved to a different day, unless extenuating circumstances warranting such action are approved by the Test Chair, in consultation with your coach. If you are ill on test day, you must advise your coach ASAP and prior to the scheduled test time to avoid being charged the full test fees. You will be charged the full test fee if you miss your scheduled test.
