Onsite Workshops:

1. MCC and the Church: New Ways of Working TogetherMost of the ministry of MCC around the world is done in collaboration with the localchurch, often in direct partnership. This includes places like Colombia, Kenya, andeven here at home in B.C. Our churches are increasingly interested in having directinvolvement with the ministry they support. In response, MCC is developing new waysfor the church in North America to be directly involved with MCC ministry at home andoverseas. This workshop will examine new ways of engaging your church with theministry of MCC overseas.

2. If they don’t make it, we won’t succeed: Newcomers’ challenges in CanadaVarious studies have consistently shown that groups more likely to be affected bypoverty include lone parents, recent immigrants, people with disabilities, and seniors.The difficulties that immigrant parents face in getting good jobs have negativeintergenerational impacts on the educational and employment outcomes of theirchildren. Come hear how MCC is working to address child poverty in Surrey andVancouver.

3. Building safer communities through restorative justice: the work of CoSA(Circles of Support and Accountability) in the Lower MainlandCan Christians use restorative principles to make a difference in our society to helpoffenders and victims of sexual crimes? Through the support of MCC and CatholicCharities, CoSA (Circles of Support and Accountability) is finding that high-riskcriminals in Vancouver/Fraser Valley can change their lives and have “no more victims.”Hear about the restorative work of CoSA in the Lower Mainland.

4. Homelessness: How does MCC respond?Why are people homeless in the Fraser Valley? Who are our homeless neighbours? Are there solutions? What role does MCC play in response? Staff from MCC and partneragencies will provide answers to these questions and ask for you input and feedback.

Originally from Waterloo, Ontario, Bonnie’spast experience includes service as the MCCRepresentative in Colombia for almost 11years, and with an MCC partner organization,Justapaz, in the same country for five years.She is a graduate of Conrad Grebel Collegeand the University of Waterloo. Bonniecurrently lives in Bogotá with her husbandand 10-year-old son. She will be sharingstories of MCC work in Colombia.

The people of Colombia have faced decadesof violent conflict between diverse armedgroups vying for economic and politicalcontrol. Innocent families are caught in themiddle, many living in dangerous situationsas they struggle to meet their daily needs,while others have had to flee their homes.MCC projects in Colombia assist uprootedand vulnerable people with incomegeneration, food security, education, andpeace-building initiatives.
