11:00 am Welcome Recital Come hear the GFU flute ensemble, Dr. Emily Stanek, and Sophia Tegart perform solo and chamber works.
12:00 pm Practicing Workshop Group session: bring your flute! Learn how to practice from the Instructor of Flute at Corban University, Dr. Emily Stanek.
1:00 pm Flute Master Class Master class with the Assistant Professor of Flute at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Dr. Jonathan Borja.
3:45 pm Flute Choir Session Bring your flutes! Flute choir reading session. All levels are welcome! Alto flute and bass flutes available.

With performances described as “the highlight of the evening” (Kansas City Star), Jonathan Borja enjoys a varied career as a performer and educator. Jonathan was recently appointed to the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse as Assistant Professor of Music to teach flute and music history. Prior to this appointment, he served on the faculty of the Conservatory of Music and Dance of the University of Missouri-Kansas City and was a member of the Topeka Symphony Orchestra.
Jonathan Borja holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music in flute performance, a Master of Music in musicology from the Conservatory of Music and Dance, University of Missouri-Kansas City. Dr. Borja earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Principia College. Before coming to the United States, Jonathan studied at the National Conservatory of Music in his native Mexico City. His teachers and mentors include Marie Jureit-Beamish, Mary Posses, William Everett, and Andrew Granade.
Jonathan has performed throughout the United States and Mexico and has appeared in festivals devoted to the music of J.S. Bach, George Crumb, Gustav Mahler, Olivier Messiaen, and Elliott Carter. His continued advocacy for the music of our time has lead him to collaborate with some of today’s finest composers, including Chen Yi and Zhou Long, George Crumb, Yehudi Wyner, Narong Prangcharoen, and Chester Biscardi, among others.
Dr. Borja was winner of the St. Louis Artist Presentation Society Auditions, winner of the Concerto Competition at UMKC, and a prizewinner in the SAI competitions in St. Louis and Kansas City.

Dr. Sophia Tegart is a popular soloist and Yamaha Performing Artist. She has performed concertos with the Spokane Symphony, the Washington-Idaho Symphony, and the Kansas City Civic Orchestra. Dr. Tegart is principal flute of the Portland Festival Symphony, Chehalem Symphony, the IFC3 wind ensemble, and second/piccolo in the Tradewinds Wind Ensemble, Carl Fischer Publication’s premiere recording ensemble. Dr. Tegart has held orchestral positions in the Washington-Idaho Symphony, the Walla Walla Symphony, the Oregon Mozart Players, and most recently the Des Moines Metro Opera. She has been guest principal flutist in the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra and Kansas City Civic Opera, and has performed as substitute flutist with the Kansas City Symphony, Spokane Symphony, and the Northwest Bach Festival.
Dr. Tegart regularly presents recitals and clinics throughout the United States. She is currently President of the Greater Portland Flute Society. She has served on the faculties at the University of Idaho, Concordia University, Pacific University, and George Fox University where she currently teaches flute, music history, and world music. www.sophiategart.com 414 N.
