We are excited about your arrival on August 19! This packet describes registration, orientation
and the courses required during the Fall 2014 semester. In addition, a general class schedule, exam
schedule, and list of required textbooks are attached.
Incoming students will automatically be registered for their fall courses. Your personal course
schedule, indicating your exact class times based on your section assignment (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 or
C2) is now available. To view your schedule, you will need to access OnTrack with the username and
password provided to you in your acceptance letter. If you have lost your username and/or password,
please contact the Help Desk at 336-278-5200. Textbooks can be preordered from the Elon Campus
Shop through OnTrack

First-Year Course Descriptions
Fall 2014
Civil Procedure I, 3 credits (Professors Dunham and Fink) LAW 610
A basic procedure course which explores the techniques for attaining judicial enforcement of
substantive rights. Topics such as venue, pleadings, joinder of claims and parties, discovery, res
judicata, trial and appellate review will be covered. Federal and state jurisdiction will also be examined,
including the Constitutional aspects of such jurisdiction.
Contracts I, 2 credits (Professors Gabriel and Levine) LAW 620
A comprehensive study of the creation, transfer and termination of contract rights and duties.
Fundamental common law principles such as capacity to contract, mutual assent, consideration and
legality of subject matter will be addressed. Pertinent portions of the Uniform Commercial Code,
particularly Article 2 dealing with sales, will be covered.
Legal Construction and Analysis, 1 credit (Professor Barilla) LAW 665
This course establishes a foundation for understanding law and assists students in developing the
analytical skills necessary for success in law school and on the bar exam. In this course, students will
develop (i) their understanding of the foundations for the study of law; (ii) the ability to understand and
utilize court opinions; (iii) the ability to deconstruct, understand, and apply rules of law; (iv) the skills
involved in accurately identifying legal issues; (v) the ability to identify critical facts and evaluate them
appropriately and effectively in an examination setting; and (vi) the ability to effectively express ideas
and understanding regarding legal issues in a clear, well defined manner. Students will also develop an
understanding of the skills necessary to flourish in law school, on the bar exam, and in practice. This is a
one unit, graded course. It will meet for eight weeks.
Legal Method and Communication I, 3 credits LAW668
(Professors Wasson, Noble, Perkins, Connors)
This course introduces students to the essential skills of legal analysis and legal research, and to the
unique requirements of written and oral communication in the legal profession. Topics include reading
legal authorities, understanding the structure of legal rules, rule-based reasoning, case synthesis, factual
analysis, and common law and statutory analysis. Students write a number of assignments of increasing
complexity on which they receive comprehensive individualized feedback. Students also learn to
conduct legal research using both print and electronic research resources, how to develop a research
strategy and choose among available research tools, and how to cite legal authorities.
Legal Research (Dean McLeod, Librarians Watson, Hirsch and Pal) LAW659
This is the research component of the Legal Method and Communication I class; it is taught by the law
librarians.
Property I, 3 credits (Professors Friedland and Parrish) LAW 640
A study of property rights and interests in personal property and real property. Topics covered include
the acquisition of rights in property, possessory and non-possessory interests, estates in land, concurrent ownership, landlord-tenant relations and land-use regulation.

Torts I, 3 credits (Professors Grant and Armijo) LAW 650
A study of the legal rules which determine whether non-contractual civil liability arises from conduct
resulting in harm to others. Topics covered include intentional wrongs and negligence, as well as
defenses commonly asserted in tort actions.

Civil Procedure II, 3 credits (Professors Dunham and Fink) LAW611
Civil Procedure II is a continuation of Civil Procedure I.
Contracts II, 3 credits (Professors Gabriel and Levine) LAW621
A continuation of the study of the creation, transfer, and termination of contract rights and duties.
Fundamental principles relating to performance, enforceability, contract defenses, and remedies will be
addressed.
Criminal Law, 3 credits (Professors Exum and Rich)
LAW630
A study of substantive criminal law, including an examination of crimes and their elements. Specific
common law and statutory crimes will be covered. Available defenses will also be explored.
Legal Method & Communication II, 2 credits (Professors Wasson, Noble,
Perkins, Flynn, and Connors) LAW669
A continuation of Legal Method & Communication I, this course introduces students to advanced analytical
and writing skills such as persuasive writing techniques, classical rhetorical devices, types of legal argument,
and various forms of legal drafting. Students consider the effect that lawyers’ ethical responsibilities have on
their written assignments. Students also practice and deliver at least one oral research report or in-class
presentation, and at least one formal oral argument on a motion or appeal. As in the first semester course,
students receive comprehensive feedback on a number of increasingly complex written assignments.

Torts II is a continuation of Torts I and its consideration of the legal rules which determine whether non-
