“Abby has grown up at the Conservatory... she can find the beat in most songs and is steady as a metronome in keeping that beat. Second, she is pitch perfect when she sings along with songs or music. Finally, and probably most importantly, she loves music which has given her the nutrients for

developing her body, mind and emotions, as well as increased her fluency in reading.

Abby’s studies at the Conservatory have

provided her and her parents with uniformly positive social interactions with instructors, peers and parents who share similar child-rearing values, and some of these contacts have blossomed into meaningful friendships.”

MUSIC EXPLORATIONS EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC

For 12 weeks children will explore instruments and singing with their peers and families, while: • Learning basic musical concepts • Singing fun and age-appropriate songs • Developing listening skills • Experiencing percussion instruments hands-on • Combining movement and dance with music

FOR CHILDREN & PARENTSYour child will meet developmental milestones, and gain large and ne motor skills, sequencing ability, sharing, concentrating, and an appreciation for music. Each age-appropriate, sequential curriculum introduces and reinforces musical skills and concepts like high/low, soft/loud, keeping a steady beat, and singing on pitch. A parent or caregiver participates with their child in class.

• Babies (4-11 months & caregiver)• Toddlers (1-year olds & caregiver)• Tots (2-year olds & caregiver)• Kids (3-4 ½ years & caregiver)• Families (4 months-5 years & caregiver)*

EARLY CHILDHOOD FACULTY • Julio Pabon • Elise Pennington • Joshua Tice • Nathan Wesselowski

*Multi-age classes are ideal for sibling groups,

as well as individual children.

STORIES AND SONGS (4-5 YEARS)Children’s imaginations will soar as they read and re-create storybook tales through drama, music and dance. Children learn beginning concepts of music, and explore pitch, volume and space through group and individual singing. They develop creativity as storytellers and build important skills in literacy, sequencing, and cooperation--and lay the foundations for a lifetime of music and reading.

ORFF ENSEMBLE (GRADES K5-2)This unique teaching methodology uses musical stories, expressive movement and games to introduce children to rhythm, melodic phrases and improvisation. Percussive instruments (including xylophones and wooden mallets) are combined with singing to nurture musical literacy and prepare the foundations for future study.

WINTER JAMBOREE | JANUARY 2014This thematic 4-week class is designed for continuing and new students alike, bringing to life a musical story through developmentally appropriate activities for each age group. This year your child explores Peter and the Wolf through movement, art and storytelling while learning musical concepts, rhythm and listening skills. • Toddlers & Tots (1-2-years) • Kids (3-4 ½ years) • Families (4 months-5 years)*

“My daughter loves the

diverse activities in class... and we end up singing the songs together all week long.”

“It’s a wonderful program, and I can see the growth in my child.”

The Conservatory offers EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC classes in a developmentally appropriate, supportive and

enjoyable environment, with many classes featuring opportunities for children and parents to learn together.

SUZUKI STRING LESSONS

Private lessons are an essential component of the the Suzuki program, complementing participation in group lessons. Lessons are available in packages of 30-, 45-, or 60-minute duration. Active parental participation with the child’s lessons, classes and daily practice is an important part of the Suzuki philosophy.

THE SUZUKI FACULTY

The Conservatory’s Suzuki teachers emphasize the importance of a nurturing learning environment, the necessity of listening music, the vital role of the parent in encouraging consistent practice, and the belief that learning music can contribute to the growth of a beautiful heart. The faculty are also talented performers specializing in cello, guitar, viola and violin.

• Julie Bamberger Roubik (viola/violin) • Jason Behr (guitar)• Chloe Helene Groth (violin)• Erin Dupree Jakubowski (violin)• Tatiana Migliaccio (violin/viola)• Kristian Ring (cello)• Elizabeth Teal (violin/viola)

Suzuki study can begin at age 4 or later (3-year olds accepted at instructor’s discretion). Students progress through the curriculum sequentially, regardless of their grade level at entry. The Suzuki method requires both group and individual instruction.

“Music is more than my passion, it is my life.”

The Suzuki program for violin, viola, cello and guitar combines specialized, individual instruction with group

classes where students learn from and with their peers. The Suzuki Method is based on the philosophy that

“talent education” can be as natural as an infant learning its native tongue.

SUZUKI

THE HOLY FAMILY STRINGS STORY

The Conservatory collaborates with Holy Family Parish School in Whitefish Bay on a Suzuki-style program. Students receive weekly in-school individual instruction with group lessons.

Students enjoy one-on-one attention while focusing on string technique and learning the art of playing together in a fun atmosphere. As they master the music, these students are also developing focus and the rewards of disciplined practice.

Dear Conservatory,

Neither my husband nor I took any type of music lessons growing up, so we didn’t know what to expect when our son asked if he could take violin lessons in 1st grade...

We have been very happy with the progress our son has made and would recommend the Suzuki Strings program to any family whose child shows interest in music. You will not be disappointed.

MUSIC THERAPY & WELLNESS

MUSIC AND THE SHARPER MIND

The Conservatory’s “Mature Musicians” and “Singing Seniors” programs aim to improve socialization and cognitive function while decreasing depression rates among retirement home residents.

For almost ten years, dozens of band and choir members at the Alexian Village Senior Center rehearse

weekly, producing two annual performances enjoyed by

hundreds of friends and family.

While they enjoy rehearsing together, these seniors are also exercising their brains to build stronger cognitive pathways. Studies of the program have found a direct connection between active music making and keeping their brains sharp.

MUSIC THERAPY

Music therapy uses music, in all its forms –creating, singing, moving, and/or listening – within a therapeutic relationship to achieve many non-musical goals and to address the physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs of individuals. The Conservatory’s board-certied music therapists design customized music therapy interventions to meet the needs of each client and improve quality of life.

Music therapy strengthens clients’ abilities and extends them to other areas of life. It can also provide avenues for communication to those who nd it difcult to express themselves in words. Research by the American Music Therapy Association shows its effectiveness in areas such as: overall physical rehabilitation and facilitating movement, increasing motivation and engagement, facilitating emotional support and expression. No musical aptitude or training is needed to benet from music therapy.

Music Therapy Classes

• Preschool Language Development • Communication Development in Children • Social Skills Development• Teens with Developmental Disabilities

FACULTY

Professionalism and a personal touch is assured by the Conservatory’s ten board-certied faculty members who are specialized in Geriatrics, Alzheimer’s, physical and developmental disabilities, mental illnesses, neurology, oncology/cancer counseling, pediatrics, and early childhood.

“You have no idea how much this is helping our daughter!”

WELLNESS THROUGH MUSIC

Music is not just for kids. Learning and actively experiencing music can improve brain function, impede loss of cognitive function, and strengthen social involvement. An aid in stress reduction, music participation serves as a natural drug that can change perceptions, lift your feelings, and improve quality of life at any age.
