Having lately examined the roads of Shrivenham Parish I find that instead of being Execrably bad, they are become very good even for a carriage As I know therefore that the parish owes this great & most usefull improvement to the judicious management & steady perseverance of the present Vicar (the Rev. Mr. Barfoot COTTON) I think it right that posterity should be thus inform'd how much his parishoners & the neighbourhood are indebted to him

Taken from the Baptisms Register 1782 - 1801

1782 John FORD the present Clerk aged 62 has informed the present Vicar that the ancient Tomb stone on the East side of the Church is called that of the old Friar. The Iron sconce over the Clerk's Pew was formerly used (as 'tis said) to put the Hour glass in to regulate the length of the Sermon The Inclosure of Highworth Field in this neighbourhood took place 1775 that of Warnborough in the same Year The Inclosure of Ashbury 1772 that of Faringdon 1771 that of Uffington & Woolston 1775 The Chapel of Sennington in this neighbourhood was completely repaired and beautified chiefly at the expense of the Revd. Dr. WARNIFORD The Road from Shrivenham to Faringdon was entirely new formed and completed at the sole expense of William Lord BARRINGTON 1780 The Road from Ashbury towards Shrivenham was completely mended thro'out that Tithing under the direction of Bartlett Wilson BUTCHER who became Surveyor of the Highways at the desire of the Parishoners That distinguished Judge of Ancient Architecture Sanderson MILLER Esq. of Edge Hill in Warwickshie was of the opinion that the Church at Uffington was built in the Reign of Henry the second, that of Shellingford in the Reign of Edward the third, that of Standford in the Reign of Edward the fourth The Parish Church of Shrivenham is supposed to have been built in the Reign of James the first, the Porch was added in the Reign of Charles the first. It is dedicated to St. Mary Magdalen & was built at the expense of Sir Henry MARTIN, who likewise founded a charity for eight poor people of the parish The inclosure in Shrivenham Parish took place either in 1653 or 1655 1781 The pond in the vicarage close was thoroughly cleaned in 1781 The new & large mansion house of Loveden LOVEDEN Esqr. was completely covered in within the space of 8 months & in the year 1781. It is situated in Buscot parish. The new & elegant mansion house of Sr. Robt THROCKMORTON Bart. at Buckland was completed in ---- That ancient Piece of Antiquity (in the neighbourhood) the White Horse, was cleaned for many years by William Lord BARRINGTON but the Ground on which the Horse is cut being allotted by the Commissioners for the Uffington Inclosure 1775 to William Lord CRAVEN, His Lordship has since that time cleas'd it annually at His expense and has twice celebrated the scouring of the Horse with every country diversion viz. Horse racing, Ass racing, men running in sacks, men running down the steep part of the Hill for a Cheese, boys dipping in a Tub of Meal for a Bullett etc etc etc at both which sports there were computed to be upwards of 30,000 spectators His Lordship gave a most elegant cold collation in a large booth to all the Gentlemen of the Neighbourhood who were present and likewise strong beer to the common People 1782 In the year 1782 the Revd. Mr. B. COTTON added two bow windows to the parlairs of the Vic. House and also enlarged the kitchen The Hay Harvest in the year 1782 was attended with an unusual degree of Rain, the Hay consequently very much damaged. The Wheat Harvest in the same Year tho' late was well housed and proved much better than was expected.

The T.B. over the staircase of ye Vicarage House are the initial letters of the then Vicar Thomas BUNCE viz. in 1661. C.C. which follows with the date of 1736 are the initial letters of Mr. C. COTTON who in that year repair'd the house. He also wainscoted the E. parlour & made several improvements both in the house & garden to the value of £300. He likewise made a commodious wine vault. The Revd. Wm POUND M.A. became curate of the Vicarage 1st April 1640. He was afterwards Vicar but the year does not appear. T. BUNCE succeded in 1661. Richd VAUGHAN B.Ll. became Vicar in 1683. The Rev. George STEVENS signs the Register as Vicar on 15 April 1697. In that year therefore he probably became Vicar. In 1733 the Revd. Mr. Caleb COTTON succeded Mr. STEPENS & in 1765 the Rev. Mr. B. COTTON was first Vicar, some of the old parishioners informed him that there was a tradition with regards to the Friar's tomb on the E. side of the Churchyard being visited by pilgrims.

Autograph C. COTTON aged 84 Sep 18 1785 An oak tree which was planted 69 years ago & which grows on the W side of the Beckett Wilderness near the hedge which separates the Wilderness from Barnacles now measures 7 feet & ½ in girth at 5 feet & ½ from the ground. The tree also is believed to be 34 feet in height. This proves that in a sandy loam at least oaks thrive more than any other tree as there are other trees of many different kinds which were planted at the same time but none of them are equal in size to this oak. It appears by some painted glass that the house at Shrivenham Gate Mr. EYLOES was built in the year 1704 In 1786 notice was given in writing at the Church door that application would be made to Parliament for alloting the Common Fields of Bourton & Watchfield The winters of 1784 & 1785 were so severe that most of the more tender evergreens suffer'd very much. Hay sold at 5Gs. per ton. 1786 was a year of very great & general plenty. In 1786 a pheasant lay'd three eggs in a partridge's nest near Mr. LOVEDEN's of Buscot Park. The partridge hatch'd the young pheasants & rear'd them together with her own brood. In 1787 there began to be a sprinkling of pheasants in the neighbourhood. There hath also been great plenty of partridges for the last two years which perhaps May be attributed to the late act which requires certificates from those who kill game. N.B. This proposal originated with the present Vicar of this Parish D.B. 1788 The Months of April and May in the year 1788 were unusually dry and which dry weather continued till the 18th of June which occasioned a great scarcity of Grass the Meadow land was every where burnt up but the Rains which continued for three weeks from the 18th of June produced a great Quantity of after growth which was everywhere made into Hay. The Harvest this Year was very forward and very abounding in all sorts of grain and the fruits of all sorts particularly apples were very fine in great plenty - it was also a great year for moths & nuts oneacorn from a Tree on the East side of the Close weighed a Quarter of an Ounce and one drachen? This Year the Chapel at Watchfield was taken down by the order of the Bishop and consent of the Lord Chancellor the Patron of the Living, the Chapel was reported by six Commissioners to be of no very particular service to the Parishoners of Watchfield on account of the Vicinity of the Mother Church. On taking down the Chapel the Timbers were found in so very ruinous and decayed Condition that it was

the surprise of workmen it had not fallen down it was certainly very ancient the Arches being the round Saxon Arches. 1788 In the Year all the roads in this Parish the most private as well as public were every where made good Decbr. 19th 1788 The Revd. Barfoot COTTON A.M.Vicar of this Parish was elected and admitted a Canon Residentiary in the Cathedral Church of Salisbury. He owed this Preferment entirely to the Hon.ble and Right Revd. SHUTE Lord Bishop of the Diocese In the Year 1787 Lord BARRINGTON as Lord of the Manor planted two Clumps in Longcote Common consisting of Trees not more than 18 inches high surrounded by a foot wall B.C. 1787 An Act of Parliament was granted this Year four Inclosing the Common fields of Bourton & Watchfield. 1789 This Year all the roads in this Parish in general were formed and most of them well repaired 1788 This Year Mr. PYE member for this County sold his Faringdon Estate to Mr. HOLTOTT 1789 This Year Liet. Gen. GOBBIT by leave of the Bishop of the Diocese took down a part of the Church of Sparsholt and repaired the whole at His own expense to the amount of near £500. He likewise built a wall round the Church yard. The following extract with regard to the White Horse was copied from the Mss given by G.2d to the British Museum. 14 C de Mirabilibus Anglia Albus Egnus aim pullo vero, being the title "Miram est quad in figura Equi vic fuit, quod cum totus locus ubi est illa imago nimis herbosus fuirit, superequifirma nunquam herba creseat & sepia inta, ad modum equi denuda sit" The antiquity of this Mss cannot be settled from any other circumstances but the entry being in Latin, which seems to prove that it is at least 300 years old & perhaps far more ancient. It seems clear also that at this period, there was a general notion of a foal being cut out, or at least denudated, as well as the sire or rather dam. [In 1789 a milk white partridge was shot by Ld. BARRINGTON'S game keeper. Shrivenham Parish was inclos'd in 1653] The small island of Elephanta just E of the harbour of Bombay, receives its name from the rude figure of an elephant cut in stone Oct 12 1789 This day the different Weights of all the shopkeepers in this Parish were examined and compared with a Standard weight and to the credit of the shopkeepers were all found Just & Honest. B.C. This Year 1790 The New Dial at Beckett was set up with every possible attention to its accuracy so that it is hoped the Parish Clock will be set by it once a Week, Perhaps on Saturday. Five Dottrel were seen in Watchfield Field at the latter End of August 1790 one of

which was Shot. Peaches & Nectarines were ripe at the same time.

"That I had I gave" "That I gave that I have" Epitaph in Old Paul's Stowe. A proper Epitaph for any Benefactor to the Parish Mr. GODDARD sets his quarry at Swindon for 1s 4½ per square lug which are afterward to be fill'd up. There are nearly ten acres already quarried There is a White Cross near Aylesbury in the parish of Monk Risborough which is scoured but not regularly There is also a white Giant in the parish of Cerney Dorsetshire & a Red horse in Warwickshire The following epitaph is on a handsome tombstone in Stratton Church-yard, to the Memory of Hannah HYDE whose maiden name was MUNDAY & was born in the adjoining parish of Marston She liv'da Christian from her birth. Near seventy years upon the earth. Full fifty years did in this church. Sing forth Gods praise in faith & work. Her voice by nature was so wrought To shake on D., a 4th bove Alt She'd strike three octaves perfect clean Now gone to sing with Christ in air She died March 1787 I find that this epitaph was written by her son Gabriel HYDE who is now an inhabitant of Bishopston & himself very musical. From a long conversation with this man I am convinced that this amazing extent of voice was literally true, except that her shake was rather upon D in Alt than G as seems to be the more obvious scuse of the like & consequently she had only 26 notes, instead of 28. The lowest note being C not G. None of these 26 notes were falsets or feigned, but she could sustain any of them & be heard to a very great distance. D.B. October 20th 1789. 1791 The first wheat reaped this Year in this neighbourhood was Tuesday the ninth of August in Watchfield Memoranda - from the book containing the account of ye Church Wardens of Longcote since the Year 1721. In 1721 a Tower of the old Church fell down, and the Estimate for rebuilding it being £226 was raised by a Tax of 30 shillings on the Yard lands of Longcote & Fernham. The Contractor for this was –--- STRONG of Standford who not only finished the Tower for this Sum but added the flower Pots. He was a reputable Mason and built Wadley House for Mr. Charles PYE. In this Tower were 4 bells which being melted down, two were added by RUDDALL of Gloucester the principal Bell costing £40 After the hard frost of 1740 there were some very dry Seasons, there being great want of Water at Longcote for the Cattle, a carpenter whose name was HIGGS ---- the boring thro' the rock at more than 30 feet deep the instant the rock was perforated the water rose so rapidly as to oblige HIGGS to use the gratest Expectition to get out of the well since when Experience all the Wells at Longcote have been well supplied.

The House at Shrivenham the Property of late Mr. EYLOE and which was devised by Him together with His Estate at Shrivenham to the Vicar of Shrivenham but which was rendered void by the Statute of Mortimain was built in 1704 1790 This Year the Winter was so mild that the Ice House at Beckett was perhaps the only one filled in the country – Corn being sold at ----- it was agreed that many of the Parishioners could not subsist themselves & family by their labour. It was necessary therefore that their Wages should be rais'd, or Corn bought by the more Substantial Inhabitants, and sold to the Poor below Market Price. The latter was preferred & Lord BARRINGTON contributed half of what was necessary for that purpose. This Year John POPE of Bishopstone Parish who was one of the Surveyors mended the roads in a better Manner, than they had been & discovered some white gravel in Bishopstone Common. 1790 The Parish of Highworth built a commodious Work House. A Turnpike from Cht. Malford to Wotton Basset & Swindon was proposed & £1050 offered to be lent upon the lotts, at the first Meeting. N.B. It is in Contemplation to carry it on to Lechlade & Burford. The tunnel between Cirencester & Stroud, having baked it is feared the damage will not be Repaired till the ensuing Year, Whilst the tunnel answered, at Highworth. Coals are 5 a Ton cheaper than they used to be. The Chancel Seats & those in the Body of the Church were Oiled, which will not only make them look better, but will contribute to their Duration being now in a state of decay. N.B. The Church is said to have been built chiefly at the expence of Sr. Henry MARTIN, who was Lord of the Manor in James & Ch 1st time. It is reported to have cost £4,000 Sr. Henry also built the adjoining Almshouses & endowed them. He was Judge of the Prerogative Court.

Found in the Burial Register 1782 - 1812 1789 The following lines are copied from a collection by Sr. J. HARRINGTON who liv'd in the time of James the 1st speaking of rabbits "Told they were white & young & fat & sweet. New kill'd & newly come from Alborn chase at this time the price for them was only 2-" Epigram of the same on an inclosure taking place Said Sr. provide you posts & without failing your Neighbours round about with find your railing In 1401 when William of Worcester wrote his Itinerary Kingston Inn was call'd Kingston Shene & Cricklade Chelysworth Every one hath a goose in Germany on St. Martin's day & in Italy on All Saints Dr. HIGHMORE in the Phil. Transactions No. 56 gives an account of a medicinal spring at Farringdon Lady Ann CLIFFORD afterward Countess of Pembroke, liv'd much at Ramsbery & there is a sort of tradition that Sr. Ph. SIDNEY wrote his Arcadia there Dr. Jonathan SWIFT was twice at Letcomb & the last time in 1714 he complains in his letters of dining there between 12 & 1 & that his landlord (Mr. GRAY) having no wine, he was obliged to send for it There is a hospital at Lamborn founded in 1502 by John ISBURY Esqr. for 10 poor men – 6 to be nominated by New College & 4 by the family of the Hippisleys I received the following particulars from the late Mr. Saunders MILLAR of Radway in Warwickshire with regard to the antiquity of some of the churches in the Neighbourhood, of which perhaps no one could form a better judgement That at Stanford, about the time of Edward the 3d except the two porches which are older. There is a brass figure on a tomb there dated 1390 Shellingford in the time of the 4 first Norman Kings and Uffington in that of Hen. 2 D.B. October 1 1789 There are marks of Canon balls on the outside of Highworth Church & some have lately been found at Farringdon, both places having being beseiged in the Civil War, during which the old House was burnt by the King's troops at Beckett, which stood where the flower garden now is & nothing remained but the stables, which were handsome, and are now converted into apartments The following account is copied from a Mss insertion in Hartlib's Legacy of Husbandire I do remember I have heard my Grandfather say, who died in 1670 aged 84, that when he was a boy there was no such thing as turneps, cabbages, carrots except in some particular gardens & that very rare & that the first who sow'd carrots about Studly in Wiltshire (which is now famous for them) was one HIGGINS between 1625 & 1630 The remarker however observes that by 1708 they were diffus'dall over the Kingdom D.B. 1790 The present Church at Shrivenham is suppos'd to have been built in the time of James the 1st & probably finish'd in the beginning of Charles the 1st as C.R. is on the porch The tower of the ancient Church remains as it was & the plan was given accordingly, which accounts for there being no account of its consecration in the archives of the Diocese By tradition it cost no less a sum than £4,000 & was rebuilt at the expence of Sr. Henry MARTEN to whom the Beckett estate then belonged & who besides had probably rais'd a large fortune as an Advocate in D.rs Commons being according to the usualpromotion in that line, afterwards appointed Judge of the Prerogative Court It is believed that no parochial Church (at least situated in a village) is superior to it in architecture, or the accommodation of the parishioner, but there is not the most distant tradition with regard to the person who gave the plan - It is not however - probable, that the Architect May have been Inigo JONES, who built the Banqueting House at Beckett about this time, as also L. Radnor's at Coleshill & part of Lord Suffolk's at Charlton, Mr. FREAK's at Hannington & Lord Craven's at Ashdown Park May possibly have been likewise builtfrom plans of Inigo as an Architect of celebrity after having been employ'd by one Gentleman is often applied to by his neighbours In the year 1782 The Chancel of the Parish Church of Shrivenham was thoroughly repaired at the expense of the Right Hon.ble Lord Radnor Impropriator of the Great Tithes in the same Year the Body of the Church was likewise repaired by the Churchwarden John BADCOCK in the year 1782 The Hon.ble & Right Reverend Shute Lord Bishop of Landaff was translated from the Diocese of Landaff to the See of Sarum in 1782 In the Year 1783 the New Inclosure at Standford took place In the Year 1784 the Bridge at Coleshill was widened four feet What May be the use of the small door on the North side in Watchfield Chappel? in N. Holland such doors are used for the introduction of a Coche(?) On Feb.y 15 1785 died aged 85 the Revd. Mr. Caleb COTTON who had been vicar of Shrivenham 31 years when he resigned in favour of his son Mr. B. COTTON in 1764 After this he serv'd the curacy of Bishopston till his death. In both situations he attended most strictly to the duties of his stationnotwithstanding that in the latter part of his life he was much afflicted with the gout the pains of which he bore not only with resignation but chearfullness. In consequence of this most exemplary life, it Maybe truly said that no minister was ever more regarded & respected by his parishioners D.B. On the N wall of that house at Shrivenham which was formerly the Kings Arms there is a date of 1579 In 1786 it is said that Lord Craven hath given an acre of ground at Ashbury for the benefit of the Free School In the old Mansion House of the same village lately belonging to the WHITEs, in the parlour adjoining to the kitchen there are the Arms of England & a Portcullis on another pane from which as well as some of the ornaments it seems probable that the house was built either in the time of Hen. 7 or Hen. 8 In the Year 1786 the Revd. Dr. Onslow Archdeacon of Berks made a Parochial Visitation thro the whole County, in consequence of which several Churches and Parsonage Houses were repaired andmany of ye Churches and Towers white

The Archdeacon left orders with the Churchwardens to put up Tables of Benefaction with any other particualrs relating immediately to the Church in Consequence of which a very handsome Table of the names of the Benefactors and likewise aTable of Affinity and consanguinity were placed in this Church. The Archdeacon was pleased to express the highest satisfaction on finding the Church & Parsonage House of Shrivenham in suchperfect Order.
