Professional Engineers: All courses are approved under the direction of the New York State Department of Education for the listed number of contact hours toward renewal of P. E. license.

Since 2001, Dr. States has been very involved in security and emergency preparedness for drinking water and wastewater utilities. At PWSA, he conducted research on rapid analytical methods for drinking water contamination events, as well as on early warning monitoring systems for water quality. Course Description: This seminar reviews the basic operating principles of hydraulically operated, diaphragm actuated control valves. Examples are given for applications requiring on/off and modulating control and how to determine which valve will best meet a particular system’s requirements. Includes a discussion of technical issues related to altitude valves, including operational theory, proper sizing, installation, operation, maintenance and trouble shooting. Hands-on stations allow students to review preventative maintenance, visual illustration of how altitude valves and pressure reducing valves operate, preventive and corrective maintenance, and component identification for both valves.

Course Description: The course is designed to improve understanding of basic laboratory skills used in water treatment plants. General information on laboratory safety, practices and testing protocols, including sampling guidelines, is presented. Analytical techniques covered include temperature, pH, alkalinity, hardness, colorimetry (for chlorine and fluoride testing), turbidity and coagulation/flocculation (including jar testing). Course objectives will be met by presenting background/theory, incorporating practical applications of analytical testing and thorough hands- on experience, using portable field use and laboratory instruments. Participants are required to analyze water samples of known and unknown values.

Course Description: This presentation will describe the differences regarding all types of concrete water storage tanks. This will range from cast-in-place concrete, post-tensioned concrete, and wire-wound pre-stressed concrete. The presentation will also discuss common water quality issues that may occur in water storage tanks and methods for addressing them through retrofitting the existing tank. These issues can occur in tanks of any type, configuration and of any material of construction.
