For over a century credit unions have helped define the financial industry. With a vision in mind, together we will reach even greater levels of success!

Credit union leaders have long understood the significance of innovation and diversity. Since the creation of the first Canadian credit union, there was an understanding that true success meant the transformation of an industry. Now, more than ever, we need to dig deep into those roots, as we transform ourselves to meet the needs of our members in a changing world. We need to continue to push the boundaries, to collaborate, to innovate and to be the difference Canadians need us to be.

Taking place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, this year’s National Conference for Canada’s Credit Unions will bring together credit union leaders from across the country to learn, share, set goals, and map out a new course direction. We cannot predict the future, but we can definitely create it.

This year’s Conference has many new and exciting features including; the Canadian Credit Union Association Volunteer Challenge, integration of the MACU Marketing Program, a Filene Innovation Session Series, and the Regulatory Compliance Forum, to name a few.

Join us this May as we Chart the Course for success, for Canada’s credit union industry.

MONDAY AFTERNOON KEYNOTECANADA’S ECONOMIC LANDSCAPE AND OUTLOOK

Credit unions and their members are living through a protracted and significant economic adjustment, caused and characterized by lower prices for oil and other commodities, a lower dollar, continued low interest rates, a shrinking resource sector, and declining commercial investment. On the other side are signs of stronger global growth, and closer to home, federal and provincial governments that are anxiously eyeing opportunities for stimulus and diversification. Join this important examination of current economic trends, complete with insights and implications for credit unions.

Speaker Profile: Mr. Cléroux has more than 25 years of experience as an economist, mainly in the public sector. Before joining the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), he worked for the government of Saudi Arabia as Vice President, Business Analysis in the National Industry Clusters Development Program. His role was to create program strategies, define sector policies and conduct financial and economic analyses of industrial projects.

Prior to that, Mr. Cléroux was the Quebec Assistant Deputy Minister for Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade, responsible for the implementation of economic policies and programs to support small and medium-sized businesses and encourage entrepreneurship.

MONDAY AFTERNOON MARKETING SPEAKERHOW TO THRIVE IN THE EXPRESSION ECONOMY

Consumers can now fill their day with content dedicated to their hobbies, passions and the things that interest them most. For business, that’s a problem. Consumers used to vote with their wallets. Now they vote with their time. They’re more innovative than you are. Often, they’re even more helpful than you are. In the battle for time, your competition isn’t the category leader. It’s the consumer. It doesn’t matter if you’re selling a product, or pitching a new idea, your biggest challenge is someone willingly giving you the time to do it.

Speaker Profile: Relevant, engaging, and interactive, Ron Tite exceeds expectations each and every time he takes the stage. Named one of the “Top 10 Creative Canadians” by Marketing Magazine, he’s been an award-winning advertising writer and creative director for some of the world’s most respected brands, including Hershey, Kraft, Intel, Microsoft, and Volvo. Addressing a variety of topics surrounding branding, corporate strategy, creativity, content, and social media.

TUESDAY MORNING KEYNOTEWHY SIMPLE WINS: ESCAPE THE COMPLEXITY TRAP AND GET TO WORK THAT MATTERS

Complexity is killing companies’ ability to innovate and adapt, and simplicity is fast becoming the competitive advantage of our time. Drawing on research and themes from her latest book, Why Simple Wins, Bodell inspires leaders and their teams to proactively move beyond the feelings of frustration and futility that come with so much unproductive work in today’s corporate world, to create a corporate culture where valuable, essential, meaningful work is the norm. By learning how to eliminate redundancies, communicate with clarity, and make simplification a habit, individuals and companies can begin to recognize which activities are time-sucks and which create lasting value. Lisa Bodell shares tools and takeaways on how organizations can eradicate complexity, and allow Simplicity to be their new operating system towards an innovative workplace culture.

WEDNESDAY CLOSING KEYNOTEBLOCKCHAIN REVOLUTION: HOW THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND BITCOIN IS CHANGING MONEY, BUSINESS, AND THE WORLD

Blockchain is the open-access, secure global platform on which Bitcoin is based. In a world where, according to Alex Tapscott, “It’s cheaper and faster to mail an anvil to China than it is to send $100”, Blockchain facilitates an authenticated, peer-to-peer transfer of value without an intermediary (such as a bank), in a manner that is transparent, public, permanent — and completely anonymous.

Speaker Profile: Alex Tapscott is an expert in early-stage, high growth companies and path-breaking business ventures. A passionate advocate for the disruptive potential of new technologies as key to start-up success, he believes the emerging Blockchain platform will provide significant entrepreneurial opportunities as it revolutionizes the way we transact our lives.

Attendees will receive individual feedback on their own resilience, and engage in exercises that provide practice in applying each of the characteristics. YOUNG LEADER FINAL PRESENTATIONSThe finalists of the National Young Leaders Awards will present a workshop on a thought provoking topic – not to be missed!

MEMBER GROWTHFinancial Services in the Digital Information Age: The Evolution from a Product-Centric to a Professional ModelThe financial services industry is evolving from a product-centric model to a professional model where the true value of the human advisor lies in the holistic view of the client, an unwavering ethical commitment, and the non-technical professional skills that the planner brings.Tomorrow’s financial professionals must become trusted advisors, coaches, relationship and behavioural managers, all the while learning to apply technology efficiently and knowing what digital solutions may work best to meet their clients’ product needs.

POLICY AND ADVOCACYThe Business Case for Credit Union Government RelationsFor a lot of credit unions – especially smaller ones – government relations is the elephant in your inbox. We all know it’s important, but building relationships with your provincial or federal legislators takes time that is often in short supply. Our workshop presenters will challenge you to consider how good advocacy can be more than just important, but something useful for your credit union. Useful to growing your business, to avoiding tomorrow’s regulatory problems and even to attracting members and building loyalty.

CREDIT UNION GOVERNANCE & LEADERSHIPBest Practice for Audit Committee Effectiveness This practice will focus on many technical aspects of audit committee governance, with a focus on “real life” best practices and issues to consider to increase the effectiveness of your audit committee. We will cover the five guiding principles, top 10 “to dos” and review mandate and performance expectations.

FUTURE FOCUSGeneration Squeeze: Serving Members in the Sharing Economy Canadians in their 40’s and younger are feeling the squeeze. They go to school longer, pay more for it, only to graduate into jobs that pay less in real terms, and then strive to meet housing costs that are $100,000s more than previous generations. All of this is combined with a world where information is fast and furious, and getting our word out in 140 characters seems impossible. This session is based on research completed by Generation Squeeze – an innovative new advocacy group for Canadian’s in their 40’s and younger – with commentary from a member of the National Young Leaders Committee. The speakers will present a thoughtful look at who this generation strives to be, the issues they are facing, and how they intend to navigate them. We’ll discuss how intergenerational equity is (or isn’t) showing up in this country – and why financial service products that meet the needs of previous generations may no longer work.

MEMBER GROWTHThe Changing Competitive Wealth Management Landscape for Credit Unions Driven by technology, regulations and shifting demographics, disruptive changes and innovations are reshaping every aspect of how financial services are structured, provided and consumed.Speakers will focus on the impact of these changes on fee transparency, advisor value, product preference, customer expectations, and distribution models in the wealth management industry; and the implications for credit unions.

POLICY AND ADVOCACYAdvocacy: The View from the Other Side of the TableKnow your audience. It’s good advice for speechwriters and presenters – and it’s just as good for government relations too. The legislators and regulators you meet with are flooded by lobbyists, stakeholder demands, political pressures, and media scrutiny, all while trying to make progress on the job they have to do. Our panel will help you understand what’s going on, on the other side of the advocacy table, so your credit union can build constructive and mutually-beneficial relationships with our government partners.

CREDIT UNION GOVERNANCE & LEADERSHIPMaintaining and Developing Culture for Your Credit Union Being people-oriented organizations, credit unions tend to have strong cultures which permeate to both employees and members. Does your culture need to evolve as the environmental and economical conditions shift? If you are involved in a merger of credit unions, do you need to integrate cultures or develop a new culture for the merged entity? This interactive session will focus on why integrating cultures sometimes fails and how to develop your ideal culture.

MARKETINGSticky Branding: First Choice AdvantageSpeaker: Jeremy Miller

Do customers choose your brand first? This question is the essence of branding. Branding is not about logos, taglines, websites, or colors. Branding is about the bond you form with your customers — a bond where they choose you first. This is what separates average companies from Sticky Brands. When you have a Sticky Brand your customers think of you first. They refer you first. They choose you first. And they come back again and again. That relationship is what makes your brand sticky.

Payments Canada ModernizationAt the heart of our economy is a national payments system, safely circulating billions of dollars each day. But the payments system must modernize to support the rapidly changing needs and expectations of the Canadian marketplace, foster innovation and strengthen competition within the payments ecosystem.Attend Workshop L, to hear from Payments Canada and credit union system executives to understand what the intention is, how it will impact Canada and specifically how it may impact Canadian Credit Unions.

POLICY AND ADVOCACYTake up the Field: The Tension between Federal-Provincial Jurisdiction and What it Means for Credit UnionsThe federal government has constitutional authority over the regulation of banking, while the provinces have authority over contracts. That much is clear. But it’s far less clear what that means in practical terms, because while the constitutional lines are clear, their implementation has been anything but. Provincial governments have chartered credit unions that provide the same functions as banks and some have set up provincial consumer protection frameworks that they believe, apply to federal banks. Since the financial crisis (and arguably before), the federal government has been increasingly seized with the tension between constitutional authority and on-the-ground reality. At least some provinces are pushing back. This panel will look at what these tensions mean for the credit union system’s government relations activities, especially as it concerns issues like consumer protection, taxation, emergency lending assistance (ELA), use of the terms bank and banking, bankruptcy legislation, the legacy of C-43, and more.

The Forum is designed to give you some practical guidance and hands-on tools to help you conquer the latest compliance challenges.
