Genebank collectionsGenebank collections
Collections of crop plants, their wild relatives and other useful plants
Preserved as seeds, living plants, in vitro or cryo (-80 °C)
Aims- provide plant material to
breeders and researchers- counteract „genetic
erosion“ by preserving threatened plants ex situ

Nordic and Baltic PGR collaborationNordic and Baltic PGR collaboration
The Nordic Gene Bank is the centre of a distributed regional network based on working groups with crop experts from all the Nordic countries. The new Nordic and Baltic national programmes on biodiversity are also parts of the network.
One of the main priorities for the regional cooperation is development of a common online information platform for plant genetic resources.

SESTO was developed as the NGB documentation system. The application is later expanded to serve the genebanks of the whole region.
The main purpose of SESTO is management of the plant material in the genebank seedstore.

The genebank staff have personal passwords and can edit the online data from the same interface as presented to public visitors.
The edit rights are individual corresponding to the relevant responsibilities at the individual genebank institute.

International cooperationInternational cooperation
NGB is involved in extensive international cooperation on genebank documentation. The main focus is transfer of knowledge and technology.
Southern Africa, SADC region.NGB is technical consultant and has provided training in genebank management skills for students from the Southern Africa region (SADC) since 1988.
East Africa, EAPGRENNGB contributes as technical consultant for the Eastern Africa Plant Genetic Resources Network (EAPGREN). Documentation activities are planned to start in 2005.
EuropeNGB is a central participant in the development of genebank documentation strategies and solutions for Europe. Most of the work is organized through the ECP/GR network. NGB was a partner in the EPGRIS project (2000-2003) financed from EU.

Genebanks as biodiversity collectionsGenebanks as biodiversity collections
Estimated: 6 million accessions in hundreds of genebanks worldwide [WIEWS, FAO]
Estimated 7,000 agricultural and horticultural crop plant species worldwide [Mansfeld]
More than 10,000 European wild species are considered “crop wild relatives” [PGR Forum]
