Communication Dos & Don’ts

Don’t be vague. Do use short, simple sentences.

Don’t argue or correct. Do agree and move on.

Don’t try to convince. Accept their perception.

Don’t shame. Do reassure or divert.

Don’t quiz asking, “Remember me?” Tell who you are and introduce others who are with you.

Don’t remind them of losses. Reminisce instead about happy times.

Don’t confront their repetition. Respond like you are hearing what they say for the first time.

Don’t condescend. Be aware of your tone of voice and expression. Offer fewer choices.
