Rahniya’s eczema
had been worsening
and her allergies were
out of control – dogs, cats, grass . . . harvest season was tough. We
took her to an allergy
specialist, where it was determined we would
start weekly allergy
shots. Just before
Rahniya turned six, we began our weekly
appointments for her shots at the Cherokee
Regional Clinic inAurelia. In such a small town, you wouldn’t expect the amazing
treatment we have
received. Traci (Hagen), Hillary (Anderson) and
Tina (Ebel) have gone
above and beyond to
make this last year of shots comfortable forRahniya. They arealways patient with
her and genuinely care
about her.They’ve made her feel
so special, from sticker boards and prizes for doing so well. We’llnever go anywhere else. As an almost-seven-year-old who gets weekly shots, she’s still excited to come see the
gals at the Aurelia Clinic.Rahniya shows off her sticker board with

Strategies to reduce young athletes’ injury riskSports can make a pro-
found impact on the life of a young person. Children
who participate in sports experience a range of physical, emotional and
interpersonal beneits.While it’s impossible
to eliminate the risk of injury entirely, there are
some strategies athletes and their parents can
take to reduce that risk.•Make sure young ath-
letes get their physicals. Recreational and scholas-tic sports leagues typical-ly require athletes to get physicals before they’re
allowed to compete. Kids who participate in more
loosely organized leagues should get a physical be-fore each season, even
if the league does not require them to do so. These examinations canuncover problems such
as irregular heartbeat that may make kids vulnerable to injury or illness.
When these issues are
discovered, athletes, their parents, their physicians and their coaches can
then work together to
develop a plan to protect kids without preventing
them from participating
in their favorite sports.•Open and maintain a
dialogue with coaches be-fore and throughout the
season. If kids develop
nagging injuries during
a season, parents should
report them to the coach
directly.•Warm up and stretch
before games. Many
coaches are fully aware
of the importance of warming up and stretch-ing before games. Par-ents can still keep an eye
out to make sure kids do this prior to compe-tition; warming up and
stretching helps to pre-vent sports-related inju-ries by releasing muscle
tension before kids be-
gin physical activity.•Encourage young
athletes to hydrate and
stay hydrated through-out competition. Con-sequences of dehydra-tion are severe and can
include increased core
temperature and heart rate, decreased blood
pressure, nausea and
vomiting, general fatigue, headaches and muscle
cramps. Hydrating before
competition and staying
hydrated throughout a
game can help athletes maximize their perfor-mance and minimize
their risk of injury and
muscle cramps.
I focus on improving patients’ movement capabilities in their body, so they can move pain free and move more often.

Prepare for your virtual doctor visitThe COVID-19 pan-
demic has accelerated
the need for doctor’s of-ices to offer virtual ap-pointments, but this has been a trend in the works for many years.Technology has made
it beneicial – both from
a convenience and
cost perspective – for physicians to perform
regular check-ups online.On March 17, The
Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services broad-ened access to Medicare
telehealth services to
reduce the number of people traveling to and
from doctors’ ofices and
other clinical sites. This has greatly expanded the
number and range of pro-viders, conditions andsituations where tele-
health services are being
covered. Some states are
also expanding options for telehealth to boost so-cial distancing and keep-ing people safe.
While not ideal for all medical situations, the virtual doctor’s appointment is surely
here to stay, especially as we are more focused on

Double-check insurance
Check with your in-surance company to
make sure your virtual appointment will be cov-ered prior to the session. Ask your insurance pro-vider if there will be any

it ready for your physi-cian’s ofice.Work with a local

some notes or list any
symptoms you want to discuss. This will help you organize your thoughts and prevent you from forgetting any-thing important during
the video call.To help you focus, sit
in a quiet, comfortable, well-lit place. This will
help you concentrate
on your physician’s questions as you work
through the appoint-ment together. After the
session, be sure to pro-vide feedback to your physician’s ofice. This may be a new service for them, and patient feed-back is key to improving
their processes.

The COVID-19 pandemic
caused unemployment and
left many people looking for ways to support their fami-lies.
This unfortunate situation
during the time of year when
we are used to heading out on
summer vacations has added
extra stress for many people. There has also been added
fear and anxiety about the
unknowns of the disease. When will it end? How can I protect myself and my family
from it? Fortunately, there
are many ways you can cope
with COVID-19-related stress to lessen the impact it has on
your psychological well-being.
What is COVID-19 stress?Stress during any infectious
disease outbreak can include
the following, according
to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention:
Overcoming COVID-19 anxiety

of your loved ones.• Changes in sleep or eating
patterns.• Difficulty sleeping or con-centrating.
• Worsening of chronic
health problems.• Worsening of mental
health conditions.• Increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs.
Who is at risk?Everyone reacts differently
to stressful situations. How
you respond to the outbreak
can depend on your back-ground and the community
you live in. The CDC identi-fies the following types of people as ones who may
respond more strongly to
the stress of a crisis like the
COVID-19 pandemic:• Older people and people
with chronic diseases who
are at higher risk for severe
illness from COVID-19.•Children and teens.• People who are helping with
the response to COVID-19, like doctors, other health
care providers, and first responders.
• People who have mental health conditions, includ-ing problems with sub-stance use.
How to reactThere are many ways you
can take care of yourself and
your community during this unprecedented time. And
doing so can actually help
you cope with COVID-19-
related stress. Here are some
ideas from the CDC to get you
started:• Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to
news stories, including
social media. • Take care of your body
with plenty of exercise and
healthy eating.•Avoid alcohol and drugs.• Make time to unwind
and try to do some other activities you enjoy.Remember that you are not
alone in any stress you are
feeling. Millions of Americans across the country are in
the same boat. Take the
time to connect virtually
with your friends and family
members to keep you active
in community.

Prevent common injuries while gamingGaming is a pop-
ular activity across the globe. There are
more than 2.5 billion
video gamers around
the world. Sixty per-cent of United States-based gamers play
video games daily. Gamers spend an av-
erage of seven hours and seven minutes each week playing
gamesMany individuals
are now experiencing
overuse injuries from
extended gaming ses-sions. Carpal tunnel syndrome, overuse in
the elbow and shoul-der, tendinitis, and
even something called
“gamer’s thumb” can
occur. Gamer’s thumb is
a nickname given to
a condition called de
Quervain’s tenosyn-ovitis, which occurs when the tendons that move the thumb be-come inflamed, lead-ing to limited move-ment. Gaming and
even smartphone use
can result in this con-dition. Staying informed
about the potential for
injury can keep gam-ers in better health. Gamers also can take
steps to prevent com-mon conditions.•Eye strain: Staring
at a screen for hours while immersed in
play can cause eye
strain. Symptoms can
include pain, redness, dryness, and blurry
vision. Taking breaks and focusing on items at various distances can help rest the eyes.

•Gamer’s thumb: Stretching the hand
and thumb before
playing and during
breaks can rest the
tendons in the hand
and reduce the risk of inflammation.
•Carpal tunnel syn-drome: This occurs when there’s a pinched
nerve in the wrist that causes hand or wrist pain, numbness, tin-gling, or weakness. Stretches that engage
the palms, fists and
thumbs can help. A
chiropractor or physi-cal therapist can help
people learn stretches and find relief.
•Hearing damage: Wearing headphones and listening to loud
game play can dam-age hearing. Keeping
the volume low and
avoiding earbuds that keep the noise close
to the eardrum can
help reduce risk.•Back and neck
strain: Improper posture while play-ing may lead to pain
in the neck and back. Rest, breaks and
stretching can help
reduce and alleviate
pain. Look for ergo-nomic gaming chairs, which may help pre-vent injury.
