About Mater

A Catholic not-for-profit ministry of Mercy Partners, Mater is guided by

the spirit of the Sisters of Mercy who established the first Mater Private

Hospital in Brisbane in 1906, followed by Rockhampton in 1915,

Townsville in 1945, and later Mackay and Bundaberg.

This was the start of a tradition of care and compassion for the sick and needy that has shaped and

defined Mater for more than a century and continues to inspire Mater People today.

In 2013, the canonical governance of Mater Misericordiae Limited (which includes Mater Foundation

and Mater Research) was transferred to Mercy Partners to assume stewardship responsibilities for

Mercy ministries across Queensland.

In 2016, Mater integrated its ministries of Mater Health, Mater Education, Mater Research and Mater

Foundation, under a single, unified banner. By integrating our ministries across health, education and

research, we were able to combine our services and skills to deliver innovative solutions and take

new opportunities to adapt to the changing needs of our community.

Today, we continue our path to a stronger future as we work to align all of Mater's ministries across

Queensland, with campuses in Brisbane, Bundaberg, Mackay, Rockhampton and Townsville

Through an extensive network of hospitals, health centres and related businesses, a nationally

accredited education provider and a world-class research institute, Mater works with the community

to support individuals and families disadvantaged by health or social circumstances.

Working together under the banner of Mater and in partnership with our patients and the community,

we are ready to deliver services in new ways to ensure our relevance for the next one hundred years.

Like our founders, we are dedicated to providing our services through a sincere commitment to

our Mission and Values.

Queensland, including more than 1,000 in Townsville.

Each one of them brings a high level of skill, integrity and compassion to their role, which ensures

patients receive the best possible care.

As we move forward and tackle new challenges, we carry with us our traditional Values and a strong

sense of identity which has been developed through a very proud history of devotion and generosity.

Our governance

Mater is primarily governed by our Board of Directors and Mater Executive. Their collective leadership

and expertise guide the direction of our organisation and ensure we stay true to our

overarching Mission and Values. The current Executive Chair is Francis Sullivan AO.

Mater Executive Team

The Mater Executive are leaders and experts from across the group who work together as our core

leadership team.

Led by Dr Peter Steer, Chief Executive Officer, the Mater Executive team is guided by a shared vision

to meet unmet community need and by a relentless pursuit of innovation. This dual focus ensures we
