Who would have thought that the mere idea, some 18 years ago, of hosting a reggae festival could have grown into an event of such tremendous magnitude, attracting over 30,000 patrons last year alone! Today Reggae Sumfest holds a dominant place on the local entertainment calendar, and is viewed across the world, as the marquee reggae event of the summer.

To celebrate reaching 19 years, Summerfest Productions, the organizers of Reggae Sumfest, will deliver a star-studded line-up of local and international talent. For one sizzling summer week, the beautiful city of Montego Bay will be electrified with the hottest dancehall artistes, the biggest names in reggae and top international acts live on stage.

historyThe island of Jamaica may be a small one, but we continue to make a huge sound. Eighteen years ago,

in 1993, the first staging of Reggae Sumfest took place from August 11 to 14. Since then, the festival has

grown from strength to strength, and is now widely regarded as the world’s premier reggae music event.

Reggae Sumfest 2011 will mark an important milestone in the festival’s history. As winners of “Promoter

of the Year” at the International Reggae and World Music Festival, in New York, we continue to embark

upon this journey with excitement and energy. Next year we celebrate 20 years of “The Greatest Reggae

Show on Earth”, and we felt it was important to celebrate dancehall music with the best-ever Dancehall

Night. This along with the support of our dedicated sponsors—includingRed Stripe Bold, Iberostar Hotels

& Resorts, Digicel, The Jamaica Tourist Board, Secrets Resorts & Spas, and Pepsi Co.—the festival is

once again coming full force. In it’s 19th year, Reggae Sumfest returns with bigger and better shows that

feature a line-up drawing both local and international patrons.

Over the last 18 years, the festival has sought to showcase the best in reggae music, featuring such

artistes as Sean Paul, Shaggy, Damian “Junior Gong” Marley & the Ghetto Youths Crew, Beenie Man,

Sizzla, Beres Hammond, Burning Spear, Bunny Wailer, Third World, Morgan Heritage, Maxi Priest,

Gregory Isaacs, Buju Banton and Shabba Ranks, as well as late greats Dennis Brown, Garnett Silk and

Joseph Hill (Culture). But it’s not only a celebration of reggae music. As the company’s motto “Promoting

Music, the Universal Force” continues to ring loud, the Reggae Sumfest stage has also seen the likes of

Destiny’s Child, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, Ciara, Kanye West, Lionel Richie, Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, Ja Rule,

Rihanna, Snoop Dogg, Wyclef Jean, Boyz II Men and the Temptations. Alongside the music, the festival

also promotes Montego Bay and the island of Jamaica as a vacation destination.

The creation of the festival is thanks to a group of Montego Bay business people, who, faced with the

loss of the annual reggae festival (Reggae Sunsplash), united forces to form Summerfest Productions

Limited. Hartley “Mickey” Morris, Johnny Gourzong, Walt Crooks and Sydney Reid were the first in the

group. But, within weeks the group was expanded to include Godfrey Dyer, Robert Russell, the late

Lucille Lue, Walter Elmore, and other well-known members of the Montego Bay business community.

It is their continued dedication to bring a premier festival to the island that makes Reggae Sumfest the

event it is. The Greatest Reggae Show on Earth takes place from July 17 to 23 in Jamaica’s second

city, Montego Bay.

For 30-years, Beres Hammond has provided the soundtrack to the lives of many Jamaicans. Whether it’s “What One Dance Can Do”, “Putting Up Resistance” or “She Loves Me Now”, these soulful classics awaken memories in the hearts of many.

It was his father’s collection of American soul and jazz that moved him. The lyrical style of artistes like Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, would influence him for life. This fused with the sounds of Alton Ellis, and the sounds of ska and rocksteady would form the base for Hammonds’ musical career.

He joined the band, Zap Pow, as lead singer in 1975, producing the 1978 hit, “The System” under the Aquarius Records label and other funked-up reggae jams. However, Hammond always intended to pursue a solo career and released his debut album Soul Rebel, in 1976.

Hammond formed his own record label in 1985, and built his own home studio in the early ‘90’s. On his label, Harmony Records, he released Make a Song, which produced two hit songs that were influenced by the emerging dancehall style—“Groovy Little Thing” and “What One Dance Can Do”.

The ‘90’s would see Hammond reaching the heights of success with perhaps his most famous international hit “Tempted to Touch”, as well as the more gritty hit “Putting Up Resistance”. Collaborations with artistes like Maxi Priest (“How Can We Ease the Pain) and Wyclef Jean (“Dance 4 Me” on the 2001 Music is Life album) would allow him to push into the international market, however Hammond has remained loyal to the local scene. His home studio remains a testament to this, attracting names like Sly Dunbar and Dean Fraser for jam sessions. It is also where they would “hold a joy”, as Hammond says, and make music. “We a try bring back the golden days of the ‘70’s, when reggae had the live drums and horn sections,” he says. “It’s all about what you have to offer. As long as your vibes is there, that’s what people feel.”

Beres Hammond will be honoured at this year’s Reggae Sumfest for his contribution to music.

G R E G O R Y I S A A C SDescribed by The New York Times as “the most exquisite voice in reggae”, Gregory Isaacs, also known as “Cool Ruler” and “Lonely Lover”, was one of Jamaica’s most beloved artistes. Isaacs was 17 when he recorded his first record, “Another Heartache”, produced by Byron Lee. He worked with a number of artistes and producers in the early years, as well as self-producing recordings. His first major hit was “My Only Lover”, produced in association with Errol Dunkley, with whom he started the African Museum record label. The song was credited as the first lovers rock record ever made. He then collaborated with Alvin Ranglin in 1974 to create his first Jamaican number one hit, “Love is Overdue”.

He recorded for many of the top producers in the 1970s, including Lee “Scratch” Perry (“Mr. Cop”), and Gussie Clarke (“My Time”). By the end of the ‘70’s, he was one of the biggest reggae performers in the world, challenged only by Dennis Brown and Bob Marley. This led to his first international signing, with the Virgin Records offshoot, Front Line Records in 1978, where he recorded The Cool Ruler and Soon Forward, now considered among his best work.

He moved to Island Records, where he recorded his iconic “Night Nurse”, the title track from the album Night Nurse, in 1982—the British group Simply Red covered the song, in 1997 to great success. After Island, he began a period of prolific recording including “Rumours” in 1988. He would also team up with singers like Freddie McGregor, Ninja Man and Beres Hammond (“One Good Turn”).

Although Isaacs spent much of his life fighting drug abuse, he continued to release albums through the ‘90’s and into the 2000s. In 2010, before he died, he put out his last album, Isaacs Meets Isaac, a collaboration with Zimbabwean reggae singer, King Isaac. In November 2010, the album was nominated for Best Reggae Album, Isaacs’ fourth Grammy nomination.

After a long battle with lung cancer, Isaacs died in October 2010, at his home in South London. He left behind a legacy of music—more than 500 albums, and millions of fans.

Gregory Isaacs will be honoured at this year’s Reggae Sumfest for his contribution to music.

E . T . W E B S T E RErrol “E.T.” Webster first made a name for himself touring the Jamaican hotel cabaret circuit with Billy Vernon and the Celestials nearly three decades ago. Webster spent three years with the band, honing his skills and cementing his soulful crooning style, and making his first international appearance with them in California. His first album, Hit a Bomb, made Webster a name in Europe, and was the first of nine albums released both in Jamaica and on the international music markets. Music Is Life and Musical Explosion were the first albums released in Jamaica, and both enjoyed extensive radio play and success on the RJR Top Ten charts for weeks. Webster followed up with Reflections, Lament of a Dread, Mankind, and Changes, all released to his faithful European fans. Webster then went on to work with a series of veteran producers, including Barry O’Hare and Phillip ‘Termite’ Roane. The collaborations produced Freedom Fighter, E.T. Webster Sings Golden Hits, and Colour You.

Throughout his multi-faceted career, Webster has shared the stage with a range of reggae and dancehall artistes. He’s opened for Billy Paul, the Manhattans, the ChiLites, Ronnie Dyson, and Chuck Jackson, and shared international stages with Heavy D., Cocoa Tea, PaPa San, Super Cat, Inner Circle, and Culture. Webster also stole the spotlight at numerous acclaimed Reggae concerts, including the Bob Marley Day 15th Annual Festival; Third World’s 20th Anniversary Concert; the Reggae Rama Concert in Winnipeg, Canada; the Ethiopian New Year Celebration by the Rastafari Organization; the All That Heritage & Jazz Festival; the African Liberation Show, and the Montego Bay Unity Concert. After performing at the inaugural Reggae Sumfest concert in 1993, Webster returns to the stage with a new album, Inner Path.

E.T. Webster will be honoured at Reggae Sumfest 2011, for his contribution to the Jamaican music industry.

Over the past two decades, the Chicago native has mastered the art of reinvention, collaborating with some of the music’s hottest names, including T.I., Keri Hilson, and Snoop Dogg. While he’s known for his sultry R&B vocals that gets the lovers out on the dance floor, R. Kelly isn’t afraid to pick-up the tempo and get the crowd moving. Fans won’t soon forget his 2003 hit “Step in the Name of Love”, with its feel-good melody, or the inspirational triple Grammy winner “I Believe I can Fly”. As infamous for her curves and outlandish fashion choices as she is for her ingenious lyrics, Nicki Minaj was the obvious choice for last year’s “Made You Look” award at the BET Hip Hop Awards. Born Onika Tanya Maraj in Trinidad and Tobago, the pint-sized rapper and singer-songwriter relocated to Queens, New York, at an early age, and started laying her music foundation at New York’s top visual and performing arts high school, LaGuardia High.

She immediately started turning heads with the release of her first mixed tape in 2007, Playtime is Over, and quickly followed-up with Sucka Free in 2008 and Beam Me Up Scotty in 2009. It was only a matter of time before the industry movers and shakers noticed Minaj’s skill and versatility, and in August 2009, Lil Wayne made her a part of the Young Money Entertainment family. Minaj’s debut studio album Pink Friday dropped in 2010 with a slew of hits, starting with the teaser “Massive Attack”, and “Your Love” as the official single. “Your Love” peaked at 15 on the Billboard Hot 100, and topped the Hot R&B/Hip Hop and Hot Rap Songs charts. Minaj became the first female artiste to be featured on MTV’s Hottest MCs list, and the first female artiste to top the list solo since 2002. In 2010, she was also the first artiste to have seven songs on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time.

Her collaboration with Black Eye Peas lead singer will.i.am, titled “Check It Out”, dominated the radios across Europe. “Right Thru Me” was the third single from the album, followed closely by “Moment 4 Life”, a hip hop ars poetica featuring Drake that continues to climb the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Rap Songs charts. Now that she’s the rapper on everyone lips, Minaj seems poised to dominate the pop scene as well. She’s currently touring with queen of pop Britney Spears on her highly anticipated Femme Fatale Tour.

KONSHENSWhen Konshens, born Garfield Delano Spence, quit his job as a national public health lab technician and started cutting dub plates, his friends had no idea what to think. “A lot of people really couldn’t believe I was doing music because I didn’t really show any signs of liking it earlier. Later on I became addicted and even started ghostwriting for people. I just wanted to create something new every day,” he says. The then 20-year-old caught a break when he joined the Cash Flow musical family and released his first single on the Guilty riddim, an overnight success and number one hit in Japan. His smash hit, “Winner” turned this former music fan into an overnight household name. Five years after his debut, Konshens has taken advantage of having the pick of collaborators, partnering with industry veteran Bounty Killer, and the soulful Tarrus Riley.

BEENIE MANThe Docter, Ras Moses, the Girls Dem Sugar, the self-proclaimed King of Dancehall, Beenie Man is an epic personality who is as notorious onstage as he is off. With a career that has spanned 32 years—the Doctor started performing when he was just five-years-old—Beenie Man has simultaneously catapulted his own career while further promoting the Jamaican music industry. He won the Best Reggae Album Grammy Award in 2000 for Art and Life, which featured Wyclef Jean and Arturo Sandoval. That was just the beginning of his incredible collaborations. He has created musical magic with some of America’s top hip hop and R&B artistes, including Mya, Janet Jackson, and Talib Kweli. His 2010 chart topper “I’m Okay/ Drinking Rum & Red Bull” is proof that, three decades later, he’s still got it.

MAVADOWho would have thought that Mavado, aka David Constantine Brooks, got his musical start when his grandmother first took him to church to sing? The artiste quickly caught the bug and translated his love of music and admiration for his childhood idol, Bounty Killer, into the beginnings of a career. When Mavado met “The General” himself at age 15, the dancehall powerhouse took the young performer under his wing. In 2004, Mavado released his first single “Real McKoy” on the Anger Management riddim, kick-starting a career that has led to his songs being in the Grand Theft Auto IV trailers, a prestigious UK MOBO Award for Best Reggae Act in 2008, and a collaboration with Canadian rapper Drake.

VYBZ KARTELNever has a Jamaican dancehall artiste been as much of an influential “brand” as Vybz Kartel. Born Adidja Palmer, Kartel started his career as a teenager in 1993, coming onto the scene with “Love Fat Woman” on the One Heart label, under the guidance of Bounty Killer. When “Ramping Shop”, which debuted on the US Billboard Top 100 Singles chart, and “Dollar Sign” got heavy rotation on American urban radio stations, Kartel established himself as an international success. “Clarks”, his biggest single to date, was one of three singles to get the most American radio play in 40 weeks, and sent sales of Clarks footwear through the roof, a first for the company in years. With his Street Vybz rum, soap, Daggering condoms, and a shoe line in the works, Kartel may soon be going by Vybz Kartel Inc.

TANYA STEPHENSConsidered one of the top female artistes in Jamaica by the Washington Post, Tanya Stephens released her first album, Big Things a Gwaan, in 1994. It wasn’t until her singles “Yuh Nuh Ready Fi Dis Yet” and “It’s a Pity” were released that the world stood up and took notice. Critics were impressed with Stephens’ evolution beyond “the same old four topics,” as she called the themes of Dancehall, and her insistence on tackling relevant social issues. An intuitive and intelligent performer, Stephens continuously pushes the boundary of what it means to be a contemporary female Dancehall artist, singing about love, adultery, and racial injustice, as evidenced by the track “Rosa”, about civil-rights pioneer Rosa Parks.

RITCHIE LOOPSAfter graduating from Excelsior Community College with a degree in IT, Ritchie Loops made the rounds at Gumption Recording Studios and the Big Yard Label, earning his chops as a riddim producer. The experience with Robert Livingston at Big Yard was highly influential in Loops’ development as a musician. “My main focus is to work on improving my skills by incorporating new styles of beats—a fusion of dancehall, disco, rock and hip hop—and songs that people will enjoy,” he says. In 2010, Loops finally stepped behind the mic and produced one of the summer’s biggest hits, “My Cupp”. With partnerships with the likes of Shaggy, Ce’Cile, Christopher Martin, and Tony Matterhorn already under his belt, the sky is the limit for this 23-year-old sensation.

HALF PINTWhen you call the same neighbourhood that produced Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown, and Lee “Scratch” Perry home, roots reggae isn’t a choice, it’s an innate part of your being. This was the case for Half Pint, who started his career touring the island with sound systems like Gemini, Black Scorpio, and Killimanjaro. He released his first single, “Sally”, in 1983, and followed it up with “Mr. Landlord”, “Level the Vibes”, “Substitute Lover”, and the widely acclaimed “Victory”. Half Pint is the only reggae artiste to date to be signed to the prestigious BMG Music Publishing Company, joining other musical giants like Whitney Houston.

CHRISTOPHER MARTINWhen Christopher Martin won the 2005 “Digicel Rising Stars” competition, fans across the island knew he would be more than a one-hit wonder. “I want every household across the world to know and love my music, and where I come from,” Martin said. He quickly proved that he was here to stay, being the first Rising Stars alumnus to score a chart-topping single in Jamaica. His hits “Nah Go Change”, “Take My Wings”, “Tonight”, and “Giving It” have only solidified his fan base, bringing him closer and closer to that household name status. He also gave fans the chart-smashing single, “Jamaican Girls” and partnered with Busy Signal to produce “Gallis”.

JAH CUREJah Cure, a protégé of Capleton, burst onto the Jamaican music scene with the fiery “King in this Jungle”, a duet with Sizzla. His first album came in 2000, Free Jah Cure the Album the Truth. He followed up with Ghetto Life in 2000, and Freedom Blues in 2005. All three albums received tremendous critical acclaim, praising Cure’s lyrical dexterity and his unique sound. In 2009 he released The Universal Cure, which featured the tracks “Hot Long Time”, featuring Mavado, Junior Reid, Flo Rida, and “Journey”, and “Mr. Jailer”. Cure partnered with Mavado again in 2010, along with Rick Ross, on the single “Like I See it” on his World Cry album.

WAYNE WONDERA songwriter from the age of 13, Wayne Wonder got his career break when he worked with reggae producer, King Tubby, on his first single, “Long Lasting Love”, in 1985. When King Tubby was killed in 1988, Wonder’s career suffered a slight setback, but he kept going and worked with several other producers at Sly Dunbar’s Sonic Sound studios. He enjoyed further success with Lloyd Dennis on the track, “It’s Over Now”, a prelude to his first album, No More Chance. Wonder’s career truly blossomed when he partnered with Dave Kelly and together, they produced the highly popular “Saddest Day”. Wonder went on to release 11 more studio albums, several of which reached the top ten on the US Reggae Album chart.

GYPTIANPoised to be a legend of lovers rock, Gyptian got his shot at stardom when he won an appearance in 2004 at the self-proclaimed greatest one-night reggae show on earth, Sting. He quickly followed up this stellar performance with the singles, “Is There a Place”, on the Seasons riddim, and “Serious Times”. Gyptian continued his winning streak with “Beautiful Lady” and the ballad, “Mama, Don’t Cry.” With the release of his single “Hold Yuh”, Gyptian experienced major international success. The song peaked at 77 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number two on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.

PROTOJEWhile studying at Munro College, Protoje, born Oje Ken Olivierre, considered pursuing law like his mother, however, he couldn’t stay away from music. After seven years of writing and creating, Protoje released his first album, The 7 Year Itch. The album was the result of a close collaboration with chart-topper producer, and also his cousin, Donovan “Don Corleon” Bennett. Never one to chase the mainstream, Protoje’s sound is a homage to vintage Reggae, with a focus on fresh delivery and a modern feel. He recently collaborated with Ky-Mani Marley on the big hit “Rasta Love”.

Well, take a look at our list of fun and informative facts for attending the summer’s most anticipated music event.

Do’s and Don’ts for Sumfest!

Don’t be late…book your date! Montego Bay boasts some of the most luxurious hotels in the Caribbean. Make sure your stay is a pleasant one, so check out our hotel partners for special room rates, and services.

Do come out early! Don’t miss the must-see performances scheduled early on each night. Beat the crowd and witness your favourite artistes up close and personal.

Do leave all unnecessary baggage at home. Bring only the essentials to ensure that your night is hassle-free and worry-free!

Do dress comfortably! The festival typically ends at 6am; keep this in mind when getting dressed and avoid the distraction of painful feet and legs.

Do bring a bredrin! The more the merrier! Relish in the moment with family and friends, but it may be best to keep those toddlers at home in bed.

Do indulge in our various food stations. Scope out the food area, catering specifically to your Jamaican cuisine needs. Posts are located inside the venue encircling the main crowd.
