Oral Dialogue Part I Strategies

Do not give just yes/no responses Do not restate all or essential parts of what the

teacher has just said. “Hello” and “How are you?” may serve to initiate a

conversation but can not qualify for credit. Each utterance must be a complex idea that can be

prepared by adding… but, because, or by asking a question. ALWAYS SAY 2 CLAUSES!

Do not go to the main point immediately. Put yourself in the situation and expand the conversation.

words. Do use the past, commands, future,

subjunctive .

Part II Listening Comprehension

30 points Total:

18 points: Multiple Choice in English 12 points: Multiple Choice in German All questions are preceded by a setting

given in English.

Strategies for Listening Comprehension

Do not read questions or answers while the teacher is reading the paragraph.

Focus on key words which will lead you to the correct answer.

Eliminate the answers that you do not hear. Do not focus on dates and names. Do not try to translate as the teacher is reading. Never leave a blank answer… give it your best

guess.

Part III Reading Comprehension

10 points - Long passage with 5 multiple choice questions in German.

10 points .- Short passages/ads/graphs/ brochures, etc. 5 multiple choice

questions and answers in English. 10 points - LONG passage with 5

multiple choice questions in English

Strategies for Reading Comprehension

Read through the passage completely to find to the specific question.

Do not assume that words in the reading and repeated in the answer.

Strategies for Reading Comprehension

Relate the main idea with vocabulary that you already know and deduce the meaning of other words by how they are used in the paragraph.

Look for cognates and root words to assist you in finding the answer.

IV. Writing Section

16 points total: 8 points - 100 word informal or formal

note - you have a choice. 8 points - 100 word essay - you have a

choice of a letter or a narrative from the pictures.

Writing Strategies Avoid exaggeration and humor Vary your verbs - do not repeat sentences or parts

of sentences. Make sure you have an Opening and a

Conclusion and use PARAGRAPHS!! Try to include as many of the suggestions as

possible. BE SURE you accomplish the PURPOSE. Do NOT use dialogue. Use scrap to write a draft first. Then proofread!

More writing strategies

NO English! English names will not count toward your 100 words. If you don’t know the word in German, say something else.

COUNT YOUR WORDS. Write more, just in case. (Aim for 120.)

Writing - Letter NEVER say “Wie

geht’s?” or some form of it if you have seen the person recently.

Be consistent with whom you address.

Formal - start with:Liebe(r)End with: Ihr(e) - Never use DU if it’s a

formal letter.

If you’re writing to an INFORMAL person,open with: Liebe(r ) name,close with:

dein name (you’re male) deine name (you’re female) If you’re writing to TWO

informal people, start with: Liebe x, Lieber y, Use the ihr form of address

throughout.

Writing..Picture Story

Write out all numbers. NO dialogue. Write a story about the picture, not a

description. Mention: 1) the day, 2) the weather 3) what

the action is, 4) the “problem” 5) the solution to the problem & 6) how it ends.

Be sure to have organized your story - it must have transitions and an opening and a clear ending.

Writing grading rubric: 5 criteria to meet (+ word count) - scored from 1-4

1. Purpose - include as many details as possible to develop the task

2. Organization - sequencing vocabulary, clear beginning, middle, end, PARAGRAPHING

3. Vocabulary - show your broad knowledge!4. Structure - (grammar) - subject/verb

agreement, tenses controlled, noun/adjective agreement, word order, spelling.

Word count rules

You must have 100 words. Names of people & numbers do not count.

Places and brand names ONLY from the culture count.

Contractions are one word. (Zum, im) Salutations and closings in notes are

counted. Commonly used abbreviations are used, (z.B,

u.s.w)

Last suggestions: Sleep well the night before. Bring a snack. Arrive early. Bring two pens. Be prepared to stay for 1.5 hours. Use the

time to proofread. Don’t forget to sign the declaration at the end

of the answer sheet before you leave.
