Regeneration in Haringey Cllr Alan Strickland, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing Haringey Council

In Tottenham and Wood Green, we are delivering £1billion+ of investment, including:

• 10,000 new homes • 9,000 new jobs • A transport revolution • The transformation of health, training and education facilities

Haringey is the future of London

What does this mean for high streets?

Regeneration is about more than just new bricks and mortar. Tottenham’s high streets don’t need to be reinvented – but we do need to bring out their existing strengths and restore their heritage.

•  Referenced in the Domesday Book and a major highway for centuries

•  One of London’s longest high streets with stunning Victorian and Georgian listed buildings

•  A proud manufacturing and retail tradition

So how can we support the high street as we bring growth?

Tottenham’s rich heritage

Promoting cultural history – our tropical pocket park celebrates the Afro-Caribbean community on West Green Road

The revamp of Tottenham Green – the area’s civic heart – as a meeting and event space

Working closely with traders on striking shop front designs that liven up the high street and drive business...

Bringing the high street to life

Fun, food and festivals

You need more than just shops to bring an area to life.

We’ve introduced new markets, seasonal festivals and space for street traders to encourage a buzz and a reason to visit Tottenham.

We’ve worked to set up the Haringey Business Alliance – an umbrella group of traders groups.

The majority of traders at our new markets are local.

And we’re bringing Tottenham’s maker economy from hidden industrial estates to the High Road.

Working with existing traders

•  Haringey’s economy is being transformed – based on a bedrock of supporting SME and entrepreneurs

•  Through our Opportunity Investment Fund we have given loans and grants to innovative small businesses

•  We are delivering a social return on this investment

Business growth, social growth

Bringing new life also means some major development.

Tottenham needs national chains to thrive and not just survive.

Our £100million regeneration of Seven Sisters will build a shopping centre with the floor plates major shops need.

This will mean moving some existing traders, but local businesses have lobbied us to bring an anchor store to the area.

Tough challenges

The heart of the borough surrounded by affluent areas like Muswell Hill and Crouch End.

But we know its economy is underperforming and we need to secure its future as a major London town centre.

We’re building 6,000 new homes – and growth should be an opportunity for traders.

So what about Wood Green?

We’re funding cultural projects and innovative markets.

We’re restoring Alexandra Palace and turning it into one of London’s top destinations.

And again, we’re exploring dramatic interventions at traditional shopping centres to modernise the high street and take advantage of the growth Crossrail 2 will bring.
