Bargemone is among the foremost estates of the Coteaux d’Aix appellation of Provence. A benchmark producer of the delicious, dry rosé for which Provence is famous, the Commanderie was founded by Templar knights in the 13th century, and is home to a proud viticultural tradition and more than 160 acres of sustainably grown vineyards. A recent substantial cellar renovation saw the introduction of new, state of the art, segmented tanks, to allow the winery to isolate and work with small lots, paying special attention to each varietal that is vinified for their blended wines.

In 1932, Henri Fabre fell in love with L’Aumérade and bought the estate. He and his wife, Charlotte, were among the first bottlers and founders of Côtes de Provence wines. They overhauled the château and in 1955 were awarded the title of Cru Classé, which only 18 property owners in Provence can claim. Marie- Christine Rosé is sourced from the estate jewel: 740 acres including 200 acres of Cru Classé land in Côtes- de-Provence’s ‘Golden Triangle’, on a vast plain with a spicy and mineral, clay-limestone terroir.

The Mas de Pampelonne estate borders Saint Tropez’s most famous beach on the plain of Ramatuelle. Founded in 1886 by Henri Florentin Gal, the property was expanded by his grandson Lucien Gal after WWII and now encompasses 35 acres of prime Riviera real estate. Estate director and winemaker, Camille Coste, has helmed the estate since 2013. Cuvee Elegance is a limited-edition wine produced from a selection of the domaine’s best grapes. A symbol of summer, the label draws inspiration from the colors of the south and of the summer, through a vibrant and bright, optimistic and modern design.

FRANCE The magnificent 17th century Château de Pampelonne borders the famous French Riviera beach of the same name in the commune of Ramatuelle, near Saint Tropez. The estate has been in the Gasquet-Pascaud family since 1840, when it was purchased by Gasquet ancestor André Folco, treasurer for Napoléon III. It is the Côtes de Provence Rosé for which the estate is best known. In addition to the classic rosé cépages of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah, Pampelonne also uses Tibouren in the blend. This ancient Greek variety, now unique to this area of France, is valued for the aromatic intensity it lends to some of Provence’s finest rosés.

A new release to Regal this year, made by the Sancerre winegrower Eric Louis. Sourced from sustainably farmed vines growing on primarily limestone soil, the fruit is pressed slowly to extract all their aromatic power and fermented in cool stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and minerality. The wine stays on the fine lees through January to provide body. The result is a wine that expresses aromas of white fleshed fruits and floral notes, showcasing length on the palate and a mineral-toned finish.

Saint Roch les Vignes is not an individual domaine, but rather a modern production facility in Cuers serving most of the family winegrowers in that small hillside village. Built in 1911 with the combined effort and assets of 143 growers, the winery was upgraded with state-of-the-art equipment in recent years and now handles vinification for more than 200 local vignerons. The wines of Saint Roch are held to a high standard of Appellation Contrôlée laws and quality standards of the Maîtres Vignerons de Saint Tropez. Fermentation with selected yeast takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. There is no malolactic, and brief elevage on the lees.

Another new release from winegrower Eric Louis. The estate is named for Eric’s great-great-grandmother Pauline, who established the family’s reputation for quality wines all the way back in the 1860’s. The domaine is in Thauvenay, in the southeast section Sancerre, and is now certified sustainable (HVE3). This rosé of pinot noir comes from vines growing on a mix of clay and flint soils (silex). The color of the wine is a clear and bright salmon, with a nose that is clearly pinot.

Protected by the maritime influences of the Golfe de Saint-Florent, vines cultivated on the limestone soils of Patrimonio’s hillsides rarely require treatments of any kind, so winemaker Eric Poli’s practices are essentially organic (though without certification). Niellucciu, genetically linked to Sangiovese, thrives in this ideally situated inlet at the north end of the island, and when yields are limited, results in wines with more freshness and finesse than those made from its Tuscan cousin.
CLOS ALIVU PATRIMONIO ROSÉ Corsica Niellucciu 345-250-719 ∙ 12/750ml ETA: Available Now PRICING: $160 90 WE (2019) / 89 IWR (2018)
Situated in the heart of the village of Irouleguy, this domaine has been in Peio Espil’s family for several centuries. Peio took over the family domaine in 1988 after working at La Tour Balance (Sauternes) and Domaine Cauhapé (Jurançon). Working the vineyards in organic viticulture, certified for 15 years, reinforces the expression of the terroirs and the local varietals. Domaine Ilarria is just one of 11 independent vignerons in Iroleguy, which has historically been dominated by cooperative wine producers.
DOMAINE ILARRIA ROSÉ Irouleguy Tannat & Cabernet Franc 231-001-719 ∙ 12/750ml ETA: Available Now PRICING: $192 Certified Organic
Purchased in 1970 by the Durand and Valentin families, the Château was originally built in the 1500’s, on the ruins of a 12th century fort. Records of winemaking date back to 1550. Lancyre is now viewed among the top estates of Pic Saint-Loup, which has justifiably garnered a reputation as the Languedoc’s single best wine district. It is the most northerly of all Languedoc appellations. Warm Rhone temperatures require a night harvest once grapes are ripe, but this rosé is produced from some of the highest and coolest hillside parcels in the appellation, which helps to keep flavors fresh.
Cases de Pene is a tiny village in the Roussillon region of Southern France, just 30 miles north of the Spain. Ceded to France in the mid 17th century, the area is still known as “French Catalonia”. This heritage is celebrated at the winery with the Catalan spelling of the ancient Château and village Cooperative: “Penya”. Vinification methods include direct pressing, with no maceration. Temperature- controlled fermentation in traditional cement tanks.

Owner, Jean Braziler’s son Benoît represents the seventh generation of Braziliers to have worked vineyards in Thoré-la-Rochette. He joined his father in 1997, and although only in his mid-thirties, is the current head of the local wine growers syndicate. Together, they farm 25 hectares of vines, a significant holding in these parts. Jean is still involved, but his son Benoit is making the wines. The father and son team employ biodynamic farming and craft their wines in 12th-century caves carved out of limestone hills.

With the 2003 vintage Eric Bouletin took over his father’s 3 hectares of parcels in the southern Rhone village of Vacqueyras. Like Eric’s father, most of the village’s growers sell to the local wine cooperative. In taking over the family business Eric chose to break away from this process, carve out a new path, and follow the example of many in France’s natural wine movement. This rose is an interesting blend of 3 different cuvées: direct press grenache, saignée-style syrah/grenache, and direct press mourvèdre and white varieties.
