Calls for Church Reform

1. Martin Luther challenged the Pope because he said no one has the right to decide who what a person did to go to heaven.

2. Because of this challenge a new religion was formed.

3. Why is it called the Reformation?

Martin Luther wanted to reform or change the church

What Ideas Led to that Reform?

(Desiderius Erasmus, Bible, good)

1. Desiderius Erasmus said that humans could use reason to become better Christians and improve the church.

2. He wanted anyone to be able to read the Bible so he translated it.

3. What matters is that people are good in their everyday lives.

The Church Upsets Reformers

(taxes, indulgence, selling, Wycliffe)

1. The Church taxed people heavily and many popes acted like kings.

2. Many churches started to sell pardons from the church, the pardons were called indulgences. This outraged Martin Luther since it wasn’t stated in the Bible.

3. Wycliffe an English priest also said that people only had to recognize Jesus as the power, and not the pope.

Who Was Martin Luther?

(Luther, plague, salvation, 95)

1. Luther was angered by the church and worried about his soul which is not surprising since many were dying of the plague.

2. Only faith, not good works brought salvation and were a gift.

3. ML prepared a list of 95 arguments against indulgences and sent them to the church.

Revolt Leads to New Churches(rely, excommunicated,

denomination, Lutheranism, 3)1. People would start to rely on

the Bible and not on priests.2. ML was excommunicated (no

longer allowed to be a member) by the church.

3. ML’s ideas lead to a creation of new denomination (branches of Christianity)

4. Lutheranism has 3 main ideas. Faith in Jesus, Bible is the final source of truth, and church is made up of all believers not just clergy.

Peasant Revolts(peasant, right, demand, revolt, won, government) 1. If ML had the right to rebel

against the unjust church, then the peasant could rebel against the unjust nobles.

2. They listed their demands and when they weren’t met they revolted.

3. The nobles won easily with better weapons.

4. ML said that god set up the government above them and they must obey.

Politics & Lutheranism(kings, Charles V, reasons,

seized, taxes, weaker, German)1. Many European king’s could

increase their power by taking on Lutheranism which helped it spread.

2. Charles V (Holy Roman Emperor) went to war with the German rulers who became Lutheran for political and religious reasons. They then seized control of lands originally owned by the church, which allowed them to collect taxes, weakening the Catholic Church.
