Transitioning Into a Regional Provider of Addiction Treatment Reflections Winter 2020 50th Anniversary Gala April 30, 2020 PG. 2 Working Hard at Work Worth Doing PG. 3 For IBH Addiction Recovery Center July 1, 2019, was a significant date. It marked the day that IBH Addiction Recovery Center became a Medicaid agency, as well as the first time the organization began taking direct admissions. Prior to July 1, 2019, IBH Addiction Recovery Center was primarily supported by the Summit County Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services (ADM) Board and its property tax levy. The ADM Board funded the majority of the IBH Addiction Recovery Center’s clients and their treatment programs. Additionally, most of the clients were Summit County residents who had come through the ADM Board referral list. Today, IBH Addiction Recovery Center continues to have a relationship with the ADM Board, however it is also able to take direct admissions through Medicaid and private insurance. This allows IBH Addiction Recovery Center to broaden its ability to help more people in Northeast Ohio — from individuals who call directly for help with substance abuse addictions to those referred by providers and stakeholders throughout the extended community and region. “We really envision IBH as a Northeast Ohio provider,” says Executive Director, Jonathan Wylly. “Before accepting Medicaid, IBH’s main referral source was the ADM Board in which they sent us the clients and paid for their treatment. Today, by accepting Medicaid, we can take clients from a much larger region while still being able to treat the clients from the ADM Board referral list. EXPANDED ADMISSION PROCESS There are two primary ways clients are admitted for treatment to IBH Addiction Recovery Center — Direct Admission and the ADM Board referral list. DIRECT ADMISSION The first is through direct admission, in which the organization starts with a phone interview screen with the client. This critical step allows the staff to assess the likelihood of the client needing the level of care that IBH Addiction Recovery Center provides. Based on availability, the staff then schedules a time for the client to visit the center where they will be further clinically evaluated to confirm the accuracy of the phone screen. *Clients must be prepared to be both assessed and admitted on the same day. ADM BOARD REFERRAL LIST The second admission method is through the ADM Board referral list process. In this case, the client has already received an assessment from a community provider and determined to need the level of care IBH Addiction Recovery Center provides. “We communicate with the Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services Board of Summit County on a daily basis to make sure their referral list clients continue to get priority admission when needed,” explains Wylly. COMMUNITY IMPACT This new business model has been successful for IBH Addiction Recovery Center by expanding their client reach in order to provide treatment and help those in need of its life saving care. The challenge remains that it has the potential to create a waiting period for clients to get admitted. THE FUTURE OF IBH ADDICTION RECOVERY CENTER IBH Addiction Recovery Center foresees expanding its continuum of care to include intensive outpatient services to help overcome this challenge. “This is the future state of where we want to be,” says Wylly. “If someone comes to us needing our treatment services, we want to have the ability to provide it – regardless of the level or intensity of care.” For more, visit our website at www.ibh.org/admissions-process or call 330.644.4095. Our Doors Are Open www.ibh.org IF SOMEONE COMES TO US NEEDING OUR TREATMENT SERVICES, WE WANT TO HAVE THE ABILITY TO PROVIDE IT — REGARDLESS OF THE LEVEL OR INTENSITY OF CARE.

Working Hard at Work Worth DoingIBH Employees Care for Those Who Need It The Most

“Are you or someone you know looking for a position with purpose? A chance to challenge your professional abilities while changing lives? If so, IBH Addiction Recovery Center may be the ideal employer for you.

“Our employees care about people. Knowing that the work they do helps to save lives really speaks to their passions,” says Human Resources Director LaTonya (L.T.) Myers. “Our staff understands that they are serving clients struggling with a life-threatening disease. It’s what makes everyone here take their jobs seriously and gives us true job satisfaction.”

EMPLOYMENT GROWTHIBH Addiction Recovery Center currently employs more than 100 people, some of whom have been with the organization for almost 40 years and others who are in recovery themselves. In fact, employment at the center is up nearly 10% from just over a year ago partially due to the recent changes in the state Medicaid laws. “The changes in the law have served as a catalyst for us to think of other ways to help our clients in their recovery. We’re looking at new opportunities to expand our time with clients and add positions in key areas where our client population has increased.”

HIRING A SUCCESSFUL EMPLOYEEWhen hiring a new employee, the IBH Addiction Recovery Center team looks for certain competencies that align with the organization’s management staff and executive director. These include:• Compassion • Accountability• Critical thinking • Collaboration• Problem solving • Flexibility

Flexibility, in particular, is key to success explains Myers. “There is such growth in clients from day one to the conclusion of their treatment, and employees are a big part of that evolution. What was working in week one may be totally different in week four, so employees have to be flexible.”

HIRING PEOPLE IN RECOVERYIBH Addiction Recovery Center is proud to have a number of employees who are past clients, many of whom have transitioned back to the organization because they want to help create the same positive experience for someone else. “As IBH clients are being successfully discharged, they often say that they will see us again,” says Myers. “Not because they have relapsed and need the services, but because they want to come back and work.”

While the Human Resources team doesn’t ask if a candidate is in recovery during the hiring process, candidates often disclose it because they recognize how their experience can be relevant to the position. Having a similar experience can often help them better understand circumstances and serve as a source of inspiration to others. Many times, they become living examples of hope in recovery.

“PEOPLE WORK FOR IBH ADDICTION RECOVERY CENTER BECAUSE OF THEIR PASSIONS, NOT JUST THEIR PAYCHECKS.
