Reflection: The word “blessed” occurs frequently in the Gospel of Luke. To the woman who cried
out above the clamour of the crowd “Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed
you!”, Jesus replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it!” (11:27-28). On
another occasion he said, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see!” (10:23). This word also introduces
what we commonly refer to as ‘the Beatitudes’. Makarios in Greek, it is sometimes translated simply as
‘happy’. However, there is more to it than that. It refers to the happiness that derives from the
knowledge in faith that, despite our circumstances and our unworthiness, we are specially favoured by
our loving God. Thus understood, it recalls the voice that came from heaven when Jesus was baptised by
John in the Jordan: “You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you” (Mk 1:11). Of course, all the
beatitudes, especially as recorded by Matthew, apply to Jesus himself in the first place (Mt 5:1-11). They
also apply to us if we are truly his disciples.

Introduction
In these politically-charged times, we often question one another’s values. We assume we can identify our own, but it is not always easy. At some point, we all need to consider where our faith is rooted and what difference that makes in our life choices. Today’s readings address these centuries-old questions quite directly. They matter, because who and what we believe in undergirds every aspect of our lives. What would our personal inventories reveal?
First Reading Jeremiah 17:5-8
The prophet contrasts trust in God with trust in humans
Responsorial Psalm
Happy are they who hope in the Lord.
Second Reading
1 Corinthians 15:12, 16-20
Faith must be rooted in Christ’s resurrection
ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA! Rejoice and be glad;
Your reward is great in heaven.
ALLELUIA!
Gospel Luke 6:17, 20-26
Jesus preaches four blessings and four woes.
Prayers of the Faithful
Let us pray for children & teachers as the new school year gets underway, may continued learning be a source of respect & dignity, awe & compassion, we pray:
May those who are dealing with the floods in northern Queensland, with the fires across Tasmania & New South Wales, and the drought affecting farming families & local towns, may they continue to be our concern, let us pray:
This week is the anniversary of the first bombing of Darwin in 1942 during WW2, may we strengthen our own commitment to be workers for peace in our lives, our community, our world, let us pray:
Let us pray for the grace to treat one another with respect, especially our community leaders, as they strive to create an environment of peace and harmony, we pray:
For those in our community who are in any kind of need or pain, especially the sick, the dying and for those who have died. For those who are grieving, and for all who seek to help and support them, we pray.
Let us pray together.... Gracious God, you grant us the luxury and freedom
of choices. We can live trusting and hoping in humans and things, or we can trust and hope in you and Christ’s resurrection. May we choose to live and act in the fullness of your love for all our
days. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
