Reflection from Pastor Zook13Someone in the crowd said to him Teacher tell my brother to divide the family inheritance
with me 14But he said to him Friend who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you 15Andhe said to them Take care Be on your guard against all kinds of greed for ones life does not
consist in the abundance of possessions 16Then he told them a parable The land of a rich man
produced abundantly 17And he thought to himself What should I do for I have no place to
store my crops 18Then he said I will do this I will pull down my barns and build larger ones
and there I will store all my grain and my goods 19And I will say to my soul Soul you have
ample goods laid up for many years relax eat drink be merry 20But God said to him Youfool This very night your life is being demanded of you And the things you have prepared
whose will they be 21So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not richtoward God Luke 1213shy21
You might draw the conclusion that his value system is centered on selfishness He receivesmore than he needs (blessed) but he doesnrsquot share it He hoards it to himself hersquos selfshycentered
selfish and invests himself Taking care of Number 1 is his first priority His primaryrelationship is to himself
But I think that is a misunderstanding the wrong direction to go I donrsquot think hersquos selfish I thinkhersquos afraid ldquoFearrdquo is the center of his value system Fear that he doesnrsquot have enough to live

Fear the he will not have enough for tomorrow Fear that he will not have what he needs for thelife he wants to live
Fear leads to a mindset of scarcity He makes choices out of fear of scarcity he doesnrsquot see thebumper crop as a blessingshyshyhe sees it as an opportunity to build a wall against future losses anddisasters against a future of worries and fears He tries to protect himself from the futurehellip but
it doesnrsquot work You canrsquot stop the future by living in fear Jesus wants to teach you and me about Godrsquos future in this parable Jesus wants to invite us to
open our hearts and minds to Godrsquos deeper presence in our lives I think this is a Parable about a core value of the Kingdom of God Generosity To live in
relationship to God is to live on a different plane of existence It is to live in the world of valuesthat is Godrsquos rule Gratitude Generosity Abundance
The opposite of selfishness is gratitude The opposite of fear is generosity
The opposite of scarcity is abundance Our core values form our identity who we are what we seek and how we regard ourselves and
others Christ came to proclaim Godrsquos Kingdom where these values will be known and lived by all Gratitude You have been blessed and you know it You can see that your life is filled with
experiences of joy Generosity Generous people live beyond themselves itrsquos how we respond to the blessings God
freely givesAbundance We know our lives are ultimately outside of our control You cannot build a wall
