REFLECTION

Before I did my coursework, I firstly understand and read the question

carefully. The question requires us to choose one question out of three

questions, after that, we have to discuss the answer in graphic form and short

essay. Before I started my coursework, I did face problems in order to choose the

most suitable question for me. But luckily, after more and more reading and also

searching the materials in library, I finally decided to choose question which is

require us to give examples on the process of scheme, assimilation,

accommodation (adaptation), organization and object permanence based on

Jean Piaget Cognitive theory as my task.

After I decided the title of the question, I soon started to read more on the

topic. But as I keep reading, I did face difficulties to understand the cognitive

system of Jean Piaget. Especially about the accommodation and assimilation,

those two systems did confuse me as I keep on reading. Then, I just recalled

back what we had learned in our lecture and also keep searching on the

examples of those two systems, finally I manage to fully understand it.

Assimilation is about to put in the new information into the existing schemes.

While accommodation occurs when the children are deal with information that

cannot be interpreted by current scheme. These cause them to change their

thinking to take on the newly acquired knowledge.

In Piaget’s theory, I also discovered the strengths and the weaknesses of

the theory. As for educator, it is important to understand the where and which is

the stage of the learner at. So, the educator will know how to interact with the

students. But, since Piaget is doing the research by his own children, therefore it

is seem as biased because there might be different types of children and not all

children in the world are the same.

From this coursework, I also had learned that within the child underlie

intelligence and that cognitive development is the development of process of

scheme, assimilation, accommodation, organization and object permanence. We

should view children as being intrinsically active. The cognition can be

constructed with our current state of knowledge influencing how we process the

information. From this coursework too, I also learned that Piaget revolutionized

our way of thinking about children, learning, intelligence and the nature of

knowledge. As what Piaget had said, knowledge is a process, it is dynamic and

never static. Therefore, children should learn continuously and keep adapt what

they had know with the environment they are interact with.

Through the developmental theories of Jean Piaget, we can have better

understanding of the child development process. Also, from the theory, I had

learn better about children that will help me a lot in the future, either in my

practical or in my teaching in the future. Children are different between individual,

therefore, it is necessary for us to know about children better and teach them

accordingly.

Since receive the task, I admit that I did feel burdened, but after finishing

the task, I feel happy because it benefits me a lot. Doing and understanding the

task are important because as an educator, it is important for us to understand

the children well in order to teach a better student. Also, I had learned that time

management is important in order to complete an assignment because the other

assignments will keep crushing on head if did not start earlier. I also appreciate

the theory and research that had been done by Jean Piaget, without him, it will

difficult for us to know that individual has differences.

In conclusion, I believe that children continue to develop cognitively and

maintain their intelligence throughout their life if they maintain their curiosity and

remain active in explore their environment.
