    Wet Gas Compressor Snag Leads to Delayed Coker Flaring at Valeros 285,000 b/d

    Port Arthur, Texas RefineryValero Energy Corp. reported that the delayed coking unit (DCU-843) wet gas compressor (K-6300) firststage antisurge spillback opened and increased K-6300 suction pressure to such an extent that the suction

    pressure control valve opened to flare, according to a filing with the Texas Commission on Environmental

    Quality. Operators manually closed the spillback control valve to reduce K-6300 suction pressure and close

    BP Reports Valve Snag at Its 455,790 b/d Texas City, Texas Refinery December 9BP Plc reported a release of hydrogen sulfide due to a valve snag at its Texas City refinery, according to a

    filing with the U.S. National Response Center on Friday. The valve was closed, according to the filing.

    Fire Shuts Coker Unit at Pasadena Refining Systems 100,000 b/d Pasadena, Texas

    Pasadena Refining System reported a fire at the refinerys coker unit Saturday that caused minor injuries toone worker, according to news reports and a filing with state regulators. The unit was shut, and officialscontained and extinguished the fire, preventing it from impacting any other units at the facility. Operators

    are de-inventorying the unit and investigating the cause of the fire.

    ConocoPhillips Reports Small Fire at Coker Unit at Its 362,000 b/d Wood River,

    Illinois Refinery December 9ConocoPhillips reported a small fire in the new coker unit at its joint-venture refinery on Friday morning,

    but said there were no injuries or offsite impacts as a result. Earlier in the week the company reported

    minor compressor issues and problems with an unspecified unit. The refinery completed the startup of thenew coker on November 30.

    Update: Valero Reports Normal Coking Unit Operations at Its 285,000 b/d Port

    Hydrocracker Malfunction Leads to Flaring at BPs 455,790 b/d Texas City, Texas

    A hydrocracking unit malfunctioned Saturday, according to a filing with state pollution regulators. Therefinery lowered the system pressure on the ultracracker to reseat the pressure relief valves that had openedto release excess pressure in the unit, according to the filing. Operators are investigating the cause of the

    malfunction.

    Refinery December 10ExxonMobil reported that its sulfur recovery unit No. 3 (SRU-3) tripped Saturday, resulting in flaring andelevated emissions from the SRU vents, according to a filing with the Texas Commission on

    Sunoco Restarts Units at Its 335,000 b/d Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Refinery after

    Various Repairs December 67Sunoco reported that it restarted the hydrotreater 870 on December 7 after shutting it for compressor repairs

    and sulfiding on December 6, according to a filing with Philadelphia pollution regulators. Sunoco Inc. also

    reported that it restarted a isomerization unit and a deisobutanizer unit December 8 following a shutdown

    December 7. Reports of the filing dont indicate why the units were shut down.

    b/d Ponca City, Oklahoma Refinery December 9ConocoPhillips reported Friday a continuous release of more than 100 pounds of ammonia per day from its

    No. 5 gasoline-producing fluidic catalytic cracking (FCC) unit, according to a notice filed with the U.S.

    National Response Center. The filing says the release was discovered Thursday but requires no remedialresponse.

    b/d Port Arthur, Texas Refinery December 12Motiva reported that its Flare Gas Recovery 1 compressors tripped off on high-discharge pressure, resulting

    in flaring from the refinerys fluid catalytic cracking units (FCCUs) 1 and 2, hydrocracking unit (HCU) 1,

    hydrotreating unit (HTU) 4, and an alkylation unit. Operators cleared the compressors and reset them for

    use.

    Unexpectedly Shuts at Its 122,000 b/d El Paso, Texas Refinery December 13Western Refining reported Thursday that the diesel hydrotreater (DHT) at its El Paso refinery was back in

    operation within a couple of hours after shutting unexpectedly on Tuesday. The shutdown caused excess

    gases to route to flare, according to a filing with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.Operators cut the feed to the unit and followed procedures to safely bring the unit down before repairing
