Projects [Nutrition/Garden]

1. Harvest Garden

a. Harvested summer garden, pulled out plants, and amended the soil with the help of volunteers on Friday, October 11th. Removed all plants except cantaloupe because it had two fruits on the vine.

b. Prepared fall garden and created planting plans based on previous fall harvest garden plantings and my own ideas of what produce we wanted.

c. I researched fall vegetables, companion plants and where plants should be located based on sun exposure.

d. Designed layout for fall/ winter garden. Placed plants in certain garden beds depending on how much sun and shade is needed to grow.

e. Met with the Wellness Center Dietician, Ryann Miller for a consultation of garden bed plans and types of vegetables grown for fall.

f. Spoke at the volunteer meeting, going over plans for the garden and what the volunteers need to know/expect when they help out on planting day.

g. Garden Grants were given to HEP for fall and spring quarter Harvest Gardening.h. Picked up organic soil, tomato cages, gloves, and seedlings at ACE Hardware with

Lindsay two days before planting the garden. Looked into getting pest netting to keep the turkeys out of the garden.

i. Planted fall quarter Harvest Garden with volunteers on Friday, October 18th. The garden includes herbs, such as, oregano, thyme, chamomile, and French tarragon. Various vegetables were planted, such as kale, collard greens, beets, Swiss chard, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, onion, chives, lettuce, arugula, and asparagus.

j. Went into a volunteer meeting to go over where to find the shed key and garden task log sheet in the volunteer room. Explained what needs to be done everyday in the garden in order to keep the vegetables healthy, which included watering and raking the leaves from the paths/beds at least 30 minutes a day.

k. Upkeep of the garden happens every other day of the week during the entire quarter by the volunteers and I.

l. The produce has not been harvested yet, the plants are growing slow or being eaten by cabbageworms. Swiss chard is growing fast, although pests are eating the leaves. Pests are eating the cabbage, Swiss chard, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, and collard greens. I sprayed BT mixture (organic homemade pest control) on the vegetables listed above.

m. Edited old Harvest Garden signs and created new ones for cauliflower, oregano, French tarragon, cabbage, and beets.

n. Met with Edible Landscape program to discuss organic gardening practices and the mission for Health Education and Promotion Harvest Garden.

o. Every week Alexi (social media assistant) made Facebook postings about the Harvest Garden.

p. I email Greg Patzkowski (grounds men) every other week to request a pick up of weed waste at the side of the garden beds.

Harvest Gardena. The purpose of the Harvest Garden is to encourage students of UC Davis that

growing your own fruits and vegetables is very beneficial. Also, the Harvest Garden is to increase the awareness of the benefits of having a healthy and spiritual lifestyle by staying active in the garden. The Harvest Garden at the Student Health and Wellness Center brings the community together by having the garden open to the public to view and even pick their own vegetables.

d. Meetings: Met with Ryann Miller (Dietician (Week of October 7th). Met with interns and Coordinator Stacy of Edible Landscape (Week of October 28th).

e. Future Actions for the Harvest Garden1. The garden will be left on its own during Thanksgiving and winter

break. As soon as we return for winter quarter, the volunteers and I will continue managing the garden.

2. The new signs will be printed out by the beginning of winter quarter and we will display them in the garden beds next to the vegetables.

3. Once the produce is ready to bed harvested we will place “Please Pick” signs in garden beds.

4. Design a Welcome to the Health Education and Promotion Wellness Garden sign with Lindsay and Holly.

5. Conduct a focus group to get student input of what garden sign designs they like the most and which design ideas they have for the garden sign.

6. Create a Wellness Garden Journal Log 2013-2014 folder/file.7. Edit Harvest Garden website.8. Talk with Holly about where the Harvest Garden sign Vegetable photos

are located.9. Organize and include my paperwork to the Harvest Garden Binder.

2. UC Davis Farmers Market

a. Contacted the Chair, Naftali Moed of the Environmental Policy and Planning Commission and requested UC Davis Farmers Market voucher money. The EPPPC voted to grant HEP $150 for the 2013-2014 academic year. HEP is receiving less money this year due to budget cuts and being able to satisfy funds for other organizations on campus.

b. Re-ordered 300 UC Davis Silo Farmers Market vouchers from Holly- used same design as last year.

c. Made a request to Tamara to print out new stickers for the back of the vouchers with a new expiration date.

d. During the volunteer training I helped facilitate a Farmers Market tabling activity by asking questions and giving them scenarios. The activity was meant to test their knowledge and abilities to refer a student to certain resources on campus. Also, at the first volunteer meeting I gave instructions to the volunteers about where to find the tabling supplies, what to bring with them, and what to grab from the Silo storage room.

e. The first few Farmers Markets we did not have vouchers available due to late processing of the voucher funds and waiting for the voucher order to come in.

f. Weekly posts on Facebook and Twitter were made to encourage students to stop by our table at the Silo Farmers Market.

/tt/file_convert/5a72b0a87f8b9ac0538de082/document.docx

Page 7: Web viewMake sure that all announcements for the Wellness Carnival say Student Health and Counseling Services instead of Health Education and Promotion

Physical Activity and Nutrition 2013-2014 Yearly Report

g. Stocked Farmers Market tabling basket and container every week with promotional items and pamphlets.

h. Created a spreadsheet of “How-to” shut down guide for the Farmers Market tabling at the Silo. This document explained where to store the table and love lab cart at the Silo and what tabling supplies to bring back to HEP.

i. Spoke at volunteer meeting explaining this shut down guide for Farmers Market Also, reminded volunteers to explain what the Farmers Market $1 vouchers are used for and when to use them by.

j. Updated Rapid Market Assessment with Lindsay and distributed Surveys starting the 4th to last week of the Markets. Collected a total of 150 Rapid Market Assessments.

k. The last Silo Farmers Market took place on November 13, 2013. The beginning of the Farmers Markets, we had lots of visitors at our table. As the quarter progressed the numbers of visitors at the HEP table decreased.

l. After evaluating the Rapid Market Assessment I calculated the statistics and made graphs for the UC Davis Farmers Market. I recorded the voucher tracker numbers and gathered data from vouchers redeemed.

m. Planning on attending a meeting in January with the Silo UC Davis Farmers Market committee (Sam Lebow) to present my data.

UC Davis Farmers Marketa. The UC Davis Silo Farmers Market has various produce vendors and campus

organizations to promote health and wellness and support local farmers. Health Education and Promotion has a table set up at the Farmers Market every Wednesday from 11:30-1:30 offering promotional items and informational pamphlets for students to take. HEP encourages students to come to our table to learn facts about Nutrition and earn prizes/ Farmers Market vouchers.

d. Notes and Recommendations for future events: Have a photo campaign with the PA squirrel where students find the squirrel at the

events and take a picture with it. If they post it on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram and tag us in the photo, then they get a prize of some sort (or not). This can help boost publicity for the event.

Try not to have water bottle drops on Fridays because very few people are on campus. Maybe try doing water bottle drops in the late afternoon in the middle of the week when more people are on campus.
