LAW 7The Duration of the Match

• Know the time of your assigned games!!

• Youth games vary in time, ask the assignor for the duration of the halves.

• Senior leagues may vary as well, ask, do not presume.

• Substitutions, assessment of injuries, removal of injured players, wasting time, any other cause in the opinion of the referee

• Kick-offs and Dropped Balls

• What do these two starts have in common?


• They do not occur because of a foul or because the ball left the field!


Kick-off• Procedure before kick-off.

– Call captains to centre or wherever you want them.– Toss coin, have one captain choose heads or tails

(usually visiting captain) (Display head or tail of coin)– Winner decides the goal they will attack in first half,

loser takes the kick-off.– Note who the winner is. Start of second half, winner of

original coin toss takes the kick off.

Drop Ball• A dropped ball is a re-start used when the

referee stops play while the ball is in play for any reason not mentioned elsewhere in the Laws of the Game.

• Name three examples of stoppages you would use a drop ball to re-start:

Drop Ball• What is a fair play drop ball?

• You will not find it in the law book, it comes under LAW 18 - USE YOUR COMMON SENSE.

• Example: Red player goes down seriously hurt, ball is in blue teams’ possession. Re-start by dropping ball and having red player kick it back to the blue team.

LAW 9The Ball In and Out of Play

• The ball is out of play when:

• It has wholly crossed the goal line or touch line whether on the ground or in the air

• Play has been stopped by the referee


• The referee or assistant decides when the ball is out of play. The assistant raises his flag, if the referee is alone, he blows his whistle.

• Why blow the whistle? If you see ball is out blow the whistle to assure all players stop, because some coach will yell PLAY UNTIL THE WHISTLE BLOWS, that is how a player gets hurt.
