ESSENTIAL OILS Essential oils are concentrated extracts distilled from aromatic herbs, trees, and grass-es. They can be located in various parts of a plant, including the seeds, bark, root, leaves, flowers, wood, and resins. The Egyptians are generally credited as the true founders of aromatherapy. The Bible contains more than 100 references to the use of essential oils. Two stories stand out among these. Perhaps the most well known is the gift of the magi to the Christ child - gold, frrankincense and myrrh. In ancient times, frank-incense and myrrh were as valuable as gold. And then the story of Mary Magdalene washing Jesus' feet, drying them with her hair, and using the expensive oil of spike-nard. The term "aromatherapy" was first coined by French scientist Rene-Maurice Gat-tefosse who severely burned his hand in a laboratory explosion. He doused the wound with undiluted lavender oil, which quickly eased the pain of his burns. His skin healed without any infection or sign of scarring. Lavender is one of the most useful essential oils. It is perhaps most famous for its ability to accelerate the healing of wounds and burns. Lavender is also useful for coughs, colds, and sore throats. It is an effective relaxant and may be useful in cases of insomnia. Oth-

er uses are: acne, anger, anxiety, bruises, cuts, convulsions, eczema and psoriasis, hair loss, headache, hiccups, hypertension, infec-tion, insect bites, inflammation, muscle spasms, pain - arthritic, strains, sprains, rash, itchy skin, scabies, scars, wounds. Contraindications: Be sure to use only true lavender (Lavendula angustifolia). Use cau-tion during pregnancy. Arthritis in your knees? Weight and exercise matter! Maintaining a proper weight and an exercise routine play criti-cal roles in treating knee osteoarthritis. Approximately 60% of adults in this country are overweight and 30% are obese. If arthritic patients are overweight, they are encouraged to lose weight and adopt an exercise program. Typically people who exercise and lose weight experience less pain and do much better in combination with other treatment modalities. Research shows that quadriceps weakness or weakness of the leg and knee muscles are associated with osteoarthritis. In some cases that weakness may precede osteoarthritis. Muscles around the joint are like shock absorbers in a car. The stronger and healthier they are, the more they help pro-tect the inside of the joint against the everyday forces of walk-ing and getting up and down stairs or hills. Flexibility training also helps prevent stiffness that comes in association with the osteoarthritis disease process. Even with exercise and proper weight, knee arthritis may not be entirely preventable. However, the progression of the dis-ease can be slowed with exercising mod-estly. This will minimize the trauma and impact on the knees and promote healthy joints through proper muscular training. Patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis should be aware that there are various treatments available today. If you are trou-bled by knee arthritis, please consult with your primary care provider to discuss differ-ent treatment options or to obtain a referral to an orthopedic specialist.
