BRAIN MAKER by David Perlmutter, MD is his latest book. A must read!! Dr. Perl-mutter was the guest speaker at Nature's Sunshine Convention in Anaheim this

April. As one of the attendees, I can attest that his presentation was exceptional and that he received a standing ovation. Dr. Perlmutter is a board-certified neu-rologist and a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition. He is the recipient of the Linus Pauling Award and the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Grain Brain as well as The Grain Brain Cookbook, The Better Brain Book, and

Raise a Smarter Child by Kindergarten. Following is a summary of the Brain Mak-er: rates of neurological disorders are skyrocketing ---from ADHD and debilitating anxiety to depression and even dementia. But a medical revolution is under way that will forever change how we understand and treat not only behavioral and mood disorders but also chronic headaches, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, autism, Alzheimer's, and many more conditions. Astonishing new research is revealing that the health of your brain is, to an extraordinary degree, dictated by the state of your microbiome--the vast population of organisms that live in your body and out-

number your cells ten to one. Dr. Perlmutter shows you how nurturing your gut health can dramatically alter your brain's destiny for the better.

Do you know your cholesterol numbers? September is National Cholesterol Education Month — a perfect time to get your cholesterol levels checked and to take steps to lower your numbers, if needed. A fasting cholesterol test includes: Total blood (or serum) cholesterol Total cholesterol score is calculated using the following equation: HDL + LDL + 20 percent of your triglyceride level. A total choles-terol score of less than 180 mg/dL is considered optimal. HDL (good) cholesterol With HDL cholesterol, higher levels are better. An HDL under 40 mg/dL in men and 50 mg/dL in women is a heart disease risk factor. An HDL over 60 is considered optimal. LDL (bad) cholesterol A low LDL cholesterol level is considered good for heart health. However, a person’s LDL number should no longer be the main factor in guiding treatment to prevent heart attack and stroke, according to new American Heart Association guidelines. Triglycerides Normal triglyceride levels vary by age and sex. Elevated triglyc-erides can be caused by being overweight, physical inactivity, cigarette smoking, excess alcohol consumption and a diet high in carbohydrates. To determine how your cholesterol levels affect your risk of heart disease, your health care provider will take into account other risk factors such as age, family history, smoking and high blood pressure. If lifestyle changes aren’t enough to get your cholesterol num-bers down to acceptable levels, your health care provider may prescribe cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins.
