The main reason is water is often seen as an Act of God – either too much or too little. For those mines operating in Semi-arid environments, the perceived risks are seen as unmanageable. The main risks are too much water; flooding from storm events and inflows from aquifers or too little water of the right quality. There is risk that mining permits might be withheld and the increasing pressure on water resources means that there is reluctance by authorities to award permits for potable water to be used in mine processing. Most mines plan to recycle as much water as possible and control their internal process water use. This can now be integrated with the outside water impacts, including rainfall, storm water and ground water to manage the whole mine cycle contact with water resources. As water risk is foreseeable and preventable, delegates attending this symposium will gain an understanding of how to dramatically reduce the risk of water to their business. Integrated water resource management will be explained and case studies used to show where significant cost savings have been made by improving water management. Mine dewatering designs for different types of mine (block cave and conventional) will be demonstrated as well as straightforward techniques to reduce pollution . The use of simple but effective mine water monitoring techniques where data is converted to information then revealed on dashboards as knowledge will be illustrated. DEKA Dynamics is a provider of focused professional assistance to the international mining community, ensuring clients benefit from their expertise, in-depth knowledge and problem solving abilities, throughout the project life cycle from early stage exploration, through mine development and operations to eventual mine closure. DEKA Dynamics has joined with industry leading professionals and subject matter experts to provide education and training seminars and courses to organisations involved in mining, be they mining companies, their employees, shareholders or owners, or those that support or are involved in them. Their seminars and courses are presented worldwide, with the objective of educating and teaching people relevant subject matter and best practice, transferring new techniques and concepts to mining professionals, and expanding the knowledge of the industry in general, all of which help improve mine operations, personal knowledge, mine profitability and investment opportunities. Mine Water Risk Seminar

Water is listed in the top five of mining risks in all high and mid-level risk assessments yet little action is taken to reduce the risk.

Consulting Mining Hydrogeologist, Dr Morton, is an expert in ground water resource evaluation and specialises in mining hydrology, mine water management and mine dewatering design. She is often called upon by Mining companies, governments and NGOs to advise on ground water resources and, through the International Union for the

Conservation of Nature, contributes to the Ramsar Convention.

Kym is a lecturer in hydrogeology and author of many papers on mine dewatering / depressurisation, having built up her knowledge and expertise as a ground water expert and water strategist through her 36 years of involvement in mining, energy and the resources sector.

Dr Kym Morton

Dr Michael De Freitas

Dr De Freitas, Distinguished Research Fellow and former Departmental Head at Imperial College London, oversaw the move of Engineering Geology from the Department of Geology to the Department of Civil Engineering and its integration with the Masters course in Soil Mechanics.

Michael has been responsible for the Masters course in Engineering Geology since 1984 and in that capacity, has ensured, by the appointment of Examiners from the continent, that the course is well known in Europe. He is currently External Examiner for the Masters course in Applied Geosciences at the University of Hong Kong and Chairman of the Committee responsible for Teaching and Training for the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment.
