Statistics
Alternatives to Recycling
Why is Recycling Better?
Main Points
People in the US throw away 2.5 million plastic
bottles an hour
The US recycles only about 11% of their waste.
60%-75% of garbage in landfills can be recycled
Rain forests are being cut down at a rate of 100
acres per minute
The average plastic bottles takes close to 700
years to decompose in a landfill.
Astonishing Statistics
More Statistics
Each week, 500,000 trees are used to
produce 2/3 of newspapers that are never
recycled.
In one year, the US produced 160 millions
tons of garbage.
Alternatives to Recycling
In 1988, over 70% of landfills were closed.
The US government had to come up with alternatives.
Four main solutions – Opening more landfills
– Incineration
– Shipping out the country
– RECYCLING
Landfills are currently closing at a rate of two per day
Why is Recycling Better?
More than just environmental benefits
Manufacturers rely on recyclables to produce
many store products
Recycling creates nearly 5 times are many
jobs as alternatives
A survey completed states that 9 out of 10
people would recycle if it were easier.
It takes the same amount of time to throw a
bottle in a recycling bin than in the
garbage
