SSHELDONHELDON “C“CHIEFHIEF” B” BENDERENDER AAWARDWARD
Tyler Mahle was selected as the 2015 winner of the Sheldon “Chief” Bender Award as the Reds
Minor League Player of the Year. Mahle spent the entire season with the Dayton Dragons,
posting a record of 13-8 with a 2.43 earned run average. He led the Reds organization in vic-
tories and ERA while finishing second in strikeouts. Mahle became the first Dragons starting
pitcher ever to be selected to the Midwest League’s Full-Season All-Star Team (one player per
position). He went 4-0 with a 0.58 ERA in July to earn Midwest League and Reds Minor
League Pitcher of the Month honors. This award honors Bender’s 64 years in baseball includ-
ing the last 39 years of his career in the Reds’ scouting and player development system. Bender
passed away in 2008. Fourteen of the 16 winners of the award since its inception in 2000 have
been current or former Dragons.

Dragons “On the Air”
Dragons Television
Dragons in the Community in 2016
Dragons School MVP Program
The Dragons elementary school MVP Program includes 1,116 fourth and fifth grade class-
rooms in 183 schools over 48 school districts. About 34,000 children participate. The pro-
gram is in its 11th year in 2016. The Dragons MVP Program presented by Bob Evans is
also made possible by the generous support of Sinclair Community College, WDTN TV
and Dayton’s CW Television. The program is completely free of charge to the schools.
How does the Dragons School MVP Program work? The teacher in each of the class-
rooms over the five-county area selects five MVP’s based on the teacher’s judgment of
performance, effort, citizenship, and improvement. The five MVPs selected by their
teacher in each classroom receive four tickets to a Dragons game, tickets to a special
Field Day event at the stadium during the season, an MVP certificate and a Dragons MVP
hat. Dragons players and mascots visit selected classrooms over the course of the sea-
son. Additionally, 12 Dragons games during the season are designated as “MVP Game
Nights.” On those nights, one MVP gets to throw out the ceremonial first pitch to the game,
another does an on-air interview during the Dragons game broadcast on Fox Sports 980,
and another participates in an entertainment skit during the Dragons game. Two times
each season, all classroom MVP’s are invited to attend the Dragons MVP Field Day at
Fifth Third Field and interact with Dragons players.
Hometown Heroes Celebration Nights
Two times during the 2016 baseball season, the Dragons will partner with the Dayton
Development Coalition to pay tribute to all service men and women associated with
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Springfield Air National Guard Base. Dates are

Home Run for Life
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and the Dragons team up to provide kids battling seri-
ous medical conditions with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities during Dragons games. Each
honoree takes an honorary home run “lap” around the bases of Fifth Third Field during a
game and receives an honorary bat from Dragons manager Dick Schofield. Dates are
May 25, June 15, July 13, and August 17.
Community All-Stars
The Dragons partner with Vectren on the Community All-Stars Program, honoring individu-
als who have gone above and beyond to improve the quality of life in the Miami Valley.
From fire fighters to first responders to volunteers and good Samaritans, the Dragons
honor 35 all-stars. Five of them will appear on the field during a game with a tribute video
telling their story. Dates are May 13, June 13, July 18, August 11, and August 25.
