CDI Novice Team Club Challenge Representatives

Congratulations to Ashley Pryde and Ashleigh Urban as the RASDEG members chosen to represent our club at the Saddleworld CDI Novice Challenge in July at QSEC. These young ladies will be provided with new white club saddle cloths, and we will pay their entry fee for the two novice challenge classes.

Hoping as many members can join us at the CDI on Saturday afternoon and or evening as we hopefully are successful in winning the Challenge Saddle for the club. Good Luck team. We do still need an extra volunteer to help at the CDI event, so if you are going and can spare a couple of hours to pencil or sheet run etc, we would really appreciate any extra assistance.

We encourage everyone to come along and watch the CDI, and particularly support our Club in the Club Challenge on the Saturday.

The club will also be holding a Club Table at the Sat evening, and will be offering members to join us (for a nominal fee) As soon as I have more details to hand we will provide information

Member Profile

This month we profile RASDEG Member Ashley Pryde, one of our sponsored riders in the Brisbane CDI Novice Team Club Challenge

Resides: Victoria Point

Family: Julienne (mum), Warren (dad), Adam (brother), Diva & Marty (cats) & Benji (my beagle).

Occupation: Administration at our family business & law student

Favourite Discipline: Dressage!!!

Horse(s): Pancho, Billy, Billy, Pippi & Holly

How long have you been riding? Since I was 6, so 15 years

What made you start riding: We inherited a pony with our old house and I thought it would be fun to give it a go.

Best Horse/ Greatest Achievement/Proudest Moment: I don’t think I could have a ‘best horse’ as they have all been special to me in their own ways. But Pancho is by far my most talented for dressage and our biggest achievement to date was turning around a last place/ shocking test to come out and win our next test at the same comp (this was only my second comp with him). And of course getting chosen to represent RASDEG at the CDI challenge, pretty proud to have been offered the opportunity!!

Horse related goals for 2015, and into the future: Would love to finish at the top of the Novice AOR leaderboard with Pancho and the ultimate goal is to get to Grand Prix with him. I would also love to get him brave enough to go on trails and do a bit of jumping!

Favourite Food: Crème Brule & anything Italian

Favourite Movie: Harry Potter

Favourite saying: Expect the worst because then you can’t be disappointed and sometimes you might be surprised.

Most admired person/people: My parents & coach, Anjanette Harten

Something most people don’t know about you: I absolutely love history and reading about the past

Insurance

As a rider, you are only insured by RASDEG Inc for our actual competitions and not when you ride outside of those days. We therefore request people who ride at the grounds provide their own rider cover which could be Equestrian Australia or PCAQ membership, or private insurance. EA and PCAQ memberships provide insurance that offers their members rider cover when on the grounds. RASDEG also have back to back guidelines with the Pony Club about use of the facilities. Membership details for code of conduct are available from our webpage. Membership with Equestrian Australia provides a level of insurance for the

equestrian competitor. Details can be found on the Equestrian Queensland

website. www.qld.equestrian.org.au

RASDEG Grounds Usage

Due to constant use of the main arena (in front of Clubhouse) outside club events, a decision has been made that the main arena will be closed for everyday riding to ensure that it remains in good condition.

All members are advised that from Sunday 26 April 2015 after the RASDEG Official day that it is now a requirement that if you wish to ride on the grounds that you use the far arena (behind day yards) for your everyday riding. This area is available to you to utilise 24/7. There is no change in the use of the enclosed dressage arena or round yard.

Thanking you for your understanding and co-operation with this matter.

RASDEG attend the Festival of Dressage – Trivia Night

The Festival of Dressage committee held a Trivia Night on the Saturday 20th June. With a few of the girls wanting to get together, before you knew it there were 8 RASDEG members. Jenavive, Jill, Jenny, Jackie, Jo, Julie and the two miss fits – Helen and Yvette. Well we thought we had an awesome team, and took a huge jump at the start…! We were on-fire and couldn’t be beaten….. until…. Bloke questions…. Gee no bloke at our table. Then heaven forbid…. Questions only someone over 60 could possibly know. But when the scores went up, it was OK, we were not coming last – but closer to the bottom than the top. The team had a blast and we had so much fun. We just couldn’t answer some of the questions. With the winning team having a score of 55 out of 60 – seriously – they had two blokes, and I am sure at least a couple were over 60 … lol Congratulations to NADEC. The winners received a 6 pack of Beer each. The final tally showed us as “stone motherless last” with a clear margin. BUT you know – I think we had the best prize. We each received a wooden spoon with an inscription “THE GRAND LOSER” of the QLD FESTIVAL of DRESSAGE TRIVIA NIGHT 20.6.15. We will have our spoons long after the last beer has been chugged by the winners, reminding us of the wonderful relationships and fun we build within our club. Hope they do it again next year, as we will definitely need someone to bring a husband and their MUM.

Equestrian Australia has announced changes to the National Dressage Rules that will come into effect from 1 August 2015.

For judges, the changes are primarily aimed at amending the wording to reflect the new re-accreditation cycle which has been changed from every second to every third year.

In addition to that change the ADC are also increasing real-time judging opportunities for H-level judges, who will now be able to judge preliminary level tests as long as a qualified judge at F level or above is also judging the class.

For riders, Ozdressage has para-phrased the following key changes to the 161-page rulebook:

Giving the Judge at C the power to eliminate a combination who in their opinion are not able to fulfil the requirements of the test or who produce work that goes against the welfare of the horse or is abusive (clause 1.3.1)

Junior riders may now compete in both Junior and Young Rider classes at the one event if their age qualifies them and they ride a different horse in each class (clauses 1.12 (e) & 1.15.9 (d))

Confirmation that bridle numbers must be attached to both sides of the bridle or saddlecloth, and that they must also be worn as above when the horse is being trained/lunged/grazed at an event (clauses 1.15.10 (a) and (b))

Diamante lovers need to be careful as decoration of top boots are now only permitted on the top edge of boots (clause 2.3 (f))

Pony riders may wear spurs as long as they are blunt, have no rowels and are no longer than 3.5cm. There is still not maximum length of spurs for riders of horses (clauses 2.5 (j) and (k))

Riders may now wear a short sleeved shirt that is capped or sleeveless in addition to long or short sleeves (clause 2.7 (c) which also includes diagrams)

Safety stirrups such as those including top stoppers are permitted (clause 2.10.1 (a)) while lock in stirrups, stirrup tie downs and magnetised stirrups are not (clause 2.10.1 (b))

Another hit for the bling brigade with confirmation crystal mane bands are not permitted, nor are any decorative items such as flowers or ribbons, apart from a red ribbon in the tail to indicate a horse that kicks (clause 2.12)

Double bridles are not permitted when lunging (clause 2.13 (d))

Fly hoods are now allowed to be worn indoors (clause 2.14)

An exemption scheme for riders with a disability who are eligible for Para-Equestrian classification (or those who aren’t but have a medical condition) but who wish to compete in open competition (clause 2.16)

Page 10: Redlands and Southern Districts Equestrian Group ... · Redlands and Southern Districts Equestrian Group Newsletter July 2015 ... are going and can spare a couple of hours to pencil

A strong direction that riders with more than one horse in a competition be allowed 90 minutes between rides unless the rider opts for less (clause 3.4 (b))

A mark of 5 in EA tests will now be referred to as “marginal”, although FEI tests keep their narration of “sufficient” (clause 3.13)

PSG and Int 1 combinations wishing to qualify for Nationals must have at least one score of 62%, Inter A/B, Inter 2 and GP at least 60% (clause 8.2)

To compete at a CDI/CDI-W in Australia combinations must now achieve two tests at 62% in national GP competitions within 12 months of close of entries (clause 8.18.3 (a))

Greater clarification on the role and responsibility of stewards at events (clause 11.16)

RULES for Using the Grounds Bognor Rd, Tingalpa By joining RASDEG Inc you agree to abide by the rules governing the use of the grounds at Bognor Rd, Tingalpa.

FULL terms and conditions are available from our Code of Conduct. RASDEG Inc share the facilities with Wynnum Pony Club, and we have agreed to the following:

· Helmets must be worn and correctly fastened whenever mounted on a horse on ANY part of the grounds

· The GATE must be kept closed when horses are on the grounds · No horses are to be let roam free, either with a handler still on the grounds, or

left alone · No horse is to be left un-attended on the grounds without prior permission · RASDEG members should not use the grounds when the pony club are using

the grounds and vice versa. A full calendar of pony club days will be put up on our website.

These are just some of the more obvious and most abused rules. Any person found to be not complying with these rules may be subject to membership cancellation, and no lunger permitted to bring a horse onto the grounds. Non-compliance is a serious issue and affects our insurance!

Bridle numbers – now required at ALL RASDEG events.

If your horse is EA registered, please use your EA number. If you horse is NOT EA registered, then your first (main) horse bridle number is your membership number prefixed by a 9. So if your membership number is 56 then your Bridle number will be 956. Or if your membership is Number 132 then your bridle number would be 9132. For owners who have more than one horse. If your membership is 56 your first Horse is 956 … Your second horse would be 9561, third Horse would be 9562. These will be now added to your membership file. If you have questions please let me know When outside riders join us on Participant days – they will be allocated a number starting with a 2 e.g. 203. These numbers would change for each event. You can either “make” a bridle number, and attach it to your saddle cloth, or buy a number holder from any saddlery or online. If you forget to bring / make one, we will have spares available at the office for a $10 deposit to make sure you return it. Remember you can always make one and pin it to your saddle cloth. An A5 or A4 cut down is just fine too.

How do you encourage stretching?

The goal of this exercise is to stretch your horse’s entire topline, from the base of his tail to the tip of his nose, by riding him from “back to front”—using your legs to encourage him forward into the contact. We persuade horses to do this by taking advantage of a natural mammalian reflex to push back against pressure. To understand this concept, imagine standing close enough to someone so you’re leaning against each other slightly. If you step away suddenly, the other person will lean or even step toward you. You can teach your horse to reach toward the contact in a similar way. Here’s how:

1. Start in a relaxed, yet marching walk. Your horse should be listening enough to your aids to follow the track you’ve determined for him, rather than meandering aimlessly around the arena. If he is nervous or anxious, now is not the time to ask him to stretch. (However, when you’re a more advanced rider, you may sometimes use stretching as a tool to help a nervous horse relax.)

2. Pick up just enough rein contact to feel a light connection to his mouth in both hands. Hold the reins with the softness that you’d want to feel while holding a baby’s hand.

3. Turn your horse on a large circle, using your legs to maintain the same marching tempo. Move one hand very slightly forward toward your horse’s mouth, releasing a tiny bit of pressure, but not so much that you create a loop in the rein. Maintain this lighter pressure for several moments, giving him a chance to follow that motion forward—reaching his nose out and down—just the way the person stepped toward you in the example above.

Page 13: Redlands and Southern Districts Equestrian Group ... · Redlands and Southern Districts Equestrian Group Newsletter July 2015 ... are going and can spare a couple of hours to pencil

Redlands & Southern Districts Equestrian Group Inc. (RASDEG) P.O.Box 903, Capalaba QLD 4157 www.rasdeg.org.au Page 13

4. If your horse doesn’t respond in any way, quietly establish your rein connection and make a small release on the other rein. Be careful to do this slowly and gently. Pulling back too much on the reins will cause your horse to fight them. Being too “noisy” with your hands—seesawing or jerking on the reins—may cause him to yield to the contact, but he won’t feel safe to stretch forward into it.

To be willing to seek the contact, he must trust your hands.

If you still notice no stretching, make your circle smaller and repeat the above steps. Always be ready with your legs to encourage him forward if you notice any slowing of the tempo.

If his response to your rein softening is to raise his head, rather than to lower it, immediately pick up the contact again. Then check that he’s walking in a nice, marching tempo before offering another slight rein release.

5. The moment you observe even a glimmer of stretching, reward your horse immediately by softening both reins, taking off your leg pressure momentarily and rewarding him with a “good boy” and a pat. Then pick up your reins again and repeat the above steps once or twice before changing direction and asking him to stretch several times that way. Once he understands that he’ll be rewarded for even the tiniest effort, he’ll quickly offer more and more stretch.

The goal is for your horse to stretch his nose as far forward and down as he can without losing his balance. This may take weeks or even months to achieve. For now, if you can encourage him to drop his ears lower than his withers, you’re on the right track!
