AROUND TOWN

Running out of ideas for weekend activities?

Why not visit the Whiteladies Road Farmers and Fair Trading Market? Organised by a local residents’ group Sustainable Redland, the market has been a happening success since June 2006. The general impression of local food markets are a clutter of stalls selling amateur standard food products which would hardly relieve the environmental concerns of intensively farmed and over-packaged foods. However, this market is dedicated to provide more opportunity for local people to buy locally produced and low packaged products, which do not need to be transported over great distances.

Fuel consumption and climate change have made an undesirable impact on global productivity. The energy-intensive food production and distribution supply chains, which have brought convenience to our daily food shopping have also created an environmental upset that challenge both food product quality and surging prices.

The Whiteladies Road Farmers and Fair Trading Market provide local farmers and food producers an opportunity to showcase their local seasonal food to local residents. Many people who switch to buying local produce are encouraging more local producers to grow a wider range of products for flavour, as oppose to shelf life which supermarket buyers prefer. With more people taking an active interest in local food, local economies get a massive boost to combat the recession.

There has been plenty of positive feedback about the market and local businesses have been very supportive. Many see the market as a positive addition to what is already a strong local trading area and the guiding principles for participating local traders are that they should be properly vetted with produce from the South West of England, or occasionally from abroad with a traceable, ethical supply chain low packaging, food, plants and a few craft items with a link to food complementing local shops and helping local businesses by bringing more local shoppers to the Whiteladies Road area.

Badminton is well known as the top academic school in Bristol offering inspirational teaching and small class sizes. What may be less well known is that it is a world class boarding school where day girls have the enviable opportunity of benefiting from an extended, fully inclusive school day.

For parents of day girls, the boarding environment at Badminton makes the school an attractive choice which not only offers real value for money but, also, enables day girls and their parents to enjoy quality time together and a good work-life balance. Sport, music, drama and extra-curricular activities are therefore part of the extended school day, so parents do not have to transport their daughters to additional classes in the evening. This built-in time advantage also means that, at Badminton, day girls can enjoy many options during their school day, such as having their violin, swimming, tennis or dance lesson in school, but outside the academic timetable.

Parents don’t need to worry about breakfast clubs or afterschool care because the school is always open and every girl is cared for from the time she arrives in the morning until she goes home. Families can also enjoy time together when the girls get home as homework is supervised in school.

Badminton offers a range and breadth of extra-curricular activities impossible to timetable in a day school where children have to catch a bus at 4:00pm. At Badminton some day girls choose to spend regular or occasional nights in boarding, perhaps after a late hockey practice or drama rehearsal, or to come in at weekends to enjoy a trip with their boarding friends. In Years 6, 7 and 8, day girls are offered some free nights boarding which can be taken during the week or when their parents are away at weekends.

Some people perceive Badminton to be expensive and out of their reach. However, the fees are inclusive of all the above, as well as books, materials and curriculum trips. Snacks, lunch and tea are provided for all girls at no extra cost and by adopting this all inclusive approach the school ensures that parents at Badminton are not hit by hidden extras on their end of term bill.

The School’s pastoral care was rated ‘outstanding’ in its last ISI inspection report and staff take great pride in ensuring that every girl at Badminton is very well known as an individual, well understood, supported and encouraged.

NEW BOOKS

Advent Calendar to Colour by Stella Baggott(Usborne, Hardcover RRP£5.99)

A great alternative this Christmas to the conventional chocolate advent calendars! This cardboard gatefold advent calendar opens to reveal a busy street scene with plenty of colouring activities to do each day leading up Christmas. There is a little picture to colour behind each die-cut window along with illustrations of Santa and his presents, busy elves, skating mice, angels, a skiing penguin and lots more. The calendar can stand independently to make a fantastic Christmas display too.

In our new books section, we will be introducing some of the most exciting new children’s books available today.

Covering all areas, we will be reviewing a wide range of reading, learning and activity books for all age groups spanning from toddlers to young readers.

We believe that there is no substitute for a good book. From sharing bedtime stories to learning fun activities at home or outdoors, books can create some of the best moments in developing a happy childhood. In our book recommendations each month, we hope to bring you the best publications for your children to enjoy. If you have any children’s books that you would like to recommend to our fellow readers, please email your suggestions to us at [email protected] and we will try to feature these titles in the next month’s issue.

We also recommend that any old children’s books that your child has outgrown have an important role in our community. Recycling these books at charitable organisations does not only provide a new and exciting experience to a new owner, but also benefit the environment in reducing paper production and we all get the most out of these little treasures.

First of all Congratulations! You are about to enter into one of the most beautiful phases of your life – pregnancy. Your body and skin are going to go through many changes and it is easy to forget about the way you look as these changes occur, but the more you do during your pregnancy the easier the job will be after the birth.

Medically known as Striae Distensae, Stretch Marks are caused by the changes that occur as you put on weight and the abdomen starts to stretch. They happen when the skin is stretched over a short period of time weakening the underlying support structure of the Dermis (the inner layer of skin); it is here that the fibroblasts produce collagen and elastin which gives your skin flexibility and strength. As the collagen fibres shatter, due to the stretching, the blood vessels dilate causing the appearance of reddish/purple lines. For as long as the stretch marks are a reddish colour they have an active blood supply and can be treated, once they turn silvery they can only really be treated by specific treatments such as Microdermabrasion. Between 75 and 90% of women develop stretch marks, and it is likely that if your Mum or Sister developed them so will you. They usually appear on the abdomen but, on occasion, they can also develop on the thighs, buttocks and breasts.

Exfoliate Whilst In The Shower Or Bath This will increase the circulation and bring more nutrients and oxygen to the surface of the skin, it will also increase cell renewal and remove dead skin from the surface, therefore any product that we apply to the skin will be up to 60% more effective than if used on the skin without any exfoliation

Massage Your Skin DailyThis again will increase the circulation, which will encourage new tissues to grow and keep the skin supple. Creams which contain Vitamin E, Vitamin A will enhance collagen production and support the dermis to keep the skin intact whilst it is stretching. Eat A Balanced Diet Rich In Vitamin A, C & E These are particularly good for stimulating the development of collagen and elastin fibres.

Don’t Eat For 2 Pregnant women only need to increase their normal calorie intake by 500 calories a day, but these calories should come from nutritious foods, not fatty and sugary ones. The average and expected weight gain during pregnancy is 25-35 pounds; this gradual weight gain will allow the skin to stretch steadily – not suddenly.

Drink Lot’s Of Water Aim for at least 1.5 litres a day. The human body is made up of 55-75% of water and is vital for cell renewal.

Remember, it is also important to keep this up after the birth as the skin is still susceptible to stretch marks due to the dramatic weight loss, but do check that the products you are using are safe to do so if you are breast feeding.

If you still have stretch marks and they bother you there are some treatments available that can help to reduce them further but please be aware that they may not get rid of them completely and they can be costly. These treatments include Microdermabrasion, IPL (Intense Pulse Light), Endermologie, Chemical Peels to name a few.

So now we know what they are what can we do to prevent them?

Page 22: Redland and Cotham Living - November 2011

1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan, and fry the onions, carrots, peppers, tomatoes and courgettes until softened.

2. Add the rice and continue frying for about 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time. Pour in the vegetable stock in gradually, stir frequently and let the rice absorb most of the stock between each pour.

3. Season with salt and freshly milled black pepper, and continue cooking for about 20 minutes until the rice is tender, yet with some resistance and bite.

4. Add the butter before serving and stir well. Serve with freshly grated Pecorino Romano cheese
