KARACHI SCHOOL OF BUSINESS & LEADERSHIP Redefining Leadership Annual Commencement Ceremony 2015 KSBL The Karachi School of Business & Leadership (KSBL) celebrated its Second Commencement Ceremony for MBA Class of 2015 on Friday, October 09, 2015 at the campus. KSBL awarded the students a Masters Degree in Business Administration and conferred medals to the top three for their exceptional academic performances. Rakiz Farooq secured the first position and received The Hussain Dawood Gold Medal, Salik Nazimuddin Chaturbhai and Kashif Azam Bachani, secured the second position and received The Abdul Razzak Tabba Silver Medal while, Shahan Arshad stood third and received the KSBL Bronze Medal. During his key note address, Mr. Hussain Dawood, Chairman of the Board of Governors of KSBL & Board of Directors Karachi Education Initiative (KEI) said, “The University of life is the most challenging university of all. Today, the KSBL students have the capacity, the self-confidence, and the capability to be able to earn their way in the great university of life” KSBL students won the first prize in the third annual business competition held by the Toyota Indus Motor Company between the three most prestigious business schools in Pakistan – KSBL, IBA and LUMS. The ‘Battle of Brains’ is a business strategy competition held each year by IMC that gives students a chance to identify real world business problems. The scope of the competition this year was the after-sales and services sector within automobile industry. The judges included senior management from the Toyota IMC including Senior General Manager HR and Administration Mr. Faisal Muneeb Khan, General Manager HR Mr. Tariq Hussain Khan, General Manager After Sales & Service Mr. Omar Saeed, Head of Customer First Mr. Ahmed Nadeem and Asghar Ali Bawani. The CEO, Mr. Pervez Ghias was also present at the competition finale. “All Pakistan Business Plan Competition 2015” arranged by Virtual University, was held at its Lahore Campus in which 65 teams participated. The best ten business plans were selected to contest for top three cash prizes. KSBL participated in this competition with a business venture named “Energy Auditing Services” under the supervision of Mr. Yasir Arrfat, CEO of Energy Auditing Services and won the first prize all over Pakistan. The second annual Harvard Pakistan Forum took place on March 28 and 29, 2015 at Harvard with approximately 250 people in attendance. The keynote speakers of the conference were Dr. Ishrat Hussain, Dr. Sania Nishtar, Mr. Hussain Dawood and Ms. Sultana Siddiqui. The panel discussions included a diverse range of topics with highly involved and breakout-style interactive sessions. The four main areas of discussion and debate were Policy Change, the Arts, Entrepreneurship and Afghanistan-Pakistan relations – all under the umbrella of Rediscovering Pakistan as a modern nation.

The conference was attended by members of the Pakistani community as well as students interested in South Asia at Harvard, Boston, and from all over the East Coast and other parts of the country. It turned out to be an immense learning experience that furthered the goal of keeping the international narrative involving Pakistan headed in a positive and constructive direction.

The Competency Enhancement Program (CEP) focuses on developing communication skills, building confidence and tapping creativity through various interactive channels. Module 1 was rolled out on Saturday, December 12, 2015 with enthusiastic participation of the MBA cohorts. From inner reflections to role plays and from group case studies to outdoor assignments, it was a stimulating and engaging experience for all participants.

We are extremely pleased to announce that KSBL’s second placement cycle 2014-15 has been highly successful. Our graduates have been offered jobs in reputed companies such as Unilver Pakistan, ICI Pakistan, Nippon Paints, Dabur Pakisan, Nestle Pakistan, Philip Morris International, Standard Chartered Bank, United Bank Limited, Meezan Bank, Abu Dawood Trading Corporation, E2E Supply Chain Management, DHL Global Forwarding, TCS, Daraz.pk, HUBCO and UNDP. K-Electric (KE) and the Karachi School of Business & Leadership (KSBL) entered into a contract to design and deliver two levels of the customized Business Catalyst Program (BCP). This KE initiative aims to enhance its business by strengthening human capital in its management cadre. 600 Managers to undergo training at KSBL

The middle and senior management of Engro Fertilizer Limited devoted four consecutive days for attending training on catalyzing business focus organised by KSBL’s Executive Education Services. “Business Acumen Program” conducted in January 2015 was developed and designed for the participants to learn and discover solutions and intensify achievement orientation.The four day program trained EFert’s management team by covering a number of areas including competitive landscape and industry drivers, world scenarios and business opportunities, analyzing and interpreting financial statements and valuing real investments.Jointly facilitated by renowned professors of KSBL, Dr. Rehan Malik and Dr. Zeeshan Ahmed, Business Acumen Program aimed to build strategic insights into EFert’s business as well as identify and filter new business opportunities.

KSBL Executive Education conducted a three-day program on Strategic Thinking for Senior Leadership. Dr. Rehan Malik (Associate Dean, Industry Linkages), Dr. Zeeshan Ahmed (Associate Professor of Finance) and Shariq Ather Rahman (Teaching Fellow) jointly facilitated this program.The program explored frameworks in dealing with uncertainty in strategic thinking at C-Suite level and was attended by professionals from several industries including oil and gas exploration, automobiles, and airline logistics. The faculty leveraged their global experience in strategy consulting, public policy, and financial management to introduce the participants to uncertainty and planning for possible futures.

TEDxKarachi hosted their recent TED event for the Entrepreneur Organisation (EO) at the KSBL Campus. The programme themed ‘Failing Forward’ was attended by a large number of EO members. The speakers from various areas of work including Shahid Afridi, Frieha Altaf, Huma & Amir Adnan, Mobeen Ansari, Ifrah Faiz, Aateeqa Lateef, and Sara Haider, enthralled the audience with their rich experiences in life towards achieving their goals

KSBL hosted the 5th British Council Career Counsellors’ Symposium on May 21, 2015. The Speakers included CEO, Aspire Consulting, Azra Raza, Fahd Ali Asif, Senior International Officer, International Operations – University of Dundee, Saad Wasim, University of London International Progamme, Muhammad Touseef-ur-Rahman, British Council, and Rahila Narejo, HR Development Consultant. Robin Davies, Area Director Sindh & Balochistan, British Council, appreciated KSBL’s efforts in disseminating quality education at par with global standards. This one day event provided a great opportunity to the participants for professional development.

KSBL hosted a discussion forum for the National Management College (NMC) on Wednesday, March 18, 2015. This visit was a part of their inland study tours of the federal, provincial, civil and public establishments engaged in public policy formulation and implementation. The event was organised to facilitate dialogues between the Senior Civil Officers under training and Industry Experts to gain better understanding of the role of private sector in socio-economic development of Pakistan.

A Seminar on ‘Risks and Rewards of Investing through Capital Markets’ was organized by Rotary Club of Karachi Karsaz & Arif Habib Group on Wednesday, December 02, 2015 at KSBL. Prominent speakers of this seminar included Mr. Muneer Kamal, Chairman, NBP & KSE, Mr. Nasim Beg, CEO Arif Habib Consultancy & Vice Chairman MCB-Arif Habib Savings & Investments Ltd. and Dr Imran Ali, Rector & Dean, KSBL. Mr. Anis H. Younus, MD, EMBA Corporation Pvt Ltd & PP Rotary Club of Karachi Karsaz, apprised the participants about the objective of the Seminar. Mr. Iqbal Raza Kazi, President of the Rotary Club of Karachi Karsaz, presented his welcome address and gave a brief review of Rotary work. The seminar revolved around the positive facts about what Pakistan can offer investors from the local market as well as those living abroad. A total of 80 Rotarians, Capital Market professionals, Bankers, and a few students attended the program and appreciated the knowledge gained throughout the event.

Dr. Imran Ali, Rector and Dean, KSBL, in his book “The Punjab Under Imperialism, 1885-1947” provides a comprehensive survey of British rule in the Punjab, demonstrating that colonial policy making led to many socio-economic and political problems that are currently plaguing Pakistan and Indian Punjab. The Book has been published by Princeton University Press (Paperback).

Dr. Imran Ali, Dean KSBL shared his views at a panel discussion organized by ACCA-WWF Pakistan Environmental Reporting Awards on June 5, 2015 in Karachi. He talked about future generation of business graduates and their ability to appreciate the impact of Business process on the economy, environment and society.

Dr. Imran attended the Third International Workshop ‘Reviewing resources and nation-building’ as a speaker. The workshop was organised by National Institute of Pakistan Studies and DAAD Long Term Guest Professorship, with support from Hanns Seidel Foundation at Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad on March 27-28, 2015. Dr. Imran’s paper was titled ‘Pakistan: Inequality, Legitimacy and Authority’ in the panel on ‘Development and Governance of Challenges of Inclusion and Exclusion in South Asia’.

Dr. Iqbal Tahir holds PhD and MSc degrees from Australian National University, and MEc from University of New England, Australia. He has had extensive local and international teaching experience. Dr. Rajput holds a PhD from Massey University in New Zealand: his Dissertation was titled “Financial Pattern Recognition Techniques and Financial Analysis”. His interest falls into asset pricing, corporate finance, and financial accounting areas and investigates US common stocks. Dr. Suresh Kumar Rajput, received the Dean’s List Award for exceptional PhD Research for the year 2014 – 15 from Massey University, New Zealand.

Mr. Fahim Ahmed has successfully defended his PhD thesis from Loughborough University, UK, in Business and Management (awaiting degree conferral). His PhD thesis was focused on the adaptation of computer science methodologies in simulation conceptual modeling. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering from NED University of Engineering and Technology, Pakistan (2005) and master’s degree in Systems and Control Engineering from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden (2007).

In league with KSBL’s focus on providing beyond the classroom study and using innovative methods of education, “KSBL SiMERGE”, a simulation-led business competition was held at the campus on March 20– 21, 2015.SiMERGE involved 95 participants from 17 institutions from all over Pakistan participate as teams in four simulations from the Harvard Business School. The simulations introduced and tested the participants’ concepts from four key business functions, namely Supply Chain, Marketing, HR and Finance, followed by a case study on Sustainable Energy.Team Impulse, from IBA – Karachi won the competition based on the cumulative results of the four simulations and the case study. They were followed very closely by Team TIP from Textile Institute Of Pakistan as first runner ups, and Team SAS from PNEC NUST. This rigorous business competition concluded with a fun-filled evening with “Ali Azmat” Live in Concert!

The KSBL student body organised a “Games & Karaoke Night” on February 21, 2015. The Games & Karaoke Night involved several activities including board games, console games, music and refreshments. This event provided both MBA and Executive MBA students an opportunity to take a break from their hectic academic lives, and the staff a much needed break from their daily routines.
