Friday 1st September 2017

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

What a magnificent time the Year 10 students are hav-

ing on the slopes of Thredbo as they enjoy their annual

Ski Camp. Mrs. Symonds has reported that the snow is

better than ever before and that the students are hav-

ing a wonderful time.

Some photos have been sent back to school, which I

include, and we all look forward to their full report.

They are expected back later this evening having

spent the morning getting in their last runs.

With the Year 10 students away and the Year 11 and

Year 12 students busy with their Final Trial Examinations

respectively, the Bondi Campus has been exception-

ally quiet.

In the Middle School it has been business as usual.

The Year 7 students and their parents have been

asked to select their one elective for Year 8. This needs

to be done by Friday 8th September by completing

the Google doc Sophie sent home to parents. I in-

clude the link should you still need to make your selec-

tions.

Year 8 (2018) Subject Selection form

The Year 8 students and their parents had the Subject

Selection Evening on Tuesday where they heard from

teachers of the nine electives available to them. All

the subjects seem so interesting and engaging that I

hear from the students that they are having difficulty

selecting two. This needs to be done by Tuesday 12th

September by completing the google doc sent home

to parents by Sophie. The link is included should you

still need to do this.

Year 9 (2018) Subject Selection Form

For either Year 7 or Year 8 students struggling with their

selection it might be worth chatting to the teacher of

the subject that is being contemplated to get further

clarity on the suitability of the subject for you. Mrs.

Oud, Mr. Garratt or any of the student’s teachers are

available to discuss this with them to help with the de-

cision.

The Ninja Warrior obstacle

course competition for Year 8’s

on Thursday was won by Emily

Evans who did the entire

course in a handstand: incredi-

ble. The house that won the

event was Piper followed by

Bennelong, Darling and in

fourth place was Macquarie.

Having watched the Soccer-

oos being defeated by Japan

on Thursday night, which will

make qualifying for the Soccer World Cup in Russia

next year very difficult, I am pleased to share the news

that three of our students have had remarkable

achievements in soccer this week.

Madeleine Martin-Bygrave and Miro McIntyre Clere

playing with their Pagewood Team in the ESFA U14

Championship Division 1 Grand Final, defeating Easts 2

- 1 in a very exciting and tense game. Both Miro and

Madeleine had great games at centre back and left

midfield respectively. Well done girls.

Fox Bengtsson, playing for Manly United FC has been

participating in the Chairman of Korea Under 15/16's

International Football Tournament in South Korea, were

never expected to make it out of their pool but they

not only did that but made it into the top 8 after beat-

ing the Korean West National team 4-2.

Fox’s team also fared better against the Japanese Na-

tional team than the Socceroos did last night, drawing

with them, with Fox scoring the equalizer. In the top

eight knock out stage, they played the Korean East

National team yesterday and unfortunately went

down 2-1. Congratulations Fox and the Manly team for

their wonderful achievement.

Happy Father’s Day on Sunday for all the dads. I trust

your very appreciative children will spoil you.

Have a great week ahead,

Dave Pitcairn

REDDAM NINJA WARRIOR

This Thursday the year nines held the Ninja Warrior Chal-

lenge for the year eight students. It was a great success

and the year eights have done a brilliant job at raising

money for the International Community Services Pro-

ject later this year with their enthusiastic participation

and impeccable team spirit. The winner of the year 8

ninja warrior challenge is Emily Evans, who competed

twice. The first time she completed it very quickly with a

time of 1:07 mins and then did it again whilst doing a

handstand!!! The house in first place was Piper, In se-

cond place we have Bennelong, In third place is Dar-

ling and finally in Forth place we have Macquarie.

Great job to everyone who completed the course. We

hope to see as much, if not more energy from the year

nines next week at their Ninja Warrior Competition and

we encourage all of them to get involved and give it a

go.

THE UNSW BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS COMPETITIONS

2017

This year Reddam House has again entered our year

11 and 12 students, who are studying Economics and

Business Studies, into the UNSW Australian Economics

and Business Studies Competitions. This is a prestigious

competition organised by second year Commerce

students who put together a series of tests about con-

temporary Business and Economic knowledge.

The following students have done exceptionally well

and been awarded with a monetary prize and invita-

tion to the Awards Ceremony at the UNSW on the 7th

September.

Lachlan Muir - $50 prize (Business studies)

Jamie Conlon- $50 prize (Economics)

Ronnie Yogev - $50 prize (Economics)

We congratulate these students on this fantastic result.

INTER HOUSE CHESS KNOCKOUT TOURNAMENT: ROUND 3

Round 3 of the Reddam House inter-house knockout

chess tournament was split over two days and for the

first time, did not result in any knockouts. The winners of

both matches advanced to the Gold Medal match,

while the losers would stay on to compete for 3rd

place. Only 3 houses remained, with Piper still having 2

champions, giving them double the chance at taking

out 1st place.

The first match on Wednesday was between Rachel of

year 7 and Gabriel G. of year 9. Bennelong v Darling.

Usually, matches were played in a room all at the

same time but today, a silent room with no spectators.

The match was sombre but pensive, delicate but de-

liberate, patient to a fault, to the point that at half time

both black and white were on an equal footing. Both

players wanted to win.

Just before the 20-minute mark, players traded Queens

and after a quick spree of trading pieces Gabriel end-

ed up with one extra Pawn. Rachel then took a Rook

only to have hers taken moments later. As the match

progressed Gabriel extended his lead with a second

Pawn and then, in a move of desperation, Rachel

moved her second and last Rook to the middle of the

board, only to have it taken and her final real hope

extinguished. In the end, Gabriel retrieved his fallen

Queen and checkmated Rachel with 5 min left in the

match. A Darling victory over Bennelong.

The second match took place on Thursday and was

between Rhys of year 7 and Jasper of year 9.

Both were from Piper but there was no way to tell as

both wanted win and neither was prepared to give an

inch. It all started very aggressively, with Jasper, within

the first 5 minutes, taking two Pawns and a Rook in an

unanswered fashion. Rhys was taking a Pawn or two

but Jasper was in control and took advantage early. In

an attempt to devastate Rhys, Jasper pinned a Rook

and Queen with his Knight; a masterful move that

should have been the death blow that ended Rhys but

sometimes fact is stranger than fiction.

In a whirlwind of trading and taking, some how, even

to the surprise of Rhys himself, he ended taking Jaspers

Queen and Rook, turning the tables and putting Jas-

per on the back foot. As the minutes counted down

Jasper looked for a way back into the game but it was

all over. The timer ran out and in a count of points, Jas-

per had come in second place to an unexpected and

perhaps underestimated Rhys from Year 7.

With Round 3 complete, the final two matches were

decided. For 3rd place, Jasper of Piper and Rachel of

Bennelong will battle having both suffered losses, while

in the Gold Medal Match, the undefeated Rhys of Pip-

er and Gabriel G. of Darling will meet, to decide, once

and for all, whose house takes the points and which

player is named the first ever Reddam House Inter-

house Knockout Chess Champion.

ATTENTION YEAR 12: News from UAC

As you know, there is a new offer round before Christ-

mas this year - December Round 2. Offers to Year 12

students based on their final Year 12 results will be

made in this round, and in the next round, January

Round 1.

Many schools have been asking if offers will be made

to all courses in December Round 2. While we are still

waiting on final advice, it seems that most universities

will be making offers to all courses in December

Round 2.

A list of courses excluded from December Round 2 will

be available on our website in early September, along

with clear instructions for applicants to those courses.

Note that even after making offers in December

Round 2, universities will still have places available to

make offers in January Round 1, especially to those

students whose results are not available in time for De-

cember Round 2.

ATARs will be released on Friday 15 December.

Students who have queries about the calculation of

their ATAR can call UAC on 1300 MY ATAR (1300 692

827) or (02) 9119 5012 from mobiles on the following

days:

Friday 15 December, 8.30am–6.00pm

Saturday 16 December, 8.30am–4.30pm (TBC

Monday 18 December, 8.30am–4.30pm

Tuesday 19 December, 8.30am–4.30pm

Wednesday 20 December, 8.30am–4.30pm

Thursday 21 December, 8.30am–4.30pm

Friday 22 December, 8.30am–4.30pm (TBC)

If students have general queries about their applica-

tion, they can contact UAC on 1300 MY UAC (1300

275 822) or (02) 9752 0200 from mobiles.

Offers below the cut-off

For those who need a refresh on how the offer system

works, here’s an explanation on how students with a

selection rank below a course cut-off may still get an

offer to that course.

The cut-off for a course is the lowest selection rank

(inclusive of bonus points) accepted into the course.

The selection rank for Year 12 students can be simply

their ATAR, or it can be their ATAR plus any bonus

points they have received.

Here is an example of how it works:

Course A has 6 applicants, but only 3 places availa-

ble.

The 6 applicants are ranked in order of their selection

ranks.

The first 3 applicants receive an offer. The cut-off for

the course is 77 (cut-offs do not necessarily mean the

lowest ATAR; the cut-off is the lowest selection rank).

You can see that 2 students received offers with lower

ATARs than the student who just missed out, because

those students had higher selection ranks due to bo-

nus points

The University of Technology Sydney is opening its

INTRODUCTION

The Reddam Debating Society is an open social debating competition between

students in years 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11. The aim is to provide an opportunity for students to mix and discuss policy ideas on how to best build a brighter future.

Each debate surrounds a motion on a way in which society should change, and the

winning team gets to establish their policy as the consensus position for the society.

Students are given 20 minutes of intensive coaching followed by three 30 minute rounds of debating. Music and food consumption are encouraged in a relaxed social atmosphere that

is ideal for beginners and experts.

Students need only bring a device to type on or writing materials, and an eagerness to argue. The aim of the championship is to solve real world problems with students being given the

freedom to approach every problem however they choose; the only limit being peer feed-back.

WHO CAN ENTER?

Open to students from any school
