The DugoutPhil Ruggles, First Team Manager

Firstly I would like to welcome everyone to Redding Way for our first home game of the season.

Pre season saw a lot of changes on and off the field. I am very happy to welcome Steve Pearman, Keith hills, Roland baker, Geoff Clayton (keeper coach) and Trevor smith the new club Physio. And not forgetting Micky our new kit man. Great additions and great support for myself and the players.

On the playing side we have had some very good additions come into the playing staff. In honesty we have added some great characters Lee Allen the keeper is a very good recruit. We’ve brought in young Danny Thorogood , Josh Watkins and Connor Close. Up front we have added the experience of Craig Prendergast who I feel will be big for us this season. And Matty Powell whose attitude, work-rate and finishing ability will hurt teams this season.

Not forgetting a few old heads, we have brought in big Emen and Ian Messenger who I’m delighted to have become very good leaders and the younger boys will learn from them. We have a young squad now as well as some good experience, the tough bit is picking who plays a great dilemma for myself and the management team.

The pre season has been hard and the lads have been put through there paces we have got a great togetherness and we hope this helps push us forward. We played four friendlies all against higher opposition we had a mixed bag of results but for me pre season isn’t about that its about asking the guys to get used to what we want and how we want them to play. Overall some very good performances and it was a good building block for us.

Saturday saw us come away 4-1 winners away to Farleigh Rovers. The game saw us have a good solid start to our campaign. With three lads starring from last seasons squad in Jamie Doble, Dean Pitcher and Joe McShane the rest were new recruits. Our lads put in a good shift and competed very well. The midfield did well and the forward line created chances for themselves with Matty Powell scoring one and Danny Hartlebury scoring twice on his debut.

A solid start in general and I feel we tried to play our game on not the best surface which impressed me. I feel overall we got what we deserved out of the game.

On to tonight’s game where we are against Dorking, one in which I’m really looking forward to. Dorking were relegated last season so will be looking to start strong. Unfortunately they lost to my old team Sheerwater on Saturday so will be looking to get some points from tonight to get up and running themselves.

This will be a good test for us and will show us how far we have come in such a small space of time. Can we show character and the right attitude to win two on the bounce and make it an even better start to the season.

I hope you enjoy the game,

Cheers

Ruggs

Our visitors were relegated from the Premier last season having finished bottom of the Division, but I’m sure they will want to put in a strong bid this season for a return to Premier status. Dorking lost their first match of the new season with a 2-1 home defeat by Sheerwater last Saturday.

Knaphill launched their new season on Saturday when they made the trip to play Farleigh Rovers in search of gaining an opening three points, after previous openers had failed to gain a victory. But that was changed on Saturday when they recorded their first opening day win since joining the Combined Counties League in season 2007/08, as goals from Danny Hartlebury(2) Matt Powell and Phil Ruggles secured the 4-1 success at Farleigh. Match report can be found elsewhere in the Programme.

Following what was a disappointing season for Knaphill last season with changes in Management and players, the team finished in 12th place, the lowest position in the Combined Counties League since joining in season 2007/08. Although no honours gained as far as Cup or trophies were concerned on the field, Knaphill gained an award off the pitch, winning the Combined Counties League Division One Programme of the Year award, the third time in six seasons. Our Reserves were given an honourable mention for being Runners Up in the Fair Play Award in the Reserves Division.

However, new challenges are on the horizon with Management set up and players for the 2013/14 season. Phil Ruggles starts his first full season as first team manager, and has Steve Pearman as his Assistant. Keith Hills and Roland Baker have joined the Club in the Coaching capacity, whilst Trevor Smith is the Club Physio. We welcome our newcomers to the Club, as we do our new players for this season, who include Ben Acton, Ian Messenger, Connor Close, Matt Powell, Max Galbraith, Dan Sales, Robert Jones, Geoff Smyrk and Danny Hartlebury. Last season’s captain Jamie Doble, one of just a few players remaining from last season, continues in that role as the season gets underway. Manager of the Reserves, Dave Kelly, continues in that role for 2013/14 season, with the team playing in new Central Division of the Suburban League, and Dave has Lee Mason with him as Assistant Manager.

Off the pitch, Ray Coombs has returned to the Club after a two year absence and becomes the Club’s new General Manager. Lisa Harding who was the Club Photographer last season, and continues that role for the new season, is taking on two new roles, Commercial and Marketing Manager, and Matchday Programme Editor. Emma Smith has joined the Club with the role of Clubhouse Manager.

The first team played four pre-season friendlies during July, the first was against newly promoted to the Premier Division, Frimley Green (lost 3-2), followed by a 3-1 win over Woodley Town), a 2-2 draw with Premier side Molesey, finishing with a 3-1 defeat by Premier side Cove. Our Reserves have had wins last month against Molesey Reserves and Sheerwater Reserves in their pre-season friendlies. They kick off their Suburban League programme with a home fixture against North Greenford on Saturday 17th August. The Youth U18s team start their second season in the Southern Youth League on the 26th August, whilst the Ladies team commence their Greater London Womens Football League season on the second weekend in September, and will again be competing in the Women’s FA Cup.

Other items of news have included the Floodlights and the proposed Club Bar. Following on from a number of issues surrounding the floodlights at Redding Way over the past couple of years, we are pleased to announce that Woking Borough Council have granted the Club new extensions to the current conditions which will allow full usage of the floodlights suitable for senior football. The long wait for a Bar at the Club is virtually over, and we hope to have one up and running very soon.

We welcome a new sponsor to the Club, Cellar Magneval who have kindly sponsored our main sign at the entrance to the Club. Commercial and Marketing Manager Lisa Harding said “As a family and Community Club, we are always excited when local businesses partner with us so that we can take the Club forward”.

A lot of work has gone on around the Ground during the close season with workdays scheduled to do necessary jobs before the new season kicks off. A big thank you to the Club Members who put in a lot of time and effort into helping to get these jobs done.

Back to the current football being played as we look forward to an entertaining game tonight, and that we can get some points on the board, and look ahead to our next home fixture, which is this Saturday 10th August with a visit from South Kilburn kick 3.00pm, and hopes of enjoying an improved League and Cup run this season.

That’s it from me for our first home game.....back with more news on Saturday…….Enjoy the game..

Bryan

Combined Counties League Division 1, Saturday 3rd August Farleigh Rovers 1 - 4 Knaphill FC

RePORTinG bAckKnaphill got off to a flying start to the 2013/14 season with a 4-1 win away to Farleigh Rovers on Saturday. It was the first time they had won an opening match since joining the Combined Counties League in the 2007/08 season. Holding a 2-1 lead from the first half, the visitors had to wait until the latter stages of the game to add two more goals and make sure of securing maximum points.

It took Knaphill just four minutes to make their mark when skipper Jamie Doble threaded a through pass to Matt Powell who cut into the 18 yard box to shoot into the far side of goal. Five minutes later Knaphill keeper Lee Allen was in action to deny Farleigh with a crucial save, and soon after was forced into saving a stinging effort, with the ball glancing away off his near post in the 12th minute. Saves which kept Knaphill’s lead intact as Farleigh’s persistance in that spell saw Joe Chancer fire just inches past the post for the home side.

Knaphill strengthened their lead from a quick break midway through the first half when Powell’s perfect pass found Danny Hartlebury who slipped the ball home to make it 2-0. Seemingly a comfortable lead at the time, but Farleigh were creating opportunities, looking determined to reduce the arrears, which they did in

the 35th minute when Ellis Burke struck a firm strike down the middle and into goal. Knaphill went close to extending their lead shortly before halftime when Craig Prendergast saw his effort tipped over the bar by the Farleigh keeper.

Four minutes into the second half Knaphill defender Ben Acton lofted the ball over deep into the box and dangerously close to goal, which came back off the post before Farleigh cleared away to safety. After that, Knaphill became limited with opportunities to put a bigger margin between the two sides, whilst their hosts tried to pursue a second goal. The visitors though needed some stout defending to ward this off.

With the scoreline staying at 2-1 and entering the final minutes, Knaphill took advantage of Farleigh’s lack of cover in defence, when in the 90th minute a goal for the visitors was well executed, and following Timmy Taylor’s fine cross into the box, Hartlebury rose high to head home his second and Knaphill’s third goal. Soon after, Taylor went close with his effort before substitute Phil Ruggles wrapped the game up five minutes into stoppage time to open Knaphill’s League account with maximum points.

Knaphill: Allen, Acton, McShane, Pitcher (Galbraith 59mins), Doble, Messenger, Hartlebury, Thorogood, Prendergast (Ruggles 81mins), Edwards (Taylor 67mins), Powell.

PAyinG Us A visiT...... Dorking Fc

Dorking were founder members of the Surrey County Senior League in 1922, and moved in 1956 to its current ground in Meadowbank Park, having previously played at a ground in Pixham Lane.

The club joined the Corinthian league in 1956 and then the Athenian League in 1963. The club merged with Guildford City of the Southern League in 1974 to form Guildford & Dorking United, with Meadowbank as the home ground. However, after just two seasons, the club collapsed in mid-season, with another club being formed called Dorking Town in 1977 to complete its predecessor’s remaining games before joining the Surrey Senior League in 1977–78. In 1983, by then playing in Isthmian League, the club reverted its name to Dorking F.C.

In 1989-90 season Dorking reached the final of the Surrey Senior Cup, one of the oldest cup competitions with the first final contested in 1882-83. This was an achievement the club had only

once previously managed in 1885-86 season some 104 years previously. Unfortunately they lost both finals.

In the 1992–93 season, they reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in their history. In the 2005–06 season, they played in the Isthmian League Division Two, but, as a result of the restructuring of non-league football, they now play in the Combined Counties Football League. The club suffered relegation from the league’s Premier Division in 2007/08, playing one season in Division One before gaining promotion back into the Premier division through the play-offs. Last season was also a tough one for Dorking which again saw them relegated from the Premier Division to Division 1 where we face them in tonights game. Coming off of the back of a 1-2 defeat to Sheerwater in the opening game of the season, Dorking will be looking to gain three points from todays game which promises to be an exciting affair.

Knaphill FC would like to extend a warm welcome to Dorking FC, their Management and Fans - Welcome to Redding Way.

With Dave Kelly

Good evening everyone.

The Reserves have been training hard and are looking forward to their season starting on the Saturday 17th August at home to North Greenford, kick off 3pm.

The biggest change off the field has been the recruitment of Lee Mason from Westfield as my Assistant Manager. Lee has a lot to offer the club and I know will make a success of his role. There will be another addition shortly to the management structure and I will notify you in due course. In reality I’m just trying to catch up with Ruggs who has about 20 assistants!! The chairman is already worried about the cost of extending the home dugout so everyone can sit down!!

Also we have now played three games all being really good workouts. At this stage results aren’t important, it’s always good to win but our concentration has been to give everyone a good run out and see who best suits the way we want to play this season. So far we have beaten Molesey 3-2 and Sheerwater 4-1 and then lost to Merrow 4-1. The last game was hugely beneficial to our young squad as Merrow came with an experienced squad many of whom have played at Combined Counties level for many years. We still have one more game before the season starts against Raynes Park Vale at Bisley, 3pm kick off.

Lastly I wish Ruggs and his team all the best in tonight’s game. They had a great start Saturday away to Farleigh and long may it continue.

Come on you Knappers.

The Southern Youth League’s season doesn’t start for another 3 weeks, but now is a good time to look forward to see how the Young Knappers are shaping up for the upcoming campaign.

Manager Gary Taylor has been working hard to attract talented youngsters to the Knaphill cause. He has also retained the experienced former semi-pro Mark Dawber as Assistant Manager and highly rated young coach Alex Lumley. The pleasing part of last season was to see so many youngsters make their senior debuts for the Firsts & Reserves, as well as U18 captain Jonny Coats securing the SYL Player of then Season award along with the Club’s Player’s Player award.

Pre-season friendlies have seen convincing wins against Westside (5-1), long time rivals Molesey (6-1) and Walton & Hersham (7-1) and a hard fought 2-2 with the highly rated Metropolitan Police U18’s. With two further friendlies against Ascot United and Bedfont Sports still to come, the youngster should hit the ground running looking to start the season on a winning note and the prize of a first time 1st Qualifying Round FA Youth Cup away tie against either Sussex side Lancing or long time rivals Molesey. Gary also took along young sides (U16’s) to the Molesey & Meadow Sports Tournaments this summer and walked away with the titles at both.

There are faces from last year such as striker Tony Kozakis who has scored 5 goals in pre-season and Knaphill’s Golden Boot Winner from last year Mekhail McLaughlin who has scored 4 pre-season. Nico Aquino, Cameron Bose, Alfie Fairhall, Robert Litchfield, Kallum Parker-Andrew & Scott James have all played parts of varying degrees last season and will this year all play significant roles with the team.

New faces to look for include two new keepers, Alex Kozakis (Tony’s younger brother) and Fraser McCambridge-Heal who are both 16 years old. Other new names include Louis Ali, attacking left back Jack Halligan, Oliver Hudson, Rhys King, Ben Littlemore, Bradley Mulhall, Dan Qureshi &

Nathan Williams. There are a few old faces still to make their decisions as to where they will be playing this season and Gary hopes to have these players signed up shortly.

As of yet the fixtures for the SYL are yet to be released, but for the first time since the formation of the Youth team there will not be the issue of having to play a number of away games first as the restrictions on the floodlights have now been lifted. This will allow a much more balanced feel to the season and allow for the new players to get a run at Redding Way as soon as possible. The club prides itself on being able to offer some of the best facilities locally and this has led to the link up with local junior club Woking Cougars. The Cougars finish at 17 years old and the opportunity to have young local players coming up through the ranks is something the Knaphill is very proud to pursue.

The 2013/14 season also offers the opportunity to play our local rivals Westfield at U18 level as they have moved divisions within the SYL to provide an opportunity for local bragging rights. After last years 5th place finish, the team has a challenge to improve on that and also last year’s disappointment in not reaching the Grant-McLellan Cup Final for the first time in three years. Looking at the pre-season games so far, Knaphill’s supporters will have a lot to be excited about when watching the U18’s.
