LECTURE SERIES: REASON, RELIGION, DEMOCRACYLECTURE 1: REASON Facilitator: David Wangler, Ph.D. Both Plato and Aristotle were pagan philosophers who thought that Reason was the trait that made humans, human. The questions that we will consider are these: Is it only reason that can know and respond to whatever is real and true? Is science rational thought at a very high level? Is some kind of highly rational trained intelligence the most important goal any modern society can aspire to or realize?

LECTURE 2: RELIGION Facilitator: David Wangler, Ph.D. There has never been a society without some religious component. Does this suggest the religion is as necessary to society as the Greeks thought reason was? Is it possible that religion and reason are two different but equal realms that provide understanding and integration for human societies?

Monday Jan 13 10:00 am - 11:30 am (1.5 hours) Price: $2 (Non-member $7)

LECTURE 3: DEMOCRACY Facilitator: David Wangler, Ph.D. If all religions operate as forms of restraint for all societies, will the majority of those who live in democracies, which are often accompanied by a capitalist form of economic organization, continue to choose restrictions which prevent them from either doing what they want or what they find to be pleasurable. St. Albert Seniors Association - 2020 Winter Program Guide 24

It all began in the basement of the community hall on Perron Street where the St. Albert Seniors Citizens Club met. A few years later on August 29, 1974, a sod turning ceremony put into motion the big move to Lions Park, the same location at which we are still today! In 1975, an old 1,600 square foot army barrack was towed over the frozen Sturgeon River, made possible by the works of the Town of St. Albert and the Women’s Auxiliary. On August 26, 1975, the Seniors Citizen Recreation Centre officially became incorporated! In the last 50 years, we have been known by many names. In 1988, our name changed to the St. Albert Lions Senior Citizen Centre, shortly after that in 1991, our name changed to the Senior Citizens Recreation Centre, in the early 2000s, St. Albert Senior Citizens Club became our name. In 2012, our name changed to the St. Albert 50+ Club, and finally in 2015, our name changed to the name we currently have: The St. Albert Seniors Association! With many of these name changes also came renovations and changes to our facility, with the most recent renovations in 2015!

The St. Albert Seniors Association has always been a place where community and friendships are founded. Over the years, we have received donations from people and organizations in our community which have helped us keep our doors open, and none of this would have been possible without the dedication of the thousands of people who have volunteered and supported the Association over the last 50 years. They have truly been a foundational piece to this ever growing puzzle!

This past August 28th, 2019, we kicked off our year long celebration with a beautiful dinner and dance! We were honored to have Nora Rouault, one of our founding members, join us for the evening. Since the kick-off we have hosted many events and activities around our 50th year, including our Member Appreciation Night, our baby naming contest and donation drive for the Ronald McDonald house and the St. Albert Community Village; a monthly toonie movie afternoon, and recently, our Seniors Got Talent Night! The celebrations continue! The following dates list a few highlighted events:
