• A red panda is small and raccoon-like, with copper colored fur and stripes on it’s tail.

• The red panda is endangered, with only an estimated 2,500 in living in the wild today.

• They live in the Himalayan mountains, and they spend most of their time in the trees.

• Females usually give birth in the summer, and their babies usually depend on the mother for four months.

• Red panda’s diet consists mainly of bamboo, and sometimes berries, small mammals, birds, and eggs.

• They are related to the giant panda

• Red pandas love bamboo. They are mostly vegetarian, and in addition to bamboo they love berries, blossoms, and lichen or moss.

• Red pandas reside in the forests of the Himalayas.

ConservationConservation

• Efforts are being made to save the red pandas from extinction. Due to their habitats being destroyed and people hunting them there are less and less of them all the time. The conservation efforts currently being used are various projects being taken on by nature groups. There is a law in place that makes it illegal to hunt them and they are being bred in captivity in an effort to keep their numbers up.

• The females raise them for four months.

• The females typically give birth in the spring or summer.

• They carry their young for 112-158 days and they have 1-4 babies at a time.
