Membership

Dues and Affiliation Dues for Nebraska FCCLA members are $13. This breaks down to $4 which is used for State dues and $9 for National dues. Our state participates in the Direct Affiliation program with National Headquarters. This means that your chapter affiliates with both the State and Nationals directly with National Headquarters Office. As a result, one form is completed and one check is submitted by each chapter. The online affiliation system can be accessed through the National FCCLA website by checking under the “Membership” tab. Questions about the affiliation system or procedures should be emailed to [email protected]. At the State Association, dues go to support a variety of things such as expenses incurred by the State Officer Team, State Peer Teams, Board of Directors, and District Advisers. The money also goes to support state projects, supplies, and publications as well as special events such as FCCLA Serves and tour opportunities at State Leadership Conference. Scholarships and STAR are supported by $1.00 of each member’s dues. At the National Association, dues are used to cover programs and publications including Teen Times, meetings such as National Cluster Meetings, National Leadership Conferences, and expenses for the Board of Directors and National Executive Council. Finally, National Dues also support the salaries for national staff members as well as the expenses of their travel to work in states, as well as office expenses.

BFF Recruitment When asked why students join FCCLA, what are the top two responses? Hands down it is “because my friend did” or “because someone told me to.” So, why not share FCCLA with those around you and make them your BFF?! BFF stands for Best FCCLA Friend and encourages members to recruit one person to share in their FCCLA journey as a member of the organization. This BFF becomes a mentor/mentee relationship that guides both students through the many programs, opportunities, and leadership development that FCCLA has to offer. Make the most of your time in FCCLA and have a BFF to share it with! All members who submit their information will be recognized at State Leadership Conference and will be entered to win an FCCLA prize pack!

Here are some strategies you might try!

Show an FCCLA recruitment video

Create a bulletin board display of the great things your membership does

Promote on chapter social media pages

Host a dance-a-thon

Coordinate dress-up days for FCCLA recruitment week

Host a membership movie night

Invite potential members to a kick-off scavenger hunt

Create locker signs for new FCCLA members

Display info and recruit at school events Host an FCCLA day for all FACS classes

12 | P a g e

Create a PSA about FCCLA

Offer free food or prizes at the first meeting to dues paying members

Invite a fun guest speaker to the first meeting

Award students who bring a BFF to the first meeting

Host a “Thank Goodness it’s FCCLA Friday” meeting

Competitive Events

Involvement in FCCLA’s Competitive Events offers members the opportunity to expand their leadership potential and develop skills for life necessary in families, communities and workplaces. Members can demonstrate family and consumer sciences skills, career skills, and interpersonal skills through a variety of competitive events including Skill Demonstration Events, STAR Events, and FCCLA Contests.

The following are the categories of different competitive events that are offered for 2017-18.

Skill Demonstration Events Skill Demonstration Events provide opportunities for members to demonstrate college and career-ready skills in Family and Consumer Sciences and related occupations. Competitions take place at National Cluster Meetings. For the 2017 National Cluster Meetings, the following events will be held:

Unknown at time of initial publication; check back for more details.

FCCLA Contests These events allow students to use creativity to express their FCCLA spirit. These contests take place twice each year and are posted on the National FCCLA website.

STAR Events STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation. There are four kinds of events:

Foundational: events, which build basic leadership and life skills, are for FCCLA members who want to get involved and improve themselves

Leadership: events provide an opportunity for leaders to gain recognition for their work in chapters

Career Preparation: events for students interested in a specific career area that require students to spend time building career specific skills and knowledge or to explore a specific career path

Online: events which students build an online project for evaluation Advisers and participants should always watch for updates on events that take place throughout the year. Complete guidelines and updates can be found on the Nebraska and National FCCLA websites as well as in the 2017-18 Competitive Events Guide.

Leadership Development Leadership development is more than just part of the mission for Nebraska FCCLA. It is a large part decision making that we go through when considering events, conferences, programming, and more. With a tagline of “The Ultimate Leadership Experience,” Nebraska FCCLA believes in building the leadership skills and experiences of its members.

Conferences and Events At every FCCLA conference, leadership development takes center stage. Whether it’s preparing a student for their role as a chapter officer at Fall Leadership Workshop or connecting students to unique program training at

14 | P a g e

State Leadership Conference, we work to provide diverse growth opportunities for every student. In addition, all conferences sponsored by Nebraska FCCLA have been cross walked to the Nebraska Career Readiness Standards which identifies what skills a student will gain be attending that event.

Leadership Roles

Students can also practice their leadership skills through a variety of leadership roles in FCCLA. This could include leading a committee at the local level or running for a position on the National Executive Council. Through these experiences students are tested and stretched to new levels while taking an active role in improving their family, school and community. For more information about leadership opportunities at the State and National level, visit Leadership Opportunities under Membership on the Nebraska FCCLA website.

A Day in Your Future

We are excited to implement this new program for our members for 2017-18! A Day in Your Future is a state-wide job shadow initiative to connect FCCLA members with family and consumer sciences occupations. The mission of our organization is to promote family and consumer sciences occupations and in the state of Nebraska, these occupations are in high demand across the state. What is a family and consumer sciences occupation? Here are just a few examples:

interior designer marketing and merchandising buyer designer FACS teacher dietitian marriage and family counselor textile research and development home furnishings designer property manager

food scientist infant educator mental health counselor chef early childhood teacher or care provider nutritionist social worker entrepreneur psychologist

Matches will be made on a competitive basis and will be made as close as possible to the specific career choice indicated as well as to the preferred geographical location. Applications are due electronically to the State Adviser by October 1.

Public Relations

Preparing Spotlights for Red Leader Red Leader is the newsletter published monthly for Nebraska FCCLA members. Chapters and encouraged to share Red Leader with nonmembers as well as stakeholders in their local chapters. In addition, chapters who wish may be featured in the newsletter if they submit information about the happenings in their local chapter. To be featured in Red Leader, chapters should submit their Spotlight to Nebraska FCCLA via our email at [email protected]. Spotlights should be titled and should be 100 words or less and provide a clear, concise description of what the chapter accomplished. If possible, chapters should include a picture of the FCCLA members taking part in the event.

Red Leader is published in the months of August-April. Spotlights submitted in any month will be featured in the following month’s newsletter. For example, if a Spotlight is submitted any time December 1-31, it will be featured in the January Red Leader.

15 | P a g e

Social Media

Chapters are highly encouraged to use social media platforms to engage members and stakeholders. Social media should be for more than just passing information; use it to open up communication about issues and program opportunities within the organization.

The following are just a few tips to help ensure your social media use is a positive and effective experience

Keep well educated about current platforms.

Follow the social media of organizations that support the same things as FCCLA or your school.

Engage your readers by asking questions, hosting online chats, and linking to outside resources.

Be consistent in your postings and the timeliness of those postings.

Members and advisers are also encouraged to follow Nebraska FCCLA on social media. All of the information about the different platforms we use is available on the Contact Information page of this Handbook.

Public Relations Award This year Nebraska FCCLA is pleased to offer again the Public Relations Award. This award is designed as a checklist to guide a chapter through some of the best practices in public relations efforts. It provides lots of ideas for extending outreach efforts through social media, public service announcements, written publications, and awareness efforts across the school and community. The complete application can be found on the Chapter Awards section of the website and is due March 1.

Kohl’s Cares: Associates in Action

As a non-profit committed to families and children, FCCLA is eligible to receive outstanding services and support from Kohl’s. Chapters and Districts that need volunteers can submit their information to the State Adviser. The minimum number of requested volunteers is 5 but if 5 volunteers contribute at least 3 hours of time, the State Association receives a donation from Kohl’s as well as providing needed volunteers for your event. Supporter Contribution Certificates Chapters are highly encouraged to recognize all of their contributors. Nebraska FCCLA has created a Certificate of Appreciation that can be personalized to include your chapter name and the business/partner name. Chapters are invited to personalize and print this certificate to create a unified network of contributor recognition throughout the state of Nebraska. To access this certificate, visit the Nebraska FCCLA website. If you do not have Publisher and would like a PDF created, contact the State Adviser.

Chapter Developer Awards Chapters who seek and receive donations to Nebraska FCCLA whether in the form of Circle of Friends memberships or through additional opportunities, will be automatically entered into a contest to win $100-$300 State Leadership Conference registration credit. In addition, the top three chapters will receive recognition at the Business and Recognition Session. The contest will run from August 1 - February 1.

Collecting Donations Nebraska FCCLA offers printed materials to assist your chapter in getting donations for Circle of Friends. Contact the State Adviser to order these materials at no cost to you.

When a business agrees to become a member of Circle of Friends, have them fill out the Circle of Friends Sponsorship form and collect the money or payment information.
