2008 Season Preview

Senior Satoshi Arai.

After a season with huge player turnover in 2007, fifth-year head coach Dwight Hornibrook has a roster with more stability in 2008. In fact, 18 players return to a team that posted an 11-7-1 overall record, cracked the NSCAA/adidas top 25 and advanced to the SUNYAC semifinals last season. Add a group of newcomers that’s a good mix of freshmen and transfers, and the Red Dragons have the ingredients to follow up with a productive campaign in 2008.

The Red Dragons have two excellent senior goalkeepers who will provide the team with quality

minutes throughout the season. Jack Carillo stepped into the lineup in 2007, his first with the program, and posted an 11-5-1 record with five shutouts and a 1.43 goals against average. Steve Axtell returns to the squad after missing all of 2007 due to injury. In 2006, Axtell started 15 games with three shutouts and a 1.59 GAA. Sophomore Patrick Pidgeon also returns to the squad in 2008.

The Red Dragons appear deep on defense with the return of four players who combined to start 56 games in 2007, as well as one other returnee and four newcomers. Senior Adam Jurcic appeared in all 19 games with 18 starts last season and was named the MVP of Rochester’s Flower City Classic. Junior Mike Jock moved to the back line and started 18 games as a sophomore. Sophomore Corey DeVille made an immediate impact last season, starting 16 games and collecting a pair of assists, while being named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team. Senior Satoshi Arai came on strong at the end of the season, earning four starts and a spot on the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team. Senior Eric Hankin saw action in three games in 2007.

Newcomers to the team on defense include senior Armin Oster, junior Emerson Caiza Zabala and freshmen Luke Wear and Brendan Wells. Oster, from Stuttgart, Germany, is in his first year with the program. Caiza Zabala was an all-region player at Tompkins-Cortland Community College. Wear was league MVP and an all-state player at John Jay-Cross River and Wells was a three-year starter and all-county selection at MacArthur.

Cortland’s midfield is loaded with experience with four players who earned nine or more starts

in 2007. Senior Peter Degere, who was one of just two players to start all 19 games last season, earned second team All-SUNYAC honors and recorded three assists. Senior Ayinde George earned 10 starts and saw action in 18 games and was second on the team in scoring with 11 points on four goals and three assists. Senior Kyle Stepanovsky finished third on the team in scoring with nine points on three goals and three assists, while starting 12 of the 19 games in which he played. Sophomore Patrick Meany, a third team All-SUNYAC selection, saw action in 14 games with nine starts and scored five points on two goals and an assist. Sophomore Steve Bartkowski played in 13 games with one start as a freshman and sophomore Ryan Strader

appeared in four games.

Sophomore Matt Kutzer, in his first year with the program, and freshmen Max Grant and E.J. Reutemann round out the midfield group. Kutzer played at the University at Albany in 2007, Grant was an all-conference forward at Great Neck South and Reutemann was a three-year member of powerful Shenendehowa.

With every other area of the field covered, there should be no shortage of goals from the forwards. Senior Bryan Patterson is the reigning SUNYAC Player of the Year and was a third team all-region selection in 2007. Patterson led the Red Dragons with 28 points, 14 goals and five game-winners last season. Senior Dave Jacques missed nearly half the season due to injury but still scored four goals in 10 games, with all of the tallies coming in his first five games. Sophomore Andrew Schwert

appeared in 17 games with three starts with his lone goal of the year being a game-winner. Junior Logan Keeney returns to the squad after missing 2007.

Two newcomers join the team up top. Junior Mark Gunsch scored 33 goals and assisted on 24 others in two seasons at Herkimer Community College, earning all-region and all-conference honors. Sophomore Jimmy Eichas comes to the Red Dragons after a year at Avon Old Farms Prep, where he was the team’s leading scorer, and a season at the University at Buffalo.

Senior Jack Carillo.

Senior Dave Jacques.

Senior Steve Axtell. Senior Ayinde George.

2007 Game-by-Game RecapCortland 1, Rochester 0(Aug. 31; Rochester, NY; Flower City Classic)Eric Reinhardt converted a penalty kick with a shot to the lower right side of the net early in the second half after a Rochester defender pulled down Bryan Patterson in the box. Jack Carillo made four saves, three in the second half, to record the shutout in his first Cortland start.

Cortland 1, St. John Fisher 0(Sep. 2; Rochester, NY; Flower City Classic)The Red Dragons captured the tournament title with the win versus the Cardinals. Dave Jacques scored the game’s lone goal in the seventh minute when he took a pass from Brad Pennypacker, dodged the St. John Fisher goalie who had charged off his goal line and deposited a 30-yard shot into the open goal. Defender Adam Jurcic was named the Most Valuable Player, and Jack Carillo made five saves.

Messiah 7, Cortland 0(Sep. 7; Grantham, PA; Falcon Classic)Nationally sixth-ranked and three-time defending national champion Messiah opened up a 4-0 lead at intermission and advanced to the championship game of its own Falcon Classic. Jack Carillo stopped four shots in 76 minutes before giving way to Greg Arnold, who made one save over the final 14 minutes.

Cortland 5, Goucher 3(Sep. 8; Grantham, PA; Falcon Classic)The Red Dragons rebounded with the wild win in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The game wasn’t decided until Dave Jacques scored his second goal of the game in the 90th minute, just four minutes after Goucher had pulled to within 4-3. Bryan Patterson netted a pair of goals for Cortland, and Kyle Stepanovsky scored his first goal as a Red Dragon.

Cortland 4, New Paltz 0(Sep. 15; Cortland, NY)Cortland opened up a 3-0 lead at the half in the SUNYAC opener for both teams and went on to a 4-0 win as four

different players found the back of the net. Ayinde George recorded a goal and an assist, Dave Jacques tallied his team-high fourth goal of the season and Adam Jurcic and Kyle Stepanovsky also scored. Jack Carillo made three saves in 79 minutes, and Greg Arnold did not need to stop a shot in the final 11 minutes.

Cortland 1, ithaca 0(Sep. 18; Cortland, NY)Kyle Stepanovsky assisted Bryan Patterson’s goal in the 77th minute as the Red Dragons defeated 17th-ranked Ithaca. Patterson settled a header from Stepanovsky in the box, turned and beat the Ithaca goalie one-on-one for his third goal of the season. Jack Carillo registered one save to earn the shutout.

Cortland 4, SuNYiT 1(Sep. 21; Cortland, NY)Four different players scored goals as the Red Dragons broke open a 1-1 game at intermission with three unanswered goals in the second half. Shinya Hori, Andrew Schwert and Patrick Meany each scored his first goal as a Red Dragon and Bryan Patterson scored his fourth of the season. Jack Carillo turned aside three shots to earn the win in goal.

Cortland 6, Morrisville St. 1(Sep. 22; Cortland, NY)Bryan Patterson scored three straight goals as Cortland improved to 7-1 for the first time since the 1989 season. The Mustangs grabbed the lead in the seventh minute on a free kick, but the Red Dragons closed the first half with three goals, including a pair by Patterson. Patterson, Charlie Dickinson and Eric Reinhardt each scored in the second half.

Plattsburgh 2, Cortland 0(Sep. 28; Plattsburgh, NY)The Cardinals netted what proved to be the game-winner just nine seconds before halftime and added an insurance goal in the 59th minute to end Cortland’s five-game winning streak. Jack Carillo stopped four shots for the Red Dragons, who suffered their first SUNYAC loss of the season.

Cortland 2, Potsdam 1(Sep. 29; Potsdam, NY)Bryan Patterson netted a pair of unassisted goals less than nine minutes into the game and Cortland held on for the victory, keeping the Bears winless in conference action. Buffalo St. 2, Cortland 1(Oct. 5; Buffalo, NY)The Red Dragons lost to the Bengals for the first time since the 1998 season. Cortland fell behind 2-0 before Bryan Patterson scored on a header in the 77th minute off Corey DeVille’s free kick. Greg Arnold made five saves in his first career start as a Red Dragon.

Fredonia St. 2, Cortland 1(Oct. 6; Fredonia, NY)The Blue Devils erased a 1-0 lead with two second-half goals, including the game-winner with less than five minutes in regulation. Bryan Patterson gave Cortland a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute with his team-high 11th goal of the season, assisted by Lasse Grosz. Jack Carillo registered eight saves in goal.

Brockport 2, Cortland 0(Oct. 12; Cortland, NY)The Golden Eagles scored in the second minute and added an insurance goal on a loose ball in the 75th minute to hand Cortland its third straight loss, dropping the Red Dragons to 8-5 overall and 4-4 in the SUNYAC. Cortland’s best chance to score came in the 30th minute, but Dan Dunn’s 18-yard shot was denied by the Brockport goalie at the left post. Greg Arnold made four saves.

Cortland 1, Geneseo 0 (2OT)(Oct. 13; Cortland, NY)Sean Malone scored with 2:16 remaining in the second overtime to lift Cortland to the win in a key SUNYAC matchup. Moments after Geneseo put an open shot over the crossbar, Peter Degere possessed the ball on the right side and sent a cross to the left post where Malone buried a clean header for his first goal of the season. Jack Carillo earned the shutout with two saves.

Cortland 3, Oswego 2 (OT)(Oct. 17; Oswego, NY)The Red Dragons rallied from a late 2-0 deficit in the second half and clinched a SUNYAC playoff berth with the overtime win. The Lakers seemed in control of the game until Ayinde George scored in the 80th minute to pull Cortland to within 2-1 and Patrick Meany sent the game to overtime in the 87th minute. Bryan Patterson then volleyed in George’s cross just 21 seconds into the extra time for the game-winner.

Oneonta 2, Cortland 1(Oct. 20; Oneonta, NY)Despite the setback, the Red Dragons clinched the fourth seed in the SUNYAC playoffs with a 6-5 league mark. Oneonta scored goals in the 41st and 49th minutes before Eric Reinhardt set up Bryan Patterson’s team-best 13th goal of the season in the 57th minute. Cortland 2, Vassar 0(Oct. 27; Cortland, NY)The Red Dragons closed their regular season with the win in the first-ever meeting between Cortland and Vassar. Bryan Patterson and Ayinde George scored goals less than two minutes apart early in the second half on shots from 24 and 20 yards out, respectively. Jack Carillo posted his fourth shutout of the season with four saves.

Cortland 3, Buffalo St. 3 (2OT; Cortland advances on PKs)(Oct. 30; Cortland, NY; SuNYAC Quarterfinals)After the teams played to a 3-3 tie through 110 minutes, Bryan Patterson’s converted penalty kick in a shootout lifted the Red Dragons past the Bengals and into the conference semifinals. Cortland had taken a 3-2 lead in the 87th minute on an “own goal,” but Buffalo St. forced overtime with a score in the 89th minute. Eric Reinhardt and Ayinde George netted Cortland’s other scores.

Fredonia St. 1, Cortland 0(Nov. 2; Oneonta, NY; SuNYAC Semifinals)The top-seeded Blue Devils scored the game’s only goal with 1:11 left in regulation and ended Cortland’s season at 11-7-1. After an errant Red Dragon kick, a Fredonia St. player controlled the ball near midfield and sent a long shot that bounced into the corner of the goal for the game-winner. About SuNY CortlandLocated atop one of the rolling hills in central New York’s “City of Seven Valleys,” the State University of New York College at Cortland was founded in 1868 as the Cortland Normal School, which included among its earliest students inventor and industrialist Elmer A. Sperry of Sperry-Rand Corp. fame.

Over the decades, the campus expanded and in 1941, by an act of legislature and the Board of Regents, the institution officially became a four-year college providing courses leading to the bachelor’s degree. In 1948, Cortland was a founding member of the State University of New York. Today, approximately 7,500 students are pursuing degrees within the College’s three academic divisions — arts and sciences, professional studies and the school of education. Twenty-three departments with a faculty of more than 400 offer the SUNY Cortland student body 70 majors and 44 minors from which to choose. The College’s main campus covers 191 acres and includes 31 traditional and modern buildings. Fifteen of these structures are residence halls providing on-campus housing for approximately 3,000 students. Cortland also operates its Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks, the Hoxie Gorge Nature Preserve outside Cortland, and the Brauer Education Center on the Helderberg Escarpment near Albany. At Cortland, athletics are viewed as having an important role in the educational mission of the College. During the fall, winter and spring seasons, Cortland participates in 25 intercollegiate sports — 14 women’s and 11 men’s — in an attempt to provide a broad program which meets the needs, interests and abilities of its students.

The Cortland athletic program placed ninth nationally out of approximately 430 colleges and universities in the 2007-08 all-sport United States Sports Academy Directors’ Cup Division III standings. The award was formerly known as the Sears Directors’ Cup from 1995-2002 and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Directors’ Cup in the 2002-03 school year. Cortland is the only New York school and

one of only six nationwide to finish in the top 20 each of the last 13 years. Since 1989, the Red Dragons have captured 13 NCAA Division III team titles.

The College offers its student-athletes excellent athletic facilities. The newly-constructed on -campus stadium features two artificial turf fields. One field seats 6,500 spectators, the other 1,500. The Cortland football, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s track and field teams are among those who utilize the facility, which the New York Times called “...a new stadium worthy of a major university power.”

The Bessie L. Park Physical Education and Recreation Center, opened in 1973, features the Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium with a 3,500 seating capacity; the Olympic-sized Harriet Holsten swimming pool with gallery seating for 1,500; the Alumni Ice Arena, a facility which can accommodate 2,500 spectators; a 500-seat gymnastics arena, racquetball and squash courts, a wrestling room, modern athletic training facilities and the state-of-the-art Francis Woods Fitness Facility.

Nearby Clayton R. Lusk Field House, with its tartan-textured surface, is home for the indoor track teams, varsity practice sessions and recreational activities. Cortland’s soccer teams play on T. Fred “Prof” Holloway Field, which has lights for night contests and newly installed bleachers. The College also has 22 outdoor tennis courts and two outdoor basketball courts and boasts Robert H. Wallace Field (baseball) and Dragon Field (softball) as part of its 51 acres of athletic fields.
