How We’re Awesome This Month: 02 ISSUE October 2015 Hill College was recently selected to receive a grant from the George G. and Alva Hudson Smith Foundation. The college received $6,152 to help fund emergency preparedness kits for the Incident Command Team, campus buildings, the Library and residence halls! Congratulations to John Versluis, Lizza Trenkle and Preston McReynolds! Vice President of External Affairs Jessyca Brown was selected as a member of the Leadership Greater Hillsboro program for 2015-2016. Leadership Greater Hillsboro is a program for Hillsboro community members and is designed to develop community leaders for today and tomorrow. Admission to the Leadership Hillsboro class is one of the Hillsboro Community’s top honors. It is a rigorous academic and hands- on learning program focused around leadership development at the personal, organizational and community levels. The participants work together as a group, visiting key elements of both the local and state infrastructure. On each program day, participants will interact with the entire class, speakers and guests. By the end of the program, participants will develop a cohesive overview of how educational, social service and business systems operate on both the city and state level. Congratulations, Jessyca! The Glen Rose Cosmetology department recently attended the Somervell County Cancer Support Group’s fundraiser, “A Missless Beauty Pageant,” where students applied makeup and wigs to pageant participants. All proceeds from the contest benefited the local cancer support group that assists local cancer patients by helping supply medicine and gas through local businesses as well as offering support and friendship during the process. Good job, Glen Rose Cosmetology! Darlene Herring, English Adjunct Instructor, was recently published in the book, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Thanks to My Mom! Herring began teaching English courses online for Hill College after retiring from public school teaching. She said she loves the art of storytelling and encourages her students to write from the heart. Congratulations, Darlene! It is that time of year again as Hill College is getting ready for its annual “Holiday on the Hill.” The event this year will be Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Student Center Gym. Come celebrate the season with us and see what goodies are offered by Hill College employees and other local artisans! Biology II and Nutrition students recently partnered with Irving Elementary (Cleburne ISD) to build a school garden. Together the college and elementary students built six raised bed gardens from scratch, and ended the three- hour lab period with a fully-planted fall garden. This is required for Biology II, and bonus for Nutrition students. This is the fifth school garden Hill College students have built with CISD schools. WTG Dr. Lori Rose! TECH BYTESWhat is a hashtag? We hear the term hashtag all the time in our daily lives now, but do you know what it means? In the simplest term, a hashtag is a label for content and it looks like the pound sign (#). It is used to help others who are interested in a certain topic quickly find content on that same topic, because it works as a link. Hashtags can’t have spaces or special characters, just letters. For example, search #HillCollege on twitter.com and the site will bring up all of the tweets that have #HillCollege in them. You can use hashtags on all of the major social media platforms, including: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+ and Pinterest. There are no limits to what you can hashtag! #TryItNow

Performing Arts

Imagine yourself in the idyllic French countryside in the 1930s. Sometime before dark, a gypsy caravan sets up camp in a field outside of town, luring the locals out for an evening’s fun. The wanderers travel with a film projector, pointing it at the side of a barn. As the images flicker to life beneath the stars, gypsy musicians play their guitars and fiddles, matching every movement on the screen with characteristic virtuosity, passion and humor. Reviving this lost entertainment, The Hot Club of San Francisco presents Cinema Vivant, an evening of vintage silent films accompanied by live gypsy swing on Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. You don’t want to miss it!
