Why is Recycling important?

• Recycling reduces the risk to wildlife habitatsIt reduces the need for mining metals, cutting trees, and drilling for oil.

• It saves energy. It takes 95% LESS energy to make an Aluminum can from recycled materials than from new raw materials.

• Reduces harm to humans, animals, and the climate.Garbage left to decompose in landfills or burned in incinerators can produce harmful gases.

• Recycling saves money. It costs less to recycle than to pay the fees for dumping garbage in a landfill or incinerator

• Recycling creates jobs.Transporting, sorting, re-processing, and manufacturing recycled materials into new products are part of the new green economy.

Why can’t you put those items in recycling?

• Once you place any non-recyclables in the recycling bin, it contaminates the entire lot and causes it to be disposed of as trash.

• Keep trash bags, Styrofoam and other non-recyclable items out of the recycle bins to prevent this.

Does Franklin Pierce Recycle?

Page 10: Recycling at Franklin Pierce University

Recycling at FPU

• Franklin Pierce does in fact recycle!

• Franklin Pierce University has teamed up with MonadnockDisposal services to offer single-stream recycling.

• This allows recycling to be done without having to sort through all of the recyclables.

• Casella’s zero-sort recycling process takes care of the rest.

But… I saw the same truck take Trash and Recyclables

• There are two vehicles designated for Trash and for Recyclable materials…sometimes both will be collected in the same truck.

But…

• At the waste processing center… They have the capacity to sort and separate trash from recyclables!

Then why do we collect/sort recyclables on campus if WM can sort there?

• It does cost more for the University and Waste Management to spend the extra time and work to sort through the combined mix of waste and recyclables.

Then why do they do it?

• If collection bins are overflowing, if weather is bad or time is restricting, both will be picked up due to time constraints and need.

Where Can you dispose of recyclables?

• Every administrative, recreational, and academic building on campus is accompanied by both trash & recycle bins

• Students should take all recyclables to the recycle dumpsters and bins

• Electronics should be brought to the facilities warehouse• Batteries to select bins outside of the IT help desk, lounge

area in Marcucella hall, and the foyer in Edgewood hall.• CLEAN Clothing and shoes should be placed in the planet

aid bin.• Baking Commodities will recycle cooking oil into biofuels.
