"Why are we saying the Apostles' Creed in Lent and Easter instead of the Nicene Creed?”

The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Western Church as a series of questions for those to be baptized by the early 200’s, while the Nicene Creed was developing in the Eastern Church. These are the questions heard at the Easter Vigil, and which we repeated at the Easter Sunday liturgies, such as: "Do you believe in God the, Father Almighty?" with the response: "Yes." The form of this creed which we pray at the beginning of the Rosary was well established in the Roman Church by the 10th c. So, during Lent and Easter—as we accompany those to be received into the Church through Baptism—we have the option to return to one of the most ancient and familiar the Roman Church's creed. The Apostles' Creed has a beautiful simplicity and brevity to it, and as we pray it throughout the Easter Season we bind ourselves to the early Christian community in Rome, as they welcomed the newly baptized into communion.

Stewardship of Treasure

The Catholicism Project is “the most important media project in the history of the Catholic Church in America,” says George Weigel, biographer of St. John Paul II. Journey with Bishop Robert Barron as he illustrates the truth, goodness, and beauty of Catholicism, which claims more than one billion of the earth’s people.

Discover the full meaning of the faith Tuesday evenings, 6:30pm, starting May 16, in the Donahue Center Cafeteria. Program ends July 25; there is no cost to attend. For questions, contact Dcn. Vince at 512-576-4788.

Encyclical Study: Early in his pontificate, Pope Francis published his first encyclical, Lumen Fidei (Light of Faith). The Church, especially in the West, is hungry for a renewal of the Catholic Faith, and Lumen Fidei is an important contribution to the conversation going on throughout the world. We will read and study this encyclical over 6 weeks on Wednesday evenings, at 6:30pm, starting May 17, in the Donahue Center Cafeteria; ending June 21. No cost to attend. Contact Dcn. Vince at 512-576-4788, for questions.

Special Collection May 14: The bishops of the U.S. approved a special, one-time second collection for the Trinity Dome of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. Your prayerful and financial support will not only adorn this “Crowning Jewel” and complete Mary’s Shrine, but will also leave a lasting legacy for generations to come in this living monument to our Catholic faith and heritage that is America’s Catholic Church.

Dear Cathedral Parishioners,

The Saint Mary Cathedral Gala is just six days away! We are planning a wonderful evening for you to enjoy and celebrate the school’s sesquicentennial. We are blessed with the distinction of being the oldest school in the diocese. This blessing is possible because of the many generations of generous parishioners. I pray you will be able to join us on

Saturday, May 13, at the JW Marriott. We will provide a free shuttle service to/from the Cathedral/JW Marriott that evening. The Gala will be our closing celebration for the 150th year of the school. Both Bishop Joe Vásquez and Bishop Daniel Garcia will be present. Please join our bishops, clergy, and fellow parishioners who value and support Catholic education for this evening of celebration! There's still time to purchase tickets at https://smcaustin.ejoinme.org/MyEvents/CathedralGala2017.

Please contact Esme Hoang at [email protected] for more information. We truly

appreciate your continued support.

“Led by the Spirit for Mission,” is the title of the message that Pope Francis offers for this 54th World Day of Prayer for Vocations, which the Vatican set for today, May 7. In it he says that “commitment to mission is not something added on to the Christian life as a kind of decoration, but is instead an essential element of faith itself. A relationship with the Lord,” he adds, “entails being sent out into the world as prophets of his word and witnesses of his love.” (from www.usccb.org)

World Day of Prayer for Vocations

Prayer for Vocations God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as priests, deacons, and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit to help others to respond generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth and young adults. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Pray every day for peace. Let’s remember to heed the message of Our Lady of Fatima to pray the Rosary every day

for peace. 2017 is the 100-year anniver-sary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima. We can pray both individually and especially together; for as Jesus said, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Mateo 18:20)
