RECTOR’S WELCOME

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to Metropolitan University Prague, a  leading centre of academic excellence in Czechia. Throughout these pages you will find vital information regarding the specific focuses and mantras, staff, prospects, and programmes adopted by our university since its establishment in 2001. It was then that we decided to become a school for the world and ensured that MUP’s international profile, its partnerships, student body, and faculty, truly reflect the interconnected world we live in – a fact highlighted by the body of our students who hail from more than 70 countries.

MUP provides education according to the highest academic standards to almost 4 000 students. Our strengths arise from establishing and maintaining the balance between first-class instruction and top-quality centres for advanced research in the fields of International Relations, Security Studies, European Studies, Political Science, Humanities, Media Studies, International Business, Asian Studies, Anglophone Studies, Public Administration, Tourism, and others. In these areas, our university offers one of the broadest spectrums of courses available at any Czech university at Bachelor’s (Bc.), Master’s (Mgr., Ing.), and Doctoral (PhDr., Ph.D.) levels. In addition, MUP promotes the School without Barriers programme which allows young people with physical disabilities to pursue their academic goals free of charge.

I thank you for taking the time to explore Metropolitan University Prague and look forward to seeing you here as a member of our energetic and diverse academic community in the heart of Europe.

prof. PhDr. Michal Klíma, M.A., CSc.

Metropolitan University Prague first opened its doors to students in 2001. Since then, more than 15 500 graduates of Bachelor’s Degree programmes, Master’s Degree programmes and Ph.D. programmes passed through MUP doors.

InternatIonal CooperatIonMetropolitan University Prague has become an academic centre sought by students from all over the world. In fact, it was the international dimension in particular that catapulted MUP to the first place among private universities in Czechia. This success is indicated by the steadily growing number of partner universities all over the world, the student body that includes 70 nationalities, the growing Erasmus+ programme, a wide variety of study stays offered for MUP students, traineeships for both MUP students and graduates, and last but not least, by the Double Degree programmes that permit MUP students to study at MUP partner universities abroad for one year and achieve a diploma from both universities when they complete their studies.

researCh and developmentMUP currently provides education to almost 4 000 students. In addition to the high standard of academic instruction, MUP also offers its students a chance to participate in various additional programmes under the auspices of individual Departments or Research Centres. Such activities include particularly international conferences and roundtables with leading Czech and internationally acclaimed experts.

sChool wIthout BarrIersThe activities of Metropolitan University Prague also highlight social responsibility. Since 2003, MUP has been implementing a social programme called School without Barriers for students with physical disabilities, for which it has received several awards. Within the scope of this programme, students receive a bursary in the amount of 90% of tuition fees and they study in barrier-free buildings. This programme allows students to reach their academic goals more freely and find suitable professional opportunities on the job market.

The Department was established in 2007, providing Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree programmes in Anglophone Studies, for both full-time and part-time students. Anglophone Studies is an interdisciplinary field of study, based on the fact that so much of our world has been shaped by English-speaking societies and culture. This process of influence continues with greater and greater intensity especially via the power of the United States and the English language as the global lingua franca of politics, the media and business. These influences are as rich and diverse as the Anglophone world itself, ranging from parliamentry democracy and the plays of Shakespeare, to organized sport and Hollywood movies. Anglophone influence is an inescapable reality – even here in Central Europe; that is why our programme exists. A degree in Anglophone Studies at Metropolitan University Prague offers a unique exploration of the English speaking world – its history, culture and political systems – through the medium of English. It is the only programme of its type in Czechia.

what we offerThe main focus of the study programme is, as its name suggests, the history, literature, and culture of English-speaking countries, with particular focus on current issues in international relations, the political and social development of the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, and English-speaking countries in Asia and Africa.

The Department of Anglophone Studies is one of the most diverse in the university, in terms of background and specialisations of teaching staff. The staff include native speakers as well as Czech experts, who have studied and taught all over Europe, in Canada and the USA. We have expertise in variety of disciplines such as linguistics, territorial studies, political science, culture or literature.

The Department of Anglophone Studies is committed to providing its students with an educational experience that equips them with the knowledge, analytical skills, academic ethics, and multicultural perspectives necessary to become competent and confident scholars and to prepare them for employment in a globalised world. Our wide-ranging programme reflects the department’s mission to provide a well-rounded education, and the diverse research and teaching interests of our teaching faculty.

Students and staff of the Department of Anglophone Studies alike benefit from the department’s comparatively small size, which allows it to provide individual mentoring and helps encourage an intimate and lively learning atmosphere – important aspects of student development that are not possible in many larger departments.

The Department of International Business aims to provide high-quality education in the area of international trade and business. Furthermore, the curriculum of this Department underscores the importance of understanding the basic issues in macroeconomics (international trade) and microeconomics (international business).

what we offerThe Department of International Business offers a Bachelor’s Degree programme in International Business (taught in both English and Czech) and a Master’s Degree programme in Regional studies and International Business (taught in both English and Czech). The Bachelor’s Degree programme trains students in both the theoretical subjects (i.e. Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Law, World Economy, etc.) and the more practically oriented subjects (such as International Marketing, International Management, Market Analysis, International Finance, etc.). The Master’s Degree programme further improves the students’ theoretical knowledge and analytical skills and emphasises the differences in regional development within the global economy, with special regard to developing and other emerging countries.

The Department also focuses on research and further educational and training activities for students, on research in new theories of international trade, arising issues of current international monetary system (with special emphasis on the common European currency), and variety of economic issues concerning the rapid increase of developing countries in the global business. Last but not least, it provides an analysis of both Czech and European foreign trade.

In 2012, the Department initiated the foundation of a students’ platform called MUP Impact. Its aim is to endorse students’ interest in social entrepreneurship and help them launch their own business.

By the same token, the Department regularly organizes lectures and workshops with business or industry leaders, and international conferences, and in 2011, it became a member of the UNCTAD Virtual Institute, a global platform for universities and research institutions in the field of international trade.

BaChelor’s degree study programmeThe Bachelor’s Degree study programme of International Business offers its students high-quality education in the relevant area. Furthermore, the curriculum of this programme underscores the importance of understanding the basic issues in macroeconomics, microeconomics, accounting, and statistics.

The study programme provides students with knowledge that will allow them to understand major concepts of world economic systems, financial markets, and commercial law. Subsequently, students are presented with the opportunity to acquire deeper expert knowledge necessary for the planning and implementation of international business operations and transactions on behalf of entrepreneurial subjects, as well as specific knowledge of local and international marketing and management.

The structure of the Bachelor’s Degree programme is designed to provide students with academic grounds for the follow-up Master’s Degree study programme of Regional Studies and International Business.

With respect to the importance of foreign languages in the international sphere, intensive foreign language courses form an integral part of the curriculum. In addition to the English language, students are required to select another foreign language during the course of their study (French, German, Russian, Spanish or, as the case may be, Czech). As well as practical language, the foreign language courses focus on specialised vocabulary relevant to the subject of study, reading comprehension of specialist texts, and academic writing.

As a free-choice option, the curriculum includes practical training in international organisations and institutions or, as the case may be, Czech or international companies. Students may also take part in work placement programmes abroad within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme. Throughout their studies, students may benefit from state-of-the-art teaching methods, individual consultations, and access to electronic databases and educational materials (core course materials).

REgiOnaL STUdiES and inTERnaTiOnaL bUSinESS

master’s degree study programmeThe Master‘s Degree study programme in Regional Studies and International Business is a two-year programme (4 semesters) designed as a follow-up programme to MUP Bachelor‘s Degree programme in International Business. However, graduates of other study programmes, mainly programmes focusing on business or economics, are welcome. Others will be assisted by the faculty members (special courses have been prepared for this purpose, e.g. Introduction to Statistics) to ensure that they are on par with their classmates.

The Master‘s Degree study programme provides students with an opportunity to expand their theoretical and practical knowledge of international business, particularly in the area of statistical data expertise, or international law (including intellectual property law). Additionally, students get a chance to deepen their knowledge in regional studies (Europe, Asia, Africa, and America). The graduates will be ready for careers not only in (international) business but, for instance, as data analysts. They will be entitled to use the Master title “Ing.” placed before the name.

The Department of International Relations and European Studies (IRES) aims to create a unique academic environment that is friendly and inspirational for both students and teachers. IRES practices what it preaches and takes pride in its diversity as, quite literally, people from all over the whole world gather in Prague - the heart of Europe - to contribute to our classroom environment. Our emphasis is based on quality and an individual approach. The doors of the Department are always open and we draw on the best of both Anglo-American and Czech traditions of university education, merging them into a challenging programme, unique in Central Europe.

what we offerIn the Bachelor’s Degree programme, students receive a well-rounded education and IRES sets them on the path to independent research in a professional and encouraging environment. The Master’s Degree programme explores advanced topics in international relations and European studies while mastering skills related to researching, essay and report writing, public speaking and communication in advanced English. The Ph.D. programme offers a comprehensive theoretical, methodological, and empirical treatment of the relevant issues in order to ensure that the accomplishments of its graduates reach a level comparable to leading universities around the world.

IRES students are encouraged to specialise in their particular interests. Free choice courses deal with diverse topics, such as the international politics of the environment, conflicts in the Middle East , the international politics of Latin America and varieties of terrorism; and the Department provides a platform for two research centres: the Ibero-American Centre and the Centre for Middle Eastern Studies, both of which hold numerous conferences, specialised seminars, and roundtables every year, and students actively participate in support of these units. At IRES, both teachers and students come together, each person bringing their own experiences and ideas, to build a unique scholarly community.

BaChelor’s degree study programmeThe Bachelor’s Degree programme offered by the Department of International Relations and European Studies is an entry-level programme intended to offer students an insight into a multidisciplinary field of study from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. Students receive a well-rounded education and IRES sets them on the path to independent research in a professional and encouraging environment.

The IRES Bachelor’s Degree study programme is taught over three academic years (six semesters), and it is concluded by the submission and defence of a Bachelor’s Dissertation written under the supervision of one of our faculty members, and by completion of an oral Final State Examination. During this period, students are obliged to take all the allotted ”compulsory” courses, and they have the opportunity to specialise in certain areas (of their interest) by taking the “free choice” courses offered each semester. Additionally, MUP offers its students language courses (Czech, French, German, Russian, and Spanish) at various proficiency levels to complement their overall studies.

The foundation of the Master’s Degree Programme of Asian Studies at Metropolitan University Prague reflects the rising geopolitical, security and economic significance of Asia and its specific (sub)regions at the beginning of the 21st century. The programme, fostered by the Department of Asian Studies, aims to provide students with complex knowledge of the region encompassing geographical, cultural, historical, ethnic, religious and language aspects, which would result in their more profound understanding of individual states’ societies and their mutual relations, not only within the region but also outside its borders.

A salient component of the study plan promoting a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to Asia comprises free choice courses in Asian Languages (Chinese or Japanese). The Department activities as well as the classwork are supported and enriched by research activities, the objective of which is to promote academic knowledge focused on current issues and problems in the Asia-Pacific Region and the subsequent dissemination of research results via professional workshops, international conferences, guest lectures and round tables organised in cooperation with a wide array of international experts and specialists on Asia.

what we offer

The study programme of Asian Studies is divided into several interrelated blocks. At the core, there are subjects which the students are expected to master, especially the interdisciplinary theories and practice of international relations, political and cultural studies (esp. postcolonial theories). Subsequently, the students choose from individual territorial courses. Attention is devoted to countries of East Asia (China, Japan, Korea), South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) and Southeast Asia in an overview.

BaChelor’s degree study programmeThe programme focuses on international relations on general level but also on important countries and regions of Europe and other parts of the world. It also addresses world power centres and emphasises understanding of basic issues in the European integration process and foreign affairs policy of not only Czechia (and Czechoslovakia) but also world powers. Due to its specialisation in Asian Studies, the programme also offers a deeper insight into territorial aspects of the study of international relationships with emphasis on the Asian region.

master’s degree study programmeGraduates of our Master’s Degree Programme are expected to acquire expert knowledge of a specific territory (state), as well as excellent general knowledge of political, cultural, social, historical and economic aspects of Asia as a whole. As a result, they can find employment in a wide array of fields and institutions, such as public administration, diplomacy, international trade, international institutions and organizations, media, Czech and international nonprofit and nongovernmental organisations, tourism, academia and research.

The Master’s Degree Asian Studies Programme is taught in the Czech language.

dEpaRTMEnT Of fOREign LangUagES

The Department of Foreign Languages was established in 2008 in order to offer foreign language instruction for students of non-philological specialisations taught at Metropolitan University Prague. The Department of Foreign Languages aims to put MUP on the map as a centre for internationally recognised Cambridge ESOL exams. By participating in European educational programmes, the Department cooperates with prestigious institutions from abroad and supports internationalisation and multiculturalism. The Department focuses on research in the field of linguistics and liguodidactics (foreign language teaching), and it organises courses of English, German, French, Spanish, Russian, and Czech for foreigners.

what we offerThe main target group of our foreign language instruction are Bachelor’s Degree students who need to master foreign languages for their future education and employment prospects. Each student is assigned to a language group corresponding to their current language skills based on the result of a placement test. After completing their studies, each graduate receives a Diploma Supplement stating (among other things) the achieved language level in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. With special regard to English teaching, all students have the opportunity to take an internationally recognised exam.

Additionally, students from different programmes, e.g. the Master’s Degree study programmes, have an opportunity to study foreign languages as optional courses. Apart from offering language tuition to MUP students, the Department also provides courses for the general public and one-year intensive language courses that prepare students for their further academic path.

All the teachers from the Department of Foreign Languages are highly professional language tutors who pay special attention to the students’ development of functional communication skills and competencies in working with scholarly texts. All language classrooms are equipped with modern multimedia technology and MUP also has two professional audio-visual studios available. Individual needs of students are taken into account, and part-time students have an opportunity to use the Moodle e-learning system.

The Department of Media Studies, founded in 2011, focuses on developing the curricula of the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral Degree study programme of Media Studies while emphasising research activities in the field of media studies and media communication. Media studies is an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary field which involves a vast variety of potential conceptual and methodological approaches, for instance, the dominant perspective of sociology, anthropology, etc.

what we offerWith respect to the interdisciplinary nature of the field and the tradition of Czech media studies, the Department of Media Studies at MUP focuses on developing media studies with an emphasis on the cultural dimension of media communication and on applied media studies, particularly the development of media literacy and media education. From the very beginning, the Department has covered the whole scale of both mass and network-mediated communication and its cultural dimension – mostly in diachronic, historical perspective. On the list of courses offered to students in Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree study programmes, the courses on media development (history of the mass media) are of crucial importance, as well as courses on social theory of media, media and culture, and media semiotics.

Our Doctoral Degree study programme focuses on investigating the mutual relationship between the media and culture, together with the history of media communication approached from diachronic and synchronic perspectives. At the same time, the programme does not disregard additional areas, such as, for instance, the mutual relationship between the media and politics as well as applied media studies, with an emphasis on media literacy and media education.
