STAFF UPDATE
I am very pleased to announce that beginning January 1, 2010, Jessica Nelson will join the All Saints’ staff as Choirmaster, Organist and my assistant for music and liturgy. I have no doubt that Jessica will hit the ground running at the first of the year. Please join me in welcoming Jessica home!
While a music major at Millsaps College, where she concentrated her studies in piano performance, Jessica was elected to ODK and selected as the Sweat Performance Fellow. While studying in Jackson, she also gained valuable experience through work as the Assistant Conductor of the Mississippi Girlchoir, as the Assistant to the Director of Worship Arts at Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church and study with a variety of piano, organ and conducting teachers and mentors.
Jessica continued her education at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. While enrolled at Seabury, she served as Organ Scholar at the Charles Palmerston Anderson Chapel of St. John the Divine. In 2008, Jessica was recognized by the Hymn Society of the United States and Canada as a Lovelace Scholar. Jessica focused her studies at Seabury in Church Music and Liturgy and in May of 2009 she earned a Master’s Degree in Theological Studies. She also received the 2009 Seabury-Western Music Prize.
Jessica brings a strong work ethic to this position and has many creative ideas about seamlessly integrating music into our liturgical life. Jessica and I have begun to plot and plan different ways that All Saints’ already excellent music program and offerings might be enhanced and strengthened. She and I welcome your ideas, input, support and active involvement in the music program. Fr. Paul +

The EYC took a trip to beautiful Sewanee. . . By Mary Langford
The EYC took a trip to beautiful Sewanee, Tennessee, November 20-24, 2009. Madeline Alvis, Jace King, Isabel Gray, and Mary Langford were the youth, and Father Paul, Bob Moore, and Sally Gray were our adult chaperones. After van trouble in Huntsville, we made our way up the mountain.
The first night, Friday, we drove to the War Memorial Cross around midnight. Although we were captivated by its beauty, we headed back to our home to be prepared for the next day’s activities. We lodged at the youth building at Otey Parish, an Episcopal Church on the mountain.
Saturday morning we woke up and began our day of touring the campus. We visited All Saints’ Chapel, the School of Theology, and many of Sewanee’s few restaurants. Also that morning, we put up a Christmas tree and decorated a bulletin board for our host parish. That night we attended the play “Crimes of the Heart,” written by Beth Henley, a native of Jackson.
Sunday brought as many new adventures. We went to church at Otey Parish and then at All Saints’ Chapel. Though the services were different, we liked them both for different reasons. That afternoon, we teamed up with Otey Parish’s youth group, Fire on the Mountain, and delivered cookies to Sewanee’s house-ridden community. We heard many interesting stories and had a great time. “I enjoyed it, and you could see the joy in all of the faces of those we visited,” said Jace. Sunday night we went to eat pizza at Ms. Betty’s, the Fire on the Mountain director’s, home.
We awoke early on Monday morning in order to travel an hour away to Stone Door. Here, we rappelled off a 180-foot cliff. Madeline said that rappelling was her favorite part of the trip. Monday afternoon we went to the bookstore, and that night we went to dinner and began packing up.
Tuesday morning we said goodbye to Sewanee and grabbed our angels as we left the mountain. “The trip was very rewarding,” Isabel said. “It was great to give back to the community we were visiting and was even better to build community among the EYC.”
We appreciate all of our volunteers who are stepping up to help with this ministry. We really depend on YOU for donations of food items such as sugar, coffee, creamer, fruit, and Sunny D juice. Thank you, people of All Saints’, for your continued support of this ministry. Please remember Saints’ Brew for your monetary gifts, memorials and honorariums.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION
For those of you who follow the daily office readings, Advent I, November 29 began year 2. Living in Hope, Advent meditations from the writings of Henri Nouwen are available in the church during Advent.
Charity begins at home, but generally dies from the lack
of outdoor exercise. --Anonymous
Sometimes, around this time of year, we hear about our youth traveling to Memphis for a shopping expedition to get some of their Christmas shopping done, to enjoy a meal in a Memphis eatery, and to enjoy getting out of town. Recently, however, our EYC took a different kind of shopping trip—they went to Kroger to purchase food items for All Saints’ “A Ton of Food for a Hungry Community” campaign. First the youth gathered at our food collection site to explore what kinds of foods had already been donated and to make a game plan for their shopping. With financial assistance from Father Paul’s “Rector’s Discretionary” account, each youth was allotted $20 to purchase non-perishable food items to add to All Saints’ collection. Working in pairs and small groups, our youth searched Kroger for specials of the day and filled their carts with oatmeal, canned fruits and vegetables, soups, and other non-perishable food items. Many of our youth have already been participating in canned food drives at local schools, but this shopping trip was a wonderful exercise for them to do more than simply bring canned food items from home. Budgeting money (they were only $0.93 over budget!!), searching for nutritious foods, and thinking about ways to use those foods were all meaningful to each of our youth members. Thank you, Father Paul, for sharing a different kind of shopping trip with our youth!

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd A Formation Course For Level I
St. Philip Episcopal Church, Memphis For catechists working with children ages 3-6 January 21-23, April 24 June 23-27, August 4-8
Each session of the Level I adult formation course is very rich and retreat-like in its setting and covers age-appropriate themes for children (and adults) from the Bible and liturgy and the purpose and use of hand-made materials. Experience and presenting materials and help in preparing the catechist’s album (or personal handbook) is also part of the formation course. Many adults have said that the formation course has gone hand-in-hand with their EFM studies or that it has been like an in-depth Bible study for them and has helped in making our liturgy, music and scripture readings come alive. If you hear the Good Shepherd calling you to this ministry, or if you need more information please contact Tommie at 842-4386 / [email protected].
