is a fun and entertaining evening that the whole family will enjoy. Independence Day Parade Participants Wanted

Deadline for participant applications June 14 The City of Plantation Parks & Recreation Department is looking for local

businesses, groups, individuals & organizations to participate in this year’s Independence Day Parade on Thursday, July 4. There is no fee to enter the parade. The parade begins at the corner of Broward Boulevard and N.W. 46th Avenue and is approximately two hours long. The parade ends at Plantation City Hall with an awards ceremony. Entry deadline is Friday, June 14, 2013. In order to participate in the 2013 parade, you must have your completed entry information to us on or before June 14. 9:00 AM – PARADE Begins at the intersection of Broward Boulevard and NW 46th Avenue, heads west to 69th Avenue, to NW 4th Street, to 73rd Avenue, ending at City Hall.

5:30 PM – FREE CHILDREN’S CARNIVAL Central Park, 9151 NW 2nd St.

7:30 PM – FREE CONCERT Featuring one of South Florida’s top variety bands. Concert is held at the north end of Central Park. Bring along a picnic dinner, lawn chairs or blanket.

9:00 PM – FIREWORKS Featuring one of the best pyrotechnic shows in Broward. For your safety and others, please refrain from using fireworks, sparklers and alcoholic beverages within the park.

2013 Schedule Registration Classes Begin

The City reserves the right to add or cancel activities or classes and alter the schedule if deemed necessary. Class books for each session will be available approximately one week prior to registration.

Registration Fee The registration fee for daily aerobics, all classes, programs, etc., is $5.

Registration Times Online registration is now available! You can sign up for select

classes on the web. Log on at Plantation.org and click on “Class Registration.”

program. Register early! All registrations are on a first come first serve basis. Two proofs of residency or Resident I.D. card must be provided at time of registration. Full payment is required at time of registration for all classes and the Kids’ Day Off Program. Supply fees are due the first day of class. No phone-in registrations will be accepted. Waiver forms must be signed for each participant, by the participant, or by a parent or guardian if under 18, in the presence of a City of Plantation Parks & Recreation Department employee. Otherwise the waiver form must be notarized prior to actual registration. Notary services are available on a limited basis.

Resident Policy The Plantation Parks and Recreation Department is operated on tax

dollars from the City of Plantation. Non-residents will be required to pay additional fees for certain classes and for use of the facilities. Residents must provide two proofs of residency at time of registration. Resident Identification Cards are available for purchase at Central Park, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at a cost of $3 per card. This is a non-refundable fee. Two proofs of residency are required.

Cancellation Procedure All classes require a minimum enrollment. Classes will be cancelled if

requirements are not met. Refunds take approximately 4 weeks to process. There will be no refunds after the first week of classes. To request a refund, you must contact the Parks & Recreation Department during the first week of class. A cancellation fee of $15 will be charged.

Holiday Hours There are no classes on City of Plantation observed holidays. For up

to date information about holiday hours, please call 954-452-2510.

Insurance The City of Plantation Parks and Recreation Department does not

carry medical or accident insurance for the participants of its programs. The cost of doing so would be so high that fees charged for programs would become prohibitive. We suggest that you review your family’s personal health insurance plan to ensure that it provides sufficient coverage.

We also suggest that you check with your family physician before participating in any City programs that require physical exertion. If your physician should discover factors that could limit you physically, please consider them when registering for programs.

Notice for Special Needs In compliance with Public Law 101-336 Title 11, Section 202, we

ask you to notify the City of Plantation if the participant has special needs in order to participate. The City of Plantation will provide reasonable accommodations for disabled individuals requesting special assistance in order to attend or participate in meetings, classes or events, provided, however, that a request for such assistance be made to the Parks & Recreation Department 954-452-2516 at least five calendar days prior to the meeting, class or event.

All City of Plantation brochures, programs and pamphlets are available in alternative format, upon request. Please call the Purchasing Department at 954-797-2648.

Admission and programs are free and open to the public

General Information Plantation Historical Museum is a free, non-profit

Museum, preserving Plantation’s history for future generations. Our new addition showcases a Triceratops Dinosaur skeleton and Florida Ice Age exhibit, Dinosaur paintings by Kevin Wakefield and a variety of exhibits.

Permanent displays include the recently redesigned Plantation Police and Fire Department memorabilia, which includes the City’s first Fire Truck, Seminole and Tequesta Native American exhibit, and “Plantation-Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” a collection of historic photos and scrapbooks along with various items from the past.

The Museum also has a Gift Shop and Butterfly Garden. Various exhibits and programs are hosted throughout the year. Please call 954-797-2722 for additional information or to schedule group tours. The Plantation Historical Society welcomes new members.

Swimming Lessons Plantation’s Learn-to-Swim programs offer training for all ages, infant through adult. Programs include the American Red

Cross Swim Lesson Program; Private Swim Lessons; Camp Swim Lessons; Special Needs Swim Lessons; Infant Swim Lessons; and Swim & Dive Instruction.

American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim Program Swim lessons consist of 6 lessons. Makeup lessons are scheduled only when the facility has cancelled a lesson. All courses

are taught by American Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructors (WSIs). Class schedules and fees subject to change. Prices include the $5 registration fee. A $15 cancellation fee applies to any refund. No refunds after class starts.

Red Cross Parent & Child Ages 6 months – 2 years

Course requires the parent or guardian to participate in the water with the child. Parent and child enjoy the water together, under the guidance of an instructor, to safely orient the child to the water. No swimming experience is necessary. SCUBA Diving Lessons with Diver’s Cove Ages 12 & up

Become a PADI certified SCUBA diver. Class is comprised of home study (text, video and self-tests), classroom instruction, 3 sessions at Plantation Central Park Aquatics Complex to learn use of equipment and underwater skills and 4 ocean dives at coral reefs with instructors over 2 days, leading to certification. Youth & Adult Athletics The Plantation Athletic League, P.A.L. is a volunteer organization that coordinates Plantation Youth Athletic Leagues.

Registration is held at the Plantation Central Park Gym, 9151 N.W. 2nd Street. students with a diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome. In our classes, we integrate group activities along with the Social Thinking and Superflex Curriculums developed by Michelle Garcia Winner and Stephanie Madrigal. Children learn about acting, improvisation, musical theater routines, performing scenes and monologues. Campers enjoy arts & crafts, drama games, team building activities and water play. This workshop helps with shyness, improves public speaking and lets children enjoy performing for an audience. Parent observation is helpful at the end of each session.
