    BACKGROUND

Recovery Idol was ounded in 2011 to showcase the talent o persons in recovery. A cityagency The Philadelphia Department o Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability;a recovery community organization Pennsylvania Recovery Organization-AchievingCommunity Together (PRO-ACT); and a citywide coalition thePhiladelphia Recovery Coalition (PRC); came together and partnered

to host the rst Recovery Idol.

    Heres how it worked:

    1) The partners planned the competition, including identiying several locationsaround the city to hold six rounds o auditions and competitions. The nal competitiontook place at PRO-ACTs Recovery Walk in September 2011. The winner received aplaque, studio recording time, and an opportunity to perorm beore tens o thousandso people.

    2) The rst round o auditions was closed to the public and started six months beore thenals. Contestants were given a list o song selections to choose rom to compete in

    each round o the competition.

ARE YOU READY FOR A RECOVERY IDOL?

Imagine doing a Recovery Idol contest in your community. We all know the importance ocelebrating recovery. A Recovery Idol contest is one way to help someone grow their talentsin recovery while bringing recovery to the wider community. Recovery Idol is also a greatway to spread the word that recovery is un and to invite the broader community to be parto the celebration.

    Getting Started

    1) Form a committee to delegate tasks and develop a team that will excite contestantsand the community to get involved. Keep the committees size manageableideally, three to ten people. The number o people should be small enough to allow meaningulparticipation by each person, but large enough to generate a lot o ideas and provide avariety o skills. Make sure to involve your aith and other community leaders in additionto recovery community leaders. See the Sample Timeline below or more details.According to Derrick Ford, The timeline was the most important part o the planningas a whole.

    2) Develop the rules beore the auditions start so that contestants will know whats

expected o them and how the contest will unold. Rules should include how andwhere to sign up, whats expected o contestants, and how the judging will work. The Appendix includes the materials developed in Philadelphia. You can modiy andchange them or your community.

    3) Develop promotional materials that are easy to use and understand. They shouldinclude inormation such as the contest locations, times or rehearsals, and rules othe competition.
