ST

Though all 16 members of the BIG EASTConference field women’s volleyballteams, Providence College ceased its

league participation in the sport after the 2002 sea-son. The other 15 schools take part in round-robinplay during the regular season, and the top eightteams then participate in the BIG EASTChampionship, a single-elimination tournamentwith the winner receiving the conference’s auto-matic berth to the NCAA Championship. This year’sformat is a departure from the traditional four-teamevent that had been in place since the Irish joinedthe league, with the exception of one year. In 1999,the league experimented with an expanded three-day, six-team event. For more information on theBIG EAST Conference, see page 131.

Notre Dame has experienced unprecedentedsuccess in the decade since joining the league in1995. The Irish have compiled a 107-6 (.947) regular-season mark, highlighted by nine titles and win-ning streaks of 45 and 35 consecutive matches.Notre Dame won 58 straight at home in BIG EASTregular-season play and currently stands 60-1 (.984).ND had a home conference winning streak of 74straight matches from 1991 to 2004. The Irish havewon eight BIG EAST tournament championships, posting a 19-2 (.905) mark in the event and reachingthe final every year. Notre Dame also has domi-nated the conference awards, winning player-of-the-year honors six times and the coach-of-the-yearaward on four occasions. In eight instances, Irishplayers have been named the league tournament’smost outstanding player. Also, Notre Dame student-athletes have garnered 35 all-conference acco-lades, including 21 first-team honors, whichaccount for more than one-third of the total first-team selections during the span.

Prior to joining the BIG EAST, Notre Dame partic-ipated in the North Star Conference from 1983-87and in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference from1990-94. The Irish won regular-season and tourna-ment titles in the NSC in 1986 and ’87, and capturedboth the regular-season and tournament champi-onships in the MCC in 1991, ’92, ’93, and ’94. In 19years of conference participation, Notre Dame haswon 14 regular-season crowns and 13 league tour-naments, while compiling a 155-18 (.896) mark inregular-season conference matches. The Irish won78 consecutive matches against league opponentsfrom 1990-98.

In 2003, the Irish finished first in thecountry in team blocking (3.72) after being second and fifth in the two previous years. Then-sopho-more Lauren Brewster, who was fourth in the NCAA as a freshman (and again as a junior) in thecategory, led the nation in individual blocking (1.78). Both crowns marked program firsts.

In conference action, the Irish have won a total of 62 statistical titles in nine years of league mem-bership, 42 in team categories (24 in conference-only categories and 18 in overall categories) and 25in individual statistics (11 in conference play and 14 in overall).
