Page 10: Recording Attributes

You got it Right 2.3.2 is the instruction for recording the title proper. Title proper is a core element. You

are referred back to 2.2.2 for choosing the sources of information.

For instructions on transcription you need to see the Basic instructions on recording title at 2.3.1.4, here you are also referred back to 1.7 for general guidelines on transcription

Page 14: Recording Attributes

You got it Right RDA 2.3.1.4 tells you to transcribe the title as found on the resource.

Under the general rules for transcription (1.7) you are referred to instructions for capitalisation in Appendix A. A.4 contains the guidelines for titles of manifestations

which tells you to capitalise the first letter of the first word.

The alternative instruction at 1.7.1 allows institutions to follow in house guidelines on capitalisation therefore the title for this website could be recorded in capitals.

Is “other title information” core?

Yes

No

Recording Attributes

Page 16: Recording Attributes

You got it Right Other title information is not core in RDA, however LC practice is to make it core

(see the LC-PCC PS). It is likely that many libraries will follow LC practice.

Place of publication is not on the Homepage but is found

elsewhere on the website. Should it be recorded in square

brackets?YesNo

Recording Attributes

Page 19: Recording Attributes

You got it Right RDA 2.8.2.2 – Place of publication can be taken from:

a) The same source as the publisher’s nameb) Another source within the resource itselfc) One other source specified under 2.2.4

There is no instruction to use square brackets

If the place of publication does not appear on the resource at all you may record it in square brackets (see RDA 2.8.2.6)

Page 22: Recording Attributes

You got it Right RDA 2.8.4.3 instructs you to “record the publisher’s name applying the basic

instructions on recording publication statements given under 2.8.1”.

At 2.8.1.4 the instruction says “transcribe places of publication and publishers' names in the form in which they appear on the source of information. Apply the

general guidelines on transcription given under 1.7”

At 1.7 we are instructed to transcribe the element as it appears on the resource. At 1.7.3 we can add punctuation if necessary for clarity.

Appendix B gives guidelines on abbreviations, but there are no instructions for abbreviating transcribed elements – see B.4

extent of the website1 website

Page 25: Recording Attributes

You got it Right RDA 3.4.1.3 tells us to record the number of units and an appropriate term from

the carrier type list (3.3.1.3).

At 3.4.1.5 we have the option of using a term in common usage if the carrier type terms are not appropriate. This decision may be a combination cataloguer’s

judgement and terms preferred by your institution.

record them.

Content, media and carrier types have been defined in the Open Metadata Registry which means that both humans and machines can read them, where as

Page 40: Recording Attributes

You got it Right The preferred title for the work, in this case, is the same as the title of the

manifestation. RDA acknowledges this situation at 6.2.2.4 with the example:

Little acorn - Preferred title for work by Christa Kauble that has only one expression and only one manifestation. The manifestation was published

under the title: The little acorn

In practice, a MARC 130 or 240 field is not added when it is the same as the title proper of the manifestation. The MARC 245 field effectively acts as the

authorised access point

Making decisions about choosing who is the creator of a resource is about the relationship between the person, family or corporate body and the resource.

Guidelines on making this decision are in chapter 18 – and we will look at this in detail today.
