Columbia slice was produced by Terry Melcher and is listed as 4-43271. ALBUM OF THE WEEK Every once in a while a completely irresistible performer comes along. Soupy Sales-a true clown-is that rare bird. He teaches his toothy mouse dance and indulges in some other frolicksome pastimes on this amusing package. There should be a Soupy in every home and perhaps there soon will be. Disk is ABC - Paramount ABC 511; ABCS 511.

BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOMEBOB DYLAN-Columbia CL 2328; CS 9128.

Poet of the young and committed,Dylan here rounds up some of his re-cent thoughts, one of which "Subter-ranean Homesick Blues," is making thescene as a single. There are some jokeshere and a number of legitimate com-plaints about the modern condition.Dylan is an undisciplined artist but anartist nonetheless. Good record.

REPARATA AND THE DELRONS-World Artists WAM 2006; WAS 3006.

Girls give surly rendition of a num-ber of rock and roll tunes. Their brandof singing seems to be especially popu-lar these days and should be the in-centive for sizeable sales. In additionto their first hit and their second one,"Tommy," they chant "If I Fell," "IHave a Boy Friend" and "Dedicated tothe One I Love."

SOUNDTRACKTHE GENTLE RAIN

SOUNDTRACK-Mercury MG 21016; SR 61016.

Luis Bonfa, who penned the hauntingmusic for "Black Orpheus," has donethe same chore for this new film, meantto be somewhat of a sequel to the afore-mentioned movie. His melodies are allsensitive, winsome and wistful. Cer-tainly they will be played for manyyears to come.

JAZZALEXANDER THE GREAT

MONTY ALEXANDER-Pacific Jazz 86.

Pianist has a great time tickling thekeys and they seem to be tickling back. The disk is his first and signals a veryimportant beginning. His chording isespecially striking-powerful andpleasing. The tunes he redoes include"If I Were a Bell," "Comin' Home

Never Been in Love Before."

SOULRAY BRYANT-Sue LP 1036 (m -s).

Soul piano playing by one of thebest. Rhythmic chord after rhythmicchord adds up to some moving keypounding on tunes like "I Miss YouSo," "I Almost Lost My Mind" (witha beautiful build built-in), "Since IFell for You" and "Goldfinger." Lis-teners will definitely get with it.

New Method For BMI AwardsBMI has decided on a new method for determining

its annual BMI awards. From now on a record willhave to reach the Top 10 in three of five papers. In addition to Record World, they include Bill-board, Cash Box, Variety and Music Business. Form-erly a BMI award went to the publisher and writersof a song if it reached Top 10 in any of the papers. Now it will take a majority of the five.

Dying British Cycle?Last week we suggested that the reports of the

dying British cycle were somewhat premature. Thisweek's installment is that "Game Of Love" by WayneFontana and the Mindbenders (a British group) hasreached No. 1 replacing "I'm Telling You Now" byFreddie and the Dreamers (a British group).

* * *

Put The Correct Timing On RecordsDisk jockeys are complaining more and more that

record companies are either not putting the timeon records or are putting incorrect times on them.Any disk jockey or programming director who takeshis work seriously is highly dependent on the accu-rate timing of records. Not to have the correcttime on a record is not only an annoyance but adeterrent to proper programming. Record manufac-turers would do well to correct this problem.

* *

Chart ChallengersThis week Record World institutes a new feature

called Chart Challengers. It is designed to give anearly indication of the records which seem mostlikely to reach the Top 100 in a week or two. Forthe most part they are records which are just reach-ing the Coming Up chart. Programmers and dealerswill find that they can get a fast picture of thenewest hits by consulting this chart.

Stig Anderson Lets Us Letkis

Stig Anderson,Anderson, prexy of Sweden Music and a principal of PolarMusic, a Swedish record company, is currently conducting busi-ness negotiations in the U.S., with an emphasis on the Letkis.

Anderson's visit is for the primary purpose of exploiting theLetkis melodies. The Letkis (or Jenka) is a kissing combinationof the polka and the bunny hop. It swept out of Sweden, toppedcharts in Europe, stired up action in Japan and is currently pick-ing up steam in this country. Anderson's Sweden Music owns prac-tically all of the copyrighted Letkis melodies and validates theauthenticity of recordings of Letkis rhythms with its own offi-cial stamp.

Anderson has already leased masters of Letkis LPs to the fol-lowing American record companies: Reprise, Vee-Jay, Audio Fidel-ity, London, Aura and Mercury. Mercury is rushing out its "Scan-danavian Letkis Dance Band" LP conducted by S. 0. Walldoff onthe Philips label. LPs on other labels should be hitting the storesshortly.

After making a grand slam in New York, Anderson left for fourdays on the coast. Included in his schedule there are meetingswith the producers of "Shindig" and Four Star TV, plus exten-sive press and magazine interviews with the Letkis Dancers, the troupe that Anderson brought over here to introduce theLetkis. Then it's back to Sweden for mor Letkis LPs on hisPolar label. In the works on that label now: a Letkis LP byFin Timber, a "Crazy Otto" type artist.

Maxin To EuropeArnold Maxin, recently ap-

pointed Executive Veep of theBig 3 Music Corporation (Rob-bins -Feist -Miller), leaves forEurope April 22 for confabswith the pubbery's affiliates.

Maxin will hold London, Parisand Cologne meetings to dis-cuss current music scores andgeneral policy relative to Big3 world-wide music exploita-tion. He will wrap up music de-tails on MGM's "Where theSpies Are" now being filmed inLondon and will also hop toSpain for MGM's "DoctorZhivago."

New Freddie OutCHICAGO-In a rush move

due to the increasing popular-ity of Freddie and the Dream-ers, Mercury Records startedpressing the new F & D single,"Do the Freddie," on April 8and released it to dealers overthe week -end.

The label had a special lyricand rock rhythm written inChicago, then exported ImportCo-ordinator Lou Reizner toManchester, England, April 5to meet with Freddie, etc. Theboys recorded the sides thefollowing day.

BY DOUG McCLELL AND

NEW YORK-Three separateunits of "Dick Clark's Caravanof Stars" started their cross-country, 45 -day tour April 15,with No. 3, subtitled, just tocomplicate matters, "Gene Pit-ney's Shower of Stars with TimTormey," a 1 s o headliningUnited Artists Records' risingBobby Goldsboro.

Following a recent three -and -a -half -week jaunt with the FourSeasons, Bobby considers him-self something of a veteran atthis kind of "bussing."

"If you're with guys who justlike to sleep, all the travelingcan be boring," Bobby opinedjust before embarking. "But Iknow all these guys real well, and it should be a ball."

Also on the tour, besides Pit-ney and Tormey, are Chad andJeremy, Vic Dana (fresh froman appendectomy), the BillBlack Combo, the Reasons, DarinD'Anna, Gary Lewis and thePlayboys, the Crystals, the Re-flections, the Rag Dolls, BrianHyland, Ronnie Cochran andSusan Wayne.

When he completes this tourhe expects to start preparing forhis film debut, a project, "Godwillin'," set to go before thecareras around June in Miamiwith Goldsboro's buddies GenePitney and Roy Orbison alsosinging and acting in the cast.

It was with Roy Orbison'stouring band that Bobby, a bornFloridian and a bred Alabaman, got his first professional break.Although he had always wanted

to play baseball for a living, aukelele gift in high school blos-somed into a guitar and theshow biz bug. Bobby left Au-burn College in his third yearand toured the nation for twoyears with Roy, even collabo-rated with him on several songs.

And Bobby is quite a prolifictunesmith. He's written all ofhis UA hits except "Me Japa-nese Boy," which is a BurtBacharach credit. "Voodoo Wo-man," the current Goldsborodeck, is also a Bobby original;and he wrote all the tunes onhis "Little Things" album, too.

"Funny thing," confided Bob-by. " 'Little Things' as a singlehas sold 30 or 40,000 more than`See the Funny Little Clown,'which went higher on thecharts."

Bobby's first two albums wereballads, so were the first threeUA singles. "Voodoo Woman" isan uptempo piece, however. "Ifit does well, maybe we'll comeback to ballads-don't want toget in a rut," said Bobby. Herecorded his early material inNew York, but has been doingthe later sides in Nashville."They know how to do it-ther&b, etc.-better down there, they've been playing it for solong. And they're so relaxed. The essence of the 'NashvilleSound' is the separation of in-struments. The lush ballads-with the violins and everything-sound better up here."

As a result of hearing Bobbyon a demo record, Jack Gold, then an independent record pro-ducer (now director of A&R atUA), called Bobby and set uphis first session: "Molly," whichwas placed on the Laurie label. Then came "The Letter." WhenGold joined UA, he immediatelysaw to it that Bobby was signedto a recording contract there.

At UA, Bobby, a modest,clean-cut 24 -year -old, has al-ready gone a long way-and thisweek: New England and upstateNew York.

CAPERS

Deejays Are AnnouncersHOLLYWOOD-A young and relatively inexperienced disk

jockey said to me the other day, "I always inject a little humorinto all the live commercials I do, sort of ad lib around thembecause I have a tough time reading a straight spot."

After a short discussion with him I found that he really didhave a tough time reading a straight spot. He ad libbed andplayed around with his commercials because he was unableto read them straight. Though he had become a fairly adequatedeejay, he had not yet become an announcer. And make nomistake about it, djs are announcers . . . or at least they shouldbe.

Ted Randal

Those of you who are just learning the radioprofession should realize immediately that vir-tually all of the men who are quite successfulas disk jockeys are also quite versatile as an-nouncers. Most of them could handle any typeof show on any type of station because theyprobably have done so in the past, or they havetaken the time to acquaint themselves in thatarea. Many of the neophytes in the radio indus-try erroneously think all that is necessary isthat one like records, be familiar with themand sound relatively pleasant on the air. And

there are many men who do fairly well in the business withonly a little more knowledge and ability than that, but mostof them are not able to climb up many rungs of the ladder.

It takes a lot of work to become an announcer; it requiresan equal amount of effort to become a good disk jockey. Ifyou are thinking of becoming a comedian, just ask any oneof the few successful comedians how much time and efforthe expended before he "made it." And if you think you are ableto ad lib humor, you'd better stop to consider why Bob Hopefinds it necessary to spend huge amounts of money each yearfor a staff of writers.

There is only one thing that makes a man an expert in hisprofession, and that is work. If you are blessed with the basicability, work hard and you will be amazed at how easy it is tobecome a successful disk jockey and announcer.

* * *

Randal's Ramblings...If you've already read about

the "Shindig" roadshow, thismay seem to be old hat, butI'm so impressed with it thata few words have to be passedalong to you. With such actsas the Newbeats, the Hon -dells, the Dixie Cups, JohnAndrea, Sue Thompson, JimDoval & The Gauchos (theyare something else), RooseveltGrier and the regular Shindigdancers, singers and band onewould expect healthy turnouts. They have not just beenhealthy . . . they've been totalsellouts!

Surprisingly, what has im-pressed me most is the caliberof the show itself, probablythe most professionally per-formed show of this type everto hit the road. Kudos ofcourse must go to the entirestaff, but a special type ofapplause should be reservedfor Jack Good for his insist-

ence on perfection in every de-tail.

While the "Shindig" show isout setting records, the Os-mond Brothers are settingsome kind of a record of theirown, probably that of beingthe youngest group ever toplay at the Fairmont Hotel inSan Francisco. The boys, rang-ing in age from about 8-15,are causing Papa some con-cern because of an increasinginterest in contemporary music. . . A smiling and pink-cheeked Ian Whitcomb wasvery excited about getting tosee Hollywood last week. Hewas in town with his producer,Jerry Dennon, to film "Holly-wood a Go Go" and the April21 edition of "Shindig."

Both San Francisco and LosAngeles are preparing them-selves for a visit from thepopular Columbia artist JeanPaul Vignon. He'll be in bothplaces sometime this week.

What's more, the Zombies arebilled in the same size type as the others.

Too Much LabelingIn Disk Biz; RCA'sVet Joe Williams

BY DAVE FINKLENEW YORK - The record

world is populated in partthese days by stars who haverocketed to fame on thestrength of one record - evenone recording session - and itis in this world that Joe Wil-liams, recording now for over10 years, said recently, "I'mjust beginning. I haven't evenscratched the surface. There'sso much I haven't done."

And he meant quite sincerelythat, even though he has earnedwidespread respect as a top-notch musician, he still has notsatisfied himself.

Henderson's fourth RCA Vic-tor package, "The Song isYou," is released this month-an album entirely composed ofstandards primarily of pre -1940 vintage.

Such repertoire underlineswhat is an essential fact aboutthe Joe Henderson that is nowsinging on the night club -TV -European -RCA Victor circuit. He is not, as many buyers maystill think, a singer restrictedto the jazz catalogs. "Labels,"he said, "are put on by peoplein the business. There is toomuch categorizing and it canbe harmful."

(RCA, by the way, has beentoying with the idea of releas-ing as a single the lush andfull Henderson version of"Yours is My Heart Alone"from "The Song is You" elpee.)

As a matter of fact, at thispoint, Henderson wants toscratch as many surfaces aspossible. "I'd like to do a coun-try and Western album. Andthere are rock and roll songsI'd like to sing. I might add`Splish Splash' to my reper-toire."

Imperial's Promo Director, Renny Roker, came into town andlaid one on us by the O'Jays, "Lipstick Traces (On A Ciga-rette) !" Hit of the Week on WVON (Chicago) and WWIN (Bal-timore).

Detroit's WCHB power has been increased to 10,000 KW. 100record programmed weekly. This should have a dramatic effecton the record market. Picks of the Week on WCHB: No. 1 -"It'sGrowing" (the Temptations) on Gordy; Soul Pick Hit: "LipstickTraces" (the O'Jays) on Imperial.

Big in Houston, Texas: Chet McDowell's recording of "Chainsof Love" on Dargl. The KYOK broadcast from Palladium Ball-room on April 6 for the Selma Alabama Freedom Ball netted $3,-900.

Steve Walling, program director from WROZ, Evansville, Ind.,says that "My Man" by Johnnie Matthews (Blue Rock) is a solidsmash locally. He urges more airplay for this record.

Blue Rock A&R producer Andre Williams says that Chicago'sBudland (64th & Cottage Grove) will be the scene of its first"live" on -location recording session Wednesday, April 21. Ofcourse, Blue Rock artists will be featured. The press is invited. The Four Jays (E. Rodney Jones, Jim Reese, Jerry Murray andJay Jay) will be on hand plus the faithful Budlanders.

Jack Gibson, Motown's national promotion director, and Iwere sneak previewers at the Supremes' latest session, and to ourears the girls will have their fifth No. 1 hit. The Supremes willappear at the Copa June 15 during the height of the prom season.

After their Copa appearance, they will fly to Hollywood torecord their Christmas elpee.

The Supremes' tribute to Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye's tributeto Nat "King" Cole. These are worth waiting for. Jack alsoreported that during his latest trip to St. Louis, Robert "BQ" ofKATZ was hard at work on the Dave Dixon Memorial Fund. Abig show is scheduled at Kiel Auditorium during the early partof May, 1965. Dixon was the late program director of KATZand president of NARA.

Jerry Butler and Betty Everett are scoring heavily on theirlatest "Since I Don't Have You" (Vee-Jay). These two are anatural together.

Soon to be released from Motown: an LP by Billy Eckstine.Eckstine fans will be pleased and new fans will be won. Thisone is a must.

Roulette's Red Schwartz writes that E. Rodney Jones (WVON)flipped when he heard the Knights and Arthur on "I Wanna GoBack." Another good one is "Walkin' " by Jimmy Jones.

Portrait Of Al Hirt:

From Carnegie To Gleason SubBY DAVE FINKLE

NEW YORK -NEW OR-LEANS-Since the night ofTuesday, April 13, was Gram-my night, it seemed like a niceidea to talk to a relatively re-laxed Grammy winner fromlast year in the short hoursbefore the award -giving cere-mony.

Record World chose to phoneRCA Victor's Al Hirt at hisclub in New Orleans far awayfrom the sites of the impendingfestivities. Although Hirt hadbeen asked to participate inthis year's award doling andwas also a nominee in theBest Instrumental Performance,Non -Jazz category for his gold -disked "Cotton Candy," he wasforced to stay home because ofa previous contracted engage-ment.

"I'm sorry I can't be there, but it came up in such a hurrythis year. Too late for me tochange my plans," Hirt said.

At Carnegie April 22-24But, he reminded, he will be

arriving in New York Monday,April 19, to begin rehearsingfor a rather exciting pair ofplaydates at Carnegie HallApril 22 and April 24. "We'llbegin working on Tuesday," heinfoed. "I haven't even seenthe arrangements. Gerald Wil-son is doing them and I knowthey'll be good. I'll be workingwith a big band for one halfof the program and using mysextet in the second half anddoing some singing. We'll haveabout 20 instruments and it'llbe a swing band."

Certainly an exciting pros-pect for concert ticket holders. But, the Hirt shebang is alsoan exciting prospect for recordbuyers since it's going to berecorded by RCA probably forsummer release, making it acandidate for next year's Gram-my and probably for anotherHirt gold disk. (Al was re-cently awarded two R. I. -A. A. plaques at one sitting-

the first was for the above -mentioned "Cotton Candy" andthe second was for "SugarLips." "Cotton Candy," inci-dentally, was a Record World"album pick of the week" aswas his recent "That HoneyHorn Sound" package.)

Replacing GleasonAlso coming up on the Hirt

schedule is a 13 -week summerTV series slotted in the JackieGleason Saturday night hour."We're looking for the formatright now," Hirt said of theshow that will be produced inNew York by Ed Sullivan inhis first producing ventureaway from his own show. "It'llbe a variety show and we'rethinking of featuring youngeracts in the first half and actswith an older appeal in the sec-ond half. I won't be involvedin every act, but I want to doa number of things." This un-doubtedly means singing a laHirt's recent TV appearancewith Eydie Gorme and DeanMartin when he laid down histrumpet for some soloing, duet-ing and trioing. It could alsomean some classical forays ala Hirt's recent RCA packagein cahoots with Arthur Fied-ler.

"I want the show to be real,to be true," Hirt said.

The stakes are high sinceCBS has an option to pick upthe hour for 39 more if it issuccessful. In that case, Hirtis hoping he'll be able to haveit emanate from New Orleans."It's a natural for a TV showto be done here. Part of itcould even be done in my placeif we could get the proper fa-cilities. And that shouldn't bedifficult. I hope it works outwell."

have mushroomed during thepast seven years into the larg-est merchandising operation ofits kind in the world. Projectedgross retail sales via more than500 licensed manufacturers ofsome 2,500 products rangingfrom window shades to bubblebath in '64: More than $120million.

The soaring success of theHanna -Barbera combo actuallydates back just seven years tothe day they were relieved oftheir duties at MGM Studios-although the partnership firstflowered 25 years ago whenthey created the seven -timesOscar winning cartoon short,"Tom & Jerry," at the samestudio. For their TV showsbrought them even greaterfame and fortune.

Today, Hanna -Barbera Pro-ductions, Inc., owns and fills acontemporary three-story, $1,-250,000 building on a DA acreplot in North Hollywood, andemploys some 250 artists, tech-nicians, writers and directors.

In June, 1964, H -B took thegiant stride into feature filmswith the release by ColumbiaPictures of its initial feature-length motion picture, "HeyThere, It's Yogi Bear."

Additionally, H -B is engagedin the production of commer-cials and industrial films, bothanimated and live -action, formany of the nation's leadingcorporations. In fact, total H -Bproduction budget for 1964 willhit approximately $12 million.

The new Hanna -Barbera al-bums will feature the variouscartoon characters they havecreated in four-color packagesand will be skin -wrapped. The12 singles will be comprised ofexcerpts from the LPs and willalso be colorfully wrapped.Their appeal, it is felt, will beto families, rather than strictlychildren-as with the Hanna -Barbera TV cartoon shows, which have proved popularwith all age groups. The labelis stressing the wax as "con-temporary" in appeal, withseveral Top 40 stations alreadysigning on to utilize theirpunch lines and sound effects.

The label also has signed theCreations, whose first singlewill be "Dance in the Sand";and Danny Hutton from Ire-land, Roger and Lyn and willalso be recording Pebbles andBam-Bam, two characters fromthe "Flintstones" TVer. Nego-tiations are underway to signactress -singer Rhonda Fleming,Bill Doggett and a couple ofvery important male names ininternational cinema circles.

After Foreign DistribsThe record company is very

interested in setting up foreigndistribution - again, the TVshows are immense overseas.Hanna -Barbera has been ap-proached by many foreign in-terests, and Don Bohanan isplanning a European trip soonto check matters. "It's an im-portant area," he said, "notonly for record distribution butalso publishing."

Bohanan started his careerin Cincinnati as a salesman forKing Records, followed by anappointment at Coral Recordsas their Midwest Division SalesManager in Detroit, where hehelped set up the Coral distri-bution. He next worked withGene Autry and Challenge Rec-ords for about a year and ahalf, followed by a meetingwith Liberty prexy Al Bennettthat proved extremely bene-ficial to all. Bohanan joinedLiberty as National Sales Man-ager, becoming Bennett's right-hand man and director of allmarketing departments. At Lib-erty Records for seven years,Bohanan helped set up theLiberty distribution and branchoperations around the country.

Hanna & BarberaBill Hanna was born in Mel-

rose, New Mexico, and spenthis school years studying engi-neering and journalism. Hejoined a firm in California asa structural engineer, butfound himself one of the de-pression's army of unemployedin the '30s. During this timehe turned to cartooning andfound a spot with Leon Schles-singer's cartoon company inHollywood.

Joe Barbera was born in NewYork City, attended the Ameri-can Institute of Banking andwent to work as an accountantfor New York's Irving TrustCompany. An inveterate dood-ler and dreamer, Barberastarted submitting gag draw-ings to magazines and man-aged to sell one to Collier's,soon became a regular contrib-utor to leading magazines. Hesubsequently joined Van BurenAssocates as a sketch artist, and much later used his knowl-edge of finance in the manage-ment of the multi -million dollarHanna -Barbera comic -empire.

In 1937, Hanna was hiredby MGM as a director andstory man in the cartoon divi-sion, and Barbera simultan-eously was employed as an ani-mator and writer at the samestudio. During their 20 years

at MGM, the team turned outmore than 125 segments of theaforementioned and highly ac-claimed "Tom and Jerry" the-atrical cartoon.

With this kind of talent andexperience and accomplish-ment behind it, Hanna -BarberaRecords should soon be asmuch of a household name asYogi Bear or MuckleberryHound.

PresentingGary Burton, at 22, is con-

sidered by many to be one ofthe dominant forces in the pro-fession of his choosing. Theyoung vibraharpist, when athis best, reveals near flawlesstechnique and admirable soloconstruction.

Bright stars on the jazzhorizon, as in most profes-sions, appear almost daily, butfortunately only the cream ofthe crop achieves any perman-ent prominence. Burton hasbecome one of the more power-ful forces on his instrument;and it looks like a permanentposition.

Burton, who records for RCAVictor, was added to the label'sroster after being heard byRCA's man in Nashville, ChetAtkins. Since that time the mu-sician has recorded some 25albums, many as featured solo-ist or leader. I remember anLP that Burton appeared onwith guitarist Hank Garlandon the Columbia label. It wasas much a showcase for Burtonas it was for Garland, who wasthe featured performer. Ofcourse there's been lots ofmusical maturing since thattime, (he was 17 then) butthat instinctive feeling for jazzalready was evident in the vi-bist's playing.

Since his signing with RCA,Gary has been ever active, atboth performing and writing. The artist worked with GeorgeShearing for a year, and alsodid some writing for the group.Last year Burton joined theStan Getz quartet, the biggestboost to his career so far. Themusician's subdued swinging,an integral part of the group'ssound, and his adept compos-ing (he wrote the perky "ASinging Song" that the grouphas taken on as sort of atheme) are not his only con-tributions to the Getz group.Gary is also the quartet's busi-ness manager. How about that?

At the Tony Bennett -StanGetz concert at Lincoln Cen-ter's Philharmonic Hall April9, Burton gave the impressionthat he was a little tense atthe beginning of the first num-ber. He was a bit more cau-tious than usual during hissolos. However, after a coupleof numbers, the ideas began toflow; Burton loosened up and

I have purposely refrainedfrom comparing Burton to anyother musician because he isnot going to be the next MiltJackson, or the next anybody. He is the first Gary Burton, and there's a lot to be said forthat.

. . . and all of a sudden I lostthe desire to see the fox cornered,so I got off the horse (he wasvery relieved), faced the fact thatevery time I blew my huntinghorn I was ingloriously sharp orflat and told the hounds that itwas time they turned vegetarian, anyway! Why, you ask yourselves, should Great Britain's premierhuntsman be overcast at a mo-ment's notice while blowing ahorn, riding a horse, encouragingthe hounds to run like the wind, suggesting to a fox that heshouldn't be so difficult, and allthis while he's listening to atransistor radio?

I'll tell you why. I was tuned in to a broadcast that slowly di-vulged the contents of a small leather bag that just happened tobe the property of a splendid Englishman known as the Chancellorof the Exchequer. Actually, I'm told that he purchased a new bagfor the occasion, and some new little things came out of this newlittle bag that didn't make me feel like a new man one little bit.You see, because I happen to indulge in that vulgar practice ofpushing clean, fresh, pure air out of my lungs and substituting athick brownish -bluish counterpart of a London smog known ascigarette smoke, I have to part with six extra shining copper pen-nies-if I decided to fill my !interior, not with clear crystal moun-tain running water, but with a clear crystal liquid that doesn'trun or even flow from a mountain, but somehow ends up a captivein a bottle labeled Whisky, then I have to part with an extra 48shining copper pennies. And to cap it all, no longer can I takemy girl friend, her mother and father and her little brat of abrother out to a restaurant on my expense account, and all becausethat Chancellor chappie opened his little leather bag and ruinedmy hunting. He said: "It's just not cricket, chaps, and it's gotto stop."

Well, I mean to say, how can I ring up Sid Parnes in NewYork, invite him over to dinner in London and say, "Bring yourown food?"

Spiffing ShindigFor NME Anniversary

On the subject of food, Brian Epstein sent out invitations inreckless manner the other day, and about 500 of us turned up atLondon's "Talk of the Town" to help celebrate NME's third an-niversary; and it was all pretty spiffing. Not only did he feedthe multitude, but allowed the champagne to flow freely andgave us some cabaret supplied by the Fourmost . . . and twomore of his newer entertainers, namely Michael Haslam and anew folk group from the North of England known as the Silkies(three boys and a gal, and rather nice, too). Tijuana Brass ScoresWith Amer - achi Music

Moment Of TruthFor Herb Alpert

Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brasshad their biggest hit with "TheLonely Bull," and record buyershave been shouting "Ole!" eversince.

Still in his 20s, slim, black -haired and dark -eyed Herb Al-pert looks as though he mighthave come from South of theBorder himself. He didn't, buthis Latin good looks add a ro-mantic touch to the albumsbearing the A&M label (the Mis for his partner, Jerry Moss)and his vocal, instrumental andarranging talents give that spe-cial something to the music hecalls "quasi-Mexican-a combi-nation of American and Maria -chi," or Amer-achi..

How does a hit get that way?Let Alpert tell it. "One night afriend of mine, Sol Lake, wasplaying a tune on the piano-something called 'Twinkle Star,'one of those persistent melodiesthat pop into your head whenyou wake up, and refuse to goaway. It seemed to me to lenditself perfectly to a Spanishtempo. We worked with it fora while, adding trumpet, piano, bass drums and mandolin, usingmy voice and that of the mando-lin player, plus a girl singer.

"Then we incorporated thesounds of the Tijuana arena-the trumpet call as the bullcomes out, the roar of the crowd, all the noise and excitment ofthe bull ring."

Galloping 'Bull'Finally, out trotted "The

Lonely Bull." In a matter ofdays, he was galloping. SanFrancisco, Los Angeles, Seattle. Then from all across the coun-try distributors began clamor-ing for the A&M line.

Things look bright for TijuanaBrass these days, with the thirdand latest album, "South of theBorder," listed for the past twomonths in the Top 10 in LosAngeles, and moving up allacross the country.

It didn't just happen. "Youhave to know where you're go-ing," says Herb, whose earliestdreams were of being a jazztrumpeter. He comes from a mu-sical family-his mother playsthe violin, his father the mando-lin, his sister the piano and hisbrother the drums. "We couldhave our own orchestra, anddouble as a basketball team."His brother was the only pro-fesional musician in the familyuntil Herb started blowing his

Herb Alpertown horn.

Even in his motion picturework, which he regarded as astopgap on the way to the musi-cal top, Herb often wound upon the trumpet or the drums,as for instance in "The TenCommandments"-"I played thedrums in the scene where Mosescomes down the mountain."

His two years in the Armywere spent as solo trumpeterwith the Sixth Army Band atthe Presidio in San Francisco, where he kept in practice thehard way, which included play-ing taps for as many as 18funerals in one day.

Herb's wife, Sharon, andyoung son, Dore (named forDore Schary), round out thepicture of this young man witha horn, and a future as brightas Tijuana Brass.

Shucher ManagesSlim Whitman

NASHVILLE - Talent mana-ger Herb Shucher has announcedthe signing of veteran C&Wperformer Slim Whitman to anexclusive pact. Shucher indi-cated that he would be acceler-ating his management interests.

For a number of years Shuch-er's relationship with Whitmanhas been that of friend and ad-

visor, the association dating backto the days when Shucher reppedImperial Records here and wasresponsible for recording Slim.

In recent years Whitman hasmade gold records but only lim-ited appearances, and as a resultShucher felt that he has not beenoverexposed. "There are vastareas in which requests for theappearance of Slim Whitmanhave been received," statedShucher. "We will continue tolimit these appearances, but in-tend to step up the coverage toinclude TV as well as auditoriumand fair dates." Whitman com-mences a six -week p.a. tour inCapetown, So. Africa, April 21.

Shucher, who in the past hasguided the careers of such topartists as Jim Reeves and theBrowns, plans an extensive pro-mo campaign on Whitman.

BY ED HAMILTON

Five Grammys To Roger! This past Tuesday night the Nashville Chapter of The Na-

tional Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences presented itsawards for outstanding performances in the field of country andwestern music. The bash was held in Jimmy Hyde's beautifulCarousel Club in Printer's Alley here and was attended by ap-proximately 300 of those representing the industry here.

RCA Victor's George Hamilton made the presentations, andfor a while it was rather reminiscent of some of the old movieAcademy Award presentations when Walt Disney's name wasthe one most frequently called out to accept an award. In thiscase it was the name of Smash Record's Roger Miller. Therewere six awards up for grabs . . . Roger walked off with five! Itwas a pretty well-known fact that most here in the industryfigured Roger would pick up two, and possibly even three, awards. But, five??? And the most surprised person was Rogerhimself. He picked up the awards for the Best Country andWestern single, "Dang Me" . . . the Best Album, "Dang Me -Chug -A -Lug" . . . the Best Male Vocal Performance . . . theBest Song . . . the Best New Country Artist.

Jerry Kennedy who produces Roger's records for the Smashlabel also received comparable awards-as far as Roger is con-cerned, they can just hand Jerry the whole world any timethey get ready! There are also many who think that Rogermight have walked off with that sixth award had it not beenfor the Best Female Vocal Performance! That one went toRCA Victor's lovely Dottie West for her performance on "HereComes My Baby," and it couldn't have gone to a more deserv-ing gal!

The only other Nashville -connected award in the entireNARAS categories went to Tennessee Ernie Ford and the Jor-danaires for their great Capitol album, "Great Gospel Songs."This was the first time the event was held in Nashville, but

it turned out to be one of the highlights of the industry's season. We feel sure that the success and popularity this event demon-strated last Tuesday night here will assure bigger and betterthings in the years to come. All concerned with the NashvilleChapter of NARAS are to be highly congratulated on a jobwell done.

Nashville talent manager Herb Shucher announced last weekthe signing of veteran C&W performer Slim Whitman to an ex-clusive pact. For a number of years Shucher's relationship withWhitman has been that of friend and advisor; the associationdating back to the days when Shucher repped Imperial Recordsin Nashville and was responsible for recording Whitman. TheSmiling Starduster is currently making a lot of noise on theairways with a great new thing on the Imperial label called"Reminiscing."

The Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C., turned in another record -shattering full house with 11,600 payees Saturday April 13.Headlining the package was LeRoy Van Dyke, Porter Wagoner,Norma Jean, the Wilburn Brothers, Loretta Lynn, Jim & Jesseand Ray Pillow and many others. That marked the fourthstraight month that this Coliseum has had capacity houses.Another great country package will wind up the season onMay 8 headlined by Ray Price, Minnie Pearl, the Carter Family,Carl & Pearl Butler and Don Reno. All the packages werebooked by the old Music City Master, Hubert Long.

Capitol's Buck Owens and the Buckaroos are currently inEurope filling a string of personal appearance dates. Got acard from Buck in Paris the other day, and from the soundof it things are really swinging over there.

Word comes from out Wichita, Kansas way that Ron Chriscohas taken over the Music Directorship at country and westernoutlet KFDI. Ron says that the station's in the process of add-ing many innovations in programming that should establishKFDI as one of the nation's leading country music stations.

Now if you really want to add a shot of humor to an alreadygood record show, just drop the needle on any part of the newRCA Victor album, "Fresh From The Funny Farm" by DonBowman. This guy is too much. Our favorite track in the albumis "Coward At The Alamo!" No offense, San Antonio.

Hottest record this past week in Music City is Warner Mack's"The Bridge Washed Out" on Decca. Looks like it could bebigger than "Sittin' In An All Nite Cafe."

RCA Demonstrates New Tape System

NEW YORK-An evolution-ary stereo recorded tape cart-ridge system expected to vastlyexpand the new entertainmentmedium for automobiles, andis adaptable for a number ofother commercial uses, wasdemonstrated last week to mem-bers of the record industry byRCA Victor Records in cooper-ation with the Lear Jet Corpo-ration.

Unveiled at a "see it -hear it -do it" yourself presentationheld in the New York HiltonHotel were an innovationalstereo cartridge developed bythe Lear Jet organization, anew eight -track duplicatingtechnique created by RCA Vic-tor Records, and a compactradio -tape player created byLear to accept the cartridge. The instrument combines thefunctions of both radio andtape player in a package nolarger than some of the small-est auto radios now in use.

George R. Marek, VP and Gen-eral Manager of the RCA VictorRecord Division, hailed the pre-miered tape cartridge system.

Inviting the officials of otherrecord companies to considermaking use of both the newtape and cartridge so that theircatalogs could be made avail-able to a new "public -on -the -move," Marek added, "Withthis system, motorists can beliterally surrounded by sound, inundated with music alivewith that powerful emotionalappeal that is its great es-sence."

The eight -track stereo re-corded tape system, developedby RCA Victor in collabora-tion with Lear Jet, uses 1/4

inch tape at a speed of 334inches per second in the newcontinuous loop cartridge. Theback -lubricated tape designedspecifically for such an applica-tion is a development of theMagnetic Tape Department ofRCA Victor Records. Speci-fications for standardization ofeight -track stereo recordinghave been submitted to the En-gineering Committee of theRIAA (Record Industry Asso-ciation of America), for ap-proval by the RIAA Board ofDirectors.

Irwin J. Tarr, RCA Victor'sManager of Merchandising andPlanning, described the newsystem as one that makes pos-sible 80 minutes of stereo-phonic reproduction in a smallcompact cartridge.

The Lear Jet -developed in-strument includes a stereo tapecartridge player and AM radio. It is simple to operate and re-quires no more space in aninstrument panel than the con-ventional car radio.

According to Tarr, Victorplans to begin releasing itscatalog in this cartridge systemin the fall.
