NEW YORK - Capitol Rec-ords held a "press screening"on Jan. 3 in the AmericanaHotel of its much -talked -aboutKennedy Assassination docu-mentary LP, only hours afterthe death of featured inter-viewee Jack Ruby in a Dallashospital.

The record, titled "The Con-troversy," contains a three -min-ute 55 -second interview withthe killer of Lee Harvey Os-wald, President Kennedy's al-leged assassin, recorded secret-ly last December in ParklandMemorial Hospital, Dallas, where Ruby was undergoingtreatment for a massive cancerinfection. It is the only inter-view that Ruby was known tohave given to the press afterthe Oswald shooting, it waspointed out by the package'sproducer, Lawrence Schiller, who also answered questionsfrom the dais.

In the interview, Ruby, whowas questioned by members ofhis family, said that his shoot-ing of Oswald before a nation-

wide TV audience "happened insuch a blur" that he didn'tknow what he had done untiltwo police officers were holdinghim on the ground. Ruby saidthat he had never known Os-wald or seen him before andthat there was no truth to thestories that Ruby had plottedthe shooting in advance, or thatOswald had ever visited hisDallas strip -tease club.

`Ironic Part'Ruby added, "The ironic part

of this is that if I hadn't madean illegal turn behind the busto the parking lot [near the jailwhere Oswald was being held],had I gone the way I was sup-posed to go-straight downMain Street-I'd of never, Iwould never have met this fate.Because the difference in meet-ing this fate was 30 seconds. One way or the other."

The Ruby interview is copy-righted by Alskog, Inc., pro-ducers of the record for Capitol.

12.REVIEWSLADY GODIVA

PETER & GORDON-Capitol (S)T 2669.The English duo's recent smash

heads off the package, which contains,as previously, a tasteful collection ofnew ones and oldies. Album features"When I Fall In Love" and "Till ThereWas You," as a most attractive cover.

DOWN TO EARTH

STEVIE WONDER-Tamla 272.

When referring to this young sen-sation, the one thing that "down toearth" doesn't mean is "pedestrian."The album should take off with suchsides as "A Place in the Sun," "BangBang," "Hey Love."

GIRL WATCHERS

LES & LARRY ELGART-Columbia CL 2633.

The music is suggested for girlwatching, but many folks (especiallygirls) should get almost as much satis-faction out of just plain listening. In-cluded are "Girl Watchers," "NightWalk," "Out of Nowhere."

IN THE BRAZILIAN BAG

SERGIO MENDES TRIO-Tower T 5052.The Brazilian beat is so familiar

these days that it's hard to believe thatit hasn't always been with us. Theyoung trio (plus three guest artists)heard have a lilting way with the musicand earn high praise.

WATCHOUT!

MARTHA & THE VANDELLAS-Gordy 920.

The straight -ahead sound of thegroup is excitingly effective on suchtracks as "I'm Ready For Love," "KeepIt Up" and "I'll Follow You." Girls arekeeping up the good work.

DR. GOLDFOOT & THE GIRL BOMBS

Tower T 5053.

Close on the heels of the label's"Wild Angels" click comes another piescore, in a lighter vein but with appealto the same audience. Ten cuts handledby six different artists.

HOLLYWOOD, FLA. Com-mand Records' 1967 activitywill be the same only different, according to Loren Becker, la-bel head who introduced newproduct to distributors at lastweek's Diplomat Hotef meeting.

Diskery will be the same inthat Becker plans to maintainthe same smaller release sched-ule that has been company pol-icy since inception.

What also, hopefully, will bethe same, will be the source ofproduct for the label, which in1966 had its second biggestyear to date.

What will be different, saidBecker, who introduced andplayed the new product, will bea slightly changed approachto singles. He estimated that25 singles will be releasedto the market-many, in fact, most of them, cut on singledates for the single marketrather than pulled from al-bums. (If successful, of course, the cuts will eventually be in-cluded in packages.)

Becker also announced thatlabel personnel are currentlyworking on a new process ofsound reproduction-no furtherspecifics-that will be introedto the public in the spring.

Label also plans a new ap-proach to classical repertoire. The "warhorse" policy will bealtered to include light classi-cal pieces. Becker hopes to usethese packages to build a newgroup of buyers who may allbe scared off by the heavierclassical offerings. The first inthis series will be WilliamSteinberg conducting Stravin-sky's "Petrushka."

New AdditionsTwo new artists have been

added to the Command rosteras of the new year. They areRobert Maxwell and trumpeter-fluegelhornist Warren Kime, who will kick off a new conceptin the use of brass and voicesvia his "Brass Impact" LP.(Maxwell and Kime joined lastyear's new Command additionsMitchell Ayres, Count Basie,Toots Thielemans and BobbyByrne.)

Another new addition toCommand is Lanny Lee, justsigned on as New York basedpromotion and publicity direc-tor.

Becker announced that thenew product would receive mer-chandising and advertisingboosts in the form of newly de-signed walnut browsers for in-

stance and heavy consumer andtrade ads.

Becker introduced three sin-gles - most notably, the RayCharles Singers' "Birds of aFeather."

He also introduced eightalbums-five for immediate re-lease and three for March 1strelease. The first five include:"Petrushka"; Charles Mag-nante, "Carnival in FarawayPlaces"; Tony Mottola, "GuitarU.S.A."; "Doc Severinsen and`Friends' Swinging and Sing-ing"; and "Brass Impact."

The March releases include:Dick Hyman, "Sugarloaf Brasil/S.A."; Robert Maxwell, "Any-time!"; and Count Basie, "Hol-lywood Basie's Way."

Connie, Jackie '3 Sons' TeamHOLLYWOOD-A couple of

notable representatives of theirrespective generations get to-gether on CBS -TV's "My ThreeSons" Jan. 12: vet musical com-edy star Constance Moor anblonde -and -blue-eyed soul song-stress Jackie DeShannon.

They will play mother anddaughter.

Miss Moore is the beautifulstar who graced such films as"I Wanted Wings," "ShowBusiness," "Earl Carroll Vani-ties," "'Delightfully Danger-ous," "Mexicana," "AtlanticCity," "Hit Parade of 1947,""Take a Letter, Darling" (with"Three Sons" star Fred Mac -Murray), not to mention aBuck Rogers serial.

She also has been a big drawin clubs; but perhaps Miss

oore's most notable creditas the feminine lead inodgers and Hart's last Broad -ay show, "By Jupiter"! (which

is about to be revived off-Broadway and recorded byRCA Victor). Miss Moore ap-eared with Robert Young inhe TV series, "Window on

Mon Street," too.Miss DeShannon, who also

as done films ("Surf Party,"'Come On, Let's Live a Little")nd whose new Lib erty-mperial record is called "Crgme

on Down," joins with seriesregular Don Grady in theshow's plot to head off a feudbetween their two families.Grady, the Canterbury Recordsstar heard on the rising single"The Children of St. Monica,"sings his composition "Tomor-row and Tomorrow and Tomor-row" on the program.

(Grady, incidentally, unlikemost young TV series stars whohave made records, was a mu-sician prior to his TV success.Furthermore, he is contracted towrite all of the musical materialfor his show, his manager, MikeCasey, told Record World lastweek; adding that Miss Moore-returning to performing after ahiatus - was "treated like aqueen" on the set.)

Jackie became part of an-other team not long ago whenshe married Bud Dain, GeneralManager of Liberty Records.

RECORD WORLD-January 14, 1967 19

AmericanRadioHistory.Com

Page 20: record - americanradiohistory.com · Kennedy "Controversy" LP is the most important yet. Features interviews with witnesses to the tragedy and an exclusive ses-sion with the late

All the brothers and sisters are extremely proud that AtlanticRecords' Jerry Wexler was voted "Record Executive of theYear" in the annual Bill Gavin Poll. The top pop and R&Bdeejays and PDs and Music Directors and people in the recordindustry did the voting. This is the first time Jerry has wonthis award, and he is proud, not so much for himself, but forthe recognition of Atlantic Records, and of R&B music havingarrived as an integrated part of pop music.

More and more of the big pop hits are moving right into theplay -lists of the big pop stations, even in areas where very fewNegroes live. The most current example is "Stand By Me,"Spyder Turner, MGM, which is #3 R&B nationally, and is beingpicked by PDs like Paul Christy of WOKY, Milwaukee. How-ever, a glaring exception to this trend currently is, "I'm GonnaMiss You," Artistics, Brunswick. Although this record has hit

R&B in almost every R&B list and is now going #1 in Detroit,it has been played and broken pop only in N.Y.C., Philadelphiaand Hartford. Since it is a soft "Chicago Sound" R&B recordfrom genius -producer Carl Davis, and since much harder R&Brecords like Calla's J. J. Jackson went top 10 pop, it is verydifficult to ascertain what the hang-up is. We know that Messrs.Salkin and Schneider and Lenny Salidor of Decca have made ita top priority pop push, and that the road is going to beworked! The new Artistics LP has three potential hit singles. The strongest cut is "Girl I Need You" (side 2, cut 1) ; next,"Sweeter Than Sugar" and the ballad, "Glad I Met You," issure sayin' a taste!

Everyone's Ready for Freddy"Are You Lonely For Me," Freddy Scott, is #2 R&B nationally

behind the #1 Aaron Neville, and this record is now making thebig move pop. It is a great soul ballad that touches everyone.

Ernie Durham in Detroit reports that Howard Tate is nowa giant, and the biggest new giant in town is "Mercy Mercy,"Cannonball Adderly, which was busted first in Baltimore andPittsburgh, and then L.A., where it's a pop giant. Ernie reportssolid hit sales on Bobby Bland; Tommy Hunt; Robert Parker;and the Precisions: Ernie confirms the hit sales in Clevelandon "Tip Toe," Robert Parker; AND he confirms "Man orMouse," Jr. Parker, Duke, which Ken Hawkins charts at S4 atWJMO, Cleveland! . . . "Such Misery," Precisions, Drew, isnow very big in sales in Detroit and is starting in Baltimore.Steve Mancha is #7 in Detroit and the Metros on RCA is #9.Ernie is very high on: "Every Time," Linda Carr, Bell; "AGood Love," Lorraine Ellison; "Hold To My Baby," Cavaliers,RCA; "Much More of You," Magnificent Men, Capitol; JamesBrown; "Something Good," Carla Thomas; Jimmy Castor;Jimmy Soul; and he agrees with Al Jefferson, PD of WWIN,Baltimore on the "Just Be Sincere" side of Jackie Wilson overthe "I Don't Want To Lose You" side. Nat Tarnopol can expectsplit play!

"Feel So Bad," Little Milton, is a smash in Chicago, Balti-more and Philadelphia at WDAS.

The reaction to "Something Good," Carla Thomas, has beenfantastic, starting with Picks at WWIN, Baltimore; WCHB,Detroit; WABQ, Cleveland, and you name it . . . WWIN is allout on the new Solomon Burke, "Keep a Light In the Window."There is also a lot of reaction to the flip, "Time is a Thief."

To illustrate the kind of person Jerry Wexler is, and why thetop record execs in the business like Larry Uttal, Larry New-ton, Art Talmadge, Iry Biegel, Neil Bogart, Pete Garris, AlRosenthal, Leonard and Phil Chess, Bert Berns, Joe Kolsky,Phil Kahl, etc., consider him to be the record man's "RecordMan," we'll quote his comments on the instant success of HyWeiss' new Barry label. Jerry stated that he was "thrilled bythe giant sales" on "At the Party," Hector Rivera, and that"he has never heard a better soul record" than "Never LeaveMe," Thelma Jones. Jerry said that he is happy to see his R&Bcompetitor, Hy Weiss, get hits!

"Papa Was Too," Joe Tex, went on WMCA and is very bigR&B at WWRL in New York and the sales nationally are big. . . The sales on "The Tramp," Lowell Fulsom, Kent, are alsotremendous and it hit top three in San Francisco and #1 inMobile.

Different Hits Characterize Each MarketA number of records are top 5 to top 10 in from one to two or

three markets. The Fascinations are big in Cleveland and De-troit . . . Albert King is big in Baltimore, Chicago and St. Louis. . . "Shy Guy," Billy McGregor, Onederful, is big in Chicago. . . Peaches and Herb went big in N.Y., Chicago, Atlanta . . .

Cleveland and Detroit have their hits which have been dis-cussed.

And then we have the Latin-R&B trend, which gets biggerby the week. In N.Y.C., Jimmy Castor is #1, Hector Rivera is #2and Joe Cuba is #4. These records are getting larger every weekin other markets like S.F., Detroit, Cleveland, and Miami. ManyPDs are holding up adding more Latin records to their play -lists, because their stations sound too Spanish, and the soundsare getting too far away from true R&B. Yet this is what theR&B audience wants to hear, and many white listeners aretuneing in to hear these new sounds.

"Wack Wack," Young Holt, hit top 10 in N.Y.C. at lt2 at WOL,Washington; and the 4 Pennies is a tremendous hit in N.Y. . . .

"Never Leave Me," Thelma Jones, hit top 15 at WWRL . . .

"Karate," Emperors, is a giant in Baltimore, Philadelphia, andDetroit, which often go together the way Chicago and Clevelanddo. For example, records by the Capitols on Karen always gotop 10 in these cities and also break pop, because of the TVdancing.

Billy Gene, WTHB, Augusta, reports breakouts on: BillyMcGregor; Tommy & Cleve; Bo Diddley; Mighty Sam; JimmyCastor.

Philadelphia has hit sales on Bo Diddley; "Feel So Bad,"Radiants; and "Dry Your Eyes," Brenda & Tabulations, Dionn, which is Gilds Woods' favorite sound in town.

Bill Curtis, WCHB, Detroit, confirms Baltimore and othermarkets on strong sales on "That's How Strong My Love Is,"Mattie Moultrie, Columbia . . . Nickie Lee digs Roy Thompson;Sol Burke; Jimmy Hughes; Carla Thomas. "10 Commandmentsof Man," Nickie Lee, Atlantic, is a giant! ! Nickie wrote it.

At KSOL, S.F., "She's Looking Good," Rodger Collins, is n.The hottest record building through the South is "My SpecialPrayer," Joe Simon . . . "The Biggest Man," Tommy Hunt,Dynamo, is biggest in Baltimore, then Detroit and Cleveland. . . "96 Tears," Big Maybelle, is large in Cleveland. Also largein Baltimore are Ideals, Ovations, Hector Rivera, Tito Puente,Albert King, Tyrone the Wonder Boy, Clarence Carter. Andwe may credit Hot Rod with personally breaking "If You GoAway," Damita Jo. Howart Tate is big.

The big new news in Baltimore and Washington is the factthat "When I Stop Loving You," George Jackson, Double -R,broke for top 10 sales close to 15,000. It is in the WWIN charttop 10. It doesn't have national distribution . . . Columbia isvery excited about the sales in Baltimore and Washington on"That's How Strong My Love Is," Matti Moultrie, and it is get-ting big play and sales in all the mid -West markets.

Robert B. Q., KATZ, reports the "KATZ People's Choice" is"Oo Baby," Bo Diddley. He reports that Atlantic has picked upthe local St. Louis smash, "If It's All the Same," Luther Ingram.

"Girl Don't Make Me Wait," Bunny Sigler, Parkway, is asmash in Philadelphia, went on KSOL, S.F. and WWIN, Balti-more . . . "Skate Now," Lou Courtney, is big in S.F., Chicago,Cleveland and went #1 first in Houston . . . "Find Me," Attrac-tions, Amy, is a hit in S.F. and broke in Atlanta with WIGO . . .

"Standing on Guard," Falcons, is top 10 in S.F., Philadelphiaand was #1 in Detroit. "Oo Baby," Bo Diddley, is #5 at KSOL,S. F. and broke in Philadelphia . . . "Hiding My Love," AesopsFables, Atco, is a hit at KSOL.

JazzTaking Care of Business

By DEL SHIELDS

There is a sinister plotafoot in Hollywood. With thenew that Oliver Nelson, altoand tenor saxophonist, compos-er and arranger has joined thegrowing group of jazz com-posers now residing in the filmcapital to write for the movies, the creative writers of jazz areslowly being swallowed up.

Now we are not against prog-ress. And certainly we are notagainst jazz musicians comingto the attention of Hollywoodand having an opportunity toadd to their credits by way ofmovie scores.

Del Shieldsnew dimensionwood scene.

QuincyJones, LaloSchifrin, John-ny Mandel,Pete Ruguloand BennyCarter arewell estab-lished as thatnew coterie ofjazzmen whoare adding ato the Holly -

There is a question, however,as to why? Is it possible thatHollywood, known more for itscommercial pap and lack ofrealism, has finally maturedand recognized something thatmost American institutionshave not learned? That jazz isan American art and its acad-emy is filled with some of themost talented performers inmusic? And that this talent canbe transferred to the screenand help to mold a movie? Andthat since movies are still agreat family tradition and hastremendous influence on Ameri-cans, it should contain all ofthe American influences and in-stitutions?

Perhaps this is true. I wouldhate to think that Hollywood'sreasons for tapping the jazzcomposers is due to a dearthof new and stimulating bloodin the writing groups. Althoughthis would not be wrong. Iwould only like them to ac-knowledge the truth in the sit-uation.

As jazz struggles for recog-nition and survival in possiblyevery quarter, Hollywood isturning out movies with mil-lion dollar budgets with thecredits, "Music by (a formerjazzman) ."

Admittedly most of the jazz-men now writing will not admit

that there is any attempt ontheir parts to subtly influencethe movie audience with jazz. They will say that when an as-signment is given, they willmake every effort to add musicthat will enhance the picture.Ift here is a great deal of jazzemployed in the scores, well,it's just one of those things.

But it is good to know thatjazz can serve healthful, andentertaining purposes. After all,is this not what jazz is allabout? And in this day of theunder -25 generation, where ev-erything is happening now, weare experiencing rock and rollgroups gladly shouting to theroof tops that they listen tomany of the jazz masters andmuch of their influence hascome from jazz.

With this youthful admission, the old head shake their gray-ing heads and say pity theyouth. Yet, they, too, are mak-ing the admission that Holly-wood has not owned up to.Jazz is creative and stimulat-ing. Its deep personal messagecan convey a truth like no othermusic. And it carries with ita message.

That this music has helpedto make more motion picturesinteresting and entertaininghas been a great help to theentire jazz world. Yet, no onesays anything about it.

Some years ago, we advo-cated that jazz was badly inneed of a vast public relationscampaign to sell America onits own homeground product.

Little did we realize at thetime that jazz was already abig part of the total scene. After all, what better programcould one ask for than to bemarried to Hollywood?

With the addition of tele-vision and its commercials, jazz is being played, exposed, integrated more than ever be-fore.

Even if the movie mogulswill not admit the fact, the factis that when jazz is being usedin movie scores and televisionscores, we have arrived.

However, we do hope thatin their newfound wealth thejazzmen will return on oc-casions and keep us remindedthat their craft is still best intheir familiar setting of doingwhat comes naturally.

Barry Sadler and the Mon-kees were the artists who hadsingle records and albums cer-tified simultaneously. Sadler's"Ballad" and "Ballads of theGreen Berets" constituted theindustry's first big hit of theyear.

Certified Simultaneously"Last Train to Clarksville"

was the single and "The Mon-kees" was the album whichwere certified simultaneouslylate in 1966. These recordings,on the new Colgems label, werefollowed by a second Monkeessingle, "I'm a Believer," whichwas certified the week it wasreleased, and which had soldover two million copies beforethe end of the year. The firstMonkees album had sold morethan 3,000,000 copies by the be-ginning of 1967.

Champion among all RCAVictor artists once again was

Elvis Presley who had threemore albums certified duringthe year.

Perry Como, who has had nu-merous gold records on theRCA Victor label, became thefirst artist ever to have an al-bum certified on an economylabel when his "Perry Comosings Merry Christmas Music"was certified on the Camdenlabel.

Other RCA artists who hadproduct certified during theyear included Al Hirt's "TheBest of Al Hirt," Eddy Arnold's"My World," the late JimReeves' "The Best of JimReeves," the original cast al-bum of "Oliver" and an albumfrom the past which proved thelasting popularity of stars fromanother era, "Jeannette Mac-Donald and Nelson Eddy Fa-vorites."

Everyman SeriesTo $2.50 Per LP

NEW YORK-Vanguard an-nounces an increase in the sug-gested list price of its Every-man line: $2.50 per disk, effec-tive immediately.

The decision to raise theprice, declares Vanguard Na-tional Sales Director HerbCorsack, "was a desire to keepthe label at its zenith. We'vealways been proud of the factthat respected critics have oftenreferred to Everyman recordsas 'The best buy at any price,'and we want to keep it thatway. We've completely re-vamped the look of the pack-age, and we will continue toproduce a prestige product asalways."

"MAMA'S LITTLEJEWEL"Decca 32061

By PAUL PERRY

"Well, what's your impression?" asked Starday promotionman Charlie Dick right after a gang of us had listened to the newRed Sovine single, "I Didn't Jump the Fence." Comments rangedfrom "That's certainly different for Red" to "It's the most com-mercial sound to come out of Nashville in months." And I'm in-clined to agree wholeheartedly. Starday A&R head Tommy Hillwho wrote "Giddy Up Go" calls it the best thing Red has everdone. Gene Chrysler wrote this one, and it appears from this sideof the fence that Red Sovine has a potential turn -table monster.Let's hope so, anyway.

Momentum was gained last week on rumors that Nancy Sinatrais about to try the Nashville Sound for Reprise. Word has it thatMiss Sinatra will jet in late this month. Meanwhile, Nashville -based pop songstress Sandy Posey performed her "Single Girl"

MGM eyeopener on ABC's "Where the ActionIs" last week.

The King of Country Music Roy Acuff is nowhome convalescing from gall bladder surgeryperformed two weeks back at the local Miller'sClinic. This is the same location where AudreyWilliams recently spent the New Year's holi-days slightly under the weather.

That cute RCA Victor redhead Dottie Westwith her Heartaches, which includes husbandBill, is playing the local Black Poodle through

Jan. 14. The plush nitery is now in its second year of all countrytalent and atmosphere.

The new member of Ernest Tubb's Texas Troubadors is leadguitarist Steve Chapel who takes over from Leon Rhodes whodecided to quit the road for a while.

A new record label, Jack O'Diamonds, is about to debut fromthe local offices of Alex Zanetis, Suite 1200, 1808 West End Build-ing. And by the way, Alex has a new face in his office these daysin the person of new girl Friday Gi Gi Emmons.

Hickory has decided that they have a hit on Bob Luman's"Hardly Anymore." This one was penned by Doug Kershaw of theRusty and Doug team, now broken up. Telephoned with Bobjust before his journey westward last week and he's all excitedover national reaction so far. Bob joins fellow Hickory artistDorsey Burnette along with a band from the Coast on a 14 dateN.C.O. Club swing this week which opens in Barstow, Calif., andcloses the first of next month at Fort Polk, La. A charter planewill convey the troupe because the closest engagement is 400miles.Dorsey and Gary Crosby have both signed pacts with Hick-ory Records as well as Acuff -Rose Music. Their recording & writ-ing activities will be supervised by Wesley Rose.

Jones: Improving on PerfectionPappy Dailey was in town last week and that usually means the

Pap's prize pupil George Jones is recording. And that's what wasgoing on for a number of hours at the local Columbia Sound build-ing. George told us that the single release is not the same cut as"Walk Through This World With Me" in the long play. How canGeorge Jones improve George Jones?

Laura Bates, of the duet Betsy & Laura singing team, takes overthe secretarial chores this week at the local offices of Blue CrestMusic. The firm is operated by Ray Baker and is also local repre-sentative of Buck Owens' Blue Book Publishing Company.

Kapp's Chellman After ChartsA giant addition to Kapp's Nashville operations is Chuck Chell-

man, formerly with Starday and Monument. This ace promo -maninfo's that all charts, weekly or what have you, will be greatlyappreciated. Send to Chuck Chellman, Kapp Records, 806 16thAvenue South, zip code 37203. Also look for a new Mel Tillissingle, "Life Turned Her That Way."

What a unique story that was about the new Jean Chapel Chal-lenge release, "I'm Your Woman." Jean, who is a kid sister ofMartha Carson, said she had given up hope of ever recordingagain and was concentrating on writing alone. Then Jean cut anordinary dub session for Bob Jennings, local rep for Four Star, and the rendition of "I'm Your Woman" came off so great thatChallenge decided to release it. What a record!
